Twitter’s direct messages now support iMessage-like emoji reactions

You can now take advantage of emoji reactions when using Twitter’s direct messaging feature.

This lets you react to a message without needing to type anything, similar to Tapback reactions on Apple’s iMessage. The company first started testing this cool new capability last year, and now it’s available to all customers globally through the web, iOS and Android, the micro-blogging service announced this morning via its Twitter Support account.

The available emoji reactions include:

  • Thumbs up
  • Thumbs down
  • Laughing face
  • Sad face
  • Crying face
  • Heart
  • Fire

According to the tweet, you can add a reaction by clicking the heart and plus icon which appears when you hover over the message on the web or double tap it in the mobile app.

Doing so pulls up a menu allowing you to react to the message with an appropriate emoji.

Should you happen to be using an older version of the mobile Twitter app which doesn’t support message reactions, you’ll see reactions displayed as text-based messages similar to fullscreen and bubble effects in Messages on iPhone.

Emoji reactions can be added to both text and media attachments. All conversation participants will receive a notification any time a new reaction is added to a message.

According to Twitter’s FAQ, you can easily undo a reaction and it will be removed from the message for all participants. If you’d like to see the list of users who reacted to the message, simply click or tap on a reaction in a conversation.
