It has been rumored for months now that Apple is working on a new, low-cost iPhone. And now that 2020 is here, the rumor mill is trying to nail down a launch window.
According to Bloomberg, Apple’s planning to start mass production of its low-cost iPhone starting in February. And if that is indeed the case, then it’s possible that the new handset, which is said to look similar to the iPhone 8, could launch sometime in March. Of course, plans could change and nothing is official just yet, but it certainly lines up with many of the previous rumors surrounding this handset.
The new low-cost iPhone has been called the “iPhone SE 2” in the past, which is due mostly to the fact that it’s meant to be the successor to the original in cost alone. As far as design goes, as was mentioned above, this new handset is said to look mostly like the iPhone 8, boasting a 4.7-inch LCD display, a physical Touch ID Home button, and bezels above and below the display.
However! The handset will also feature an A13 Bionic processor under the hood, and up to 3GB of RAM. It is rumored to feature a single camera on the back. The oft-rumored smartphone has been rumored to be called the “iPhone 9“, too. But that’s certainly not guaranteed by any means.
If things line up and this is meant to be a follow-up to the iPhone SE, then we could see this new handset — whatever it’s called — priced at $399. The iPhone 8 is still on sale today for $449, so this handset would definitely be the most affordable iPhone in the lineup if the stars align.
