Apple could also be developing a 5.4-inch iPhone 8 follow-up with Face ID

According to a convoluted rumor published by the mostly reliable Japanese blog Mac Otakara, Apple could be working on an iPhone SE 2 variant with Face ID and a 5.4-inch display.

The report Tuesday from Mac Otakara is somewhat confusing so take it with a grain of salt.

Citing suppliers who exhibited at the CES 2020, it claims the Cupertino tech giant “might be developing Face ID models beside Touch ID models as an updated version of ‌iPhone 8‌.”

MacRumors has translated the story describing the device’s features:

The body size returns to ‌iPhone‌ 7 and the receiver size is in between the iPhone 11 series and the iPhone XS series. The rear camera is much bigger compared to ‌iPhone 8‌ and the LED True Tone flash size returns to ‌iPhone‌ 7. By employing TrueDepth camera, the vertical width of the active area size for the display expands and thus becomes 5.4-inch size, and the possibility of it being the model buzzed about increases.

If true, Apple may release two iPhone SE 2 models, one we previously wrote about that would have an iPhone 8-like design with improved cameras, processors, RAM and Touch ID and the other one we just learned about that would also swap Touch ID for Face ID.

To refresh your memory, the iPhone 8 has a 4.7-inch display and Touch ID.

If you’re wondering why might Apple release two iPhone SE 2 models with biometric authentication serving as the only point of differentiation, you’re not alone. That’s why I think the device the Mac Otakara report describes could actually be Apple’s officially follow-up to the iPhone 8 with a 5.4-inch LCD screen and Face ID.

Thoughts?

Apple is expected to release at least three new iPhones later this year featuring 5.4, 6.1 and 6.7-inch sizes, with the 6.1-incher likely being the next iPhone 11 and the other two phones successors to the current iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max handsets.

All new iPhones are expected to feature support for the entire 5G radio spectrum, including Sub-6GHz and the faster mmWave radio technology, both at the same time.

What do you think, will Apple launch two iPhone SE 2 models in 2020 in different sizes?
