Quibi streaming service launches April 6, starts at $4.99 with ads

There are already plenty of streaming services out there, but we’ve got more on the way. Take Quibi for example, which has just announced launch and pricing information.

Quibi is a new option coming down the pipe. The company has just announced (via CordCuttersNews) that the service will launch on Monday, April 6. When it arrives it will cost $4.99 per month if you choose the option with advertisements. If you want to skip those, though, Quibi is offering an option without ads for $7.99 per month.

Quibi was founded by the former chief of Disney and DreamWorks Jeffrey Katzenberg, and the Chief Executive Officer is Meg Whitman. The service will have an initial partnership with T-Mobile, and it will have a variety of content available on it at launch. The primary goal of Quibi? Short-form content.

According to Whitman, Quibi will have 175 original shows and 8,500 short episodes within the first 12 months following its launch. There will be comedy sketches, reality shows, sci-fi stories, and reboots of former MTV shows. Quibi will also host news content from the likes of NBC News, BBC News, TMZ, Vox, Telemundo, and ESPN.

Some of the shows include the likes of Elba vs. Block, which will see film and television star Idris Elba (Luther) tackling stunt driving. Thanks A Million stars Jennifer Lopez (Hustlers) in a pay-it-forward effort. Steven Spielberg (JAWS, Schindler’s List) is developing a horror anthology series for Quibi as well.

And there is much more, all of it designed to be easily digestible in short-form content, with episodes apparently up to 15 minutes in length.

Of course, that will primarily be focused on mobile devices. Quibi will work in both portrait mode and landscape mode, which is an important element for any streaming service.

So, Quibi. Think you’ll be checking it out when it launches in April? Or will you be focusing on NBCUniversal’s Peacock or AT&T’s HBO Max?
