DigiTimes: Apple could release two iPhone SE 2 models in 2020 in different sizes

According to a sketchy report based on sources in Taiwan’s supply chain, the official successor to the compact iPhone SE handset may arrive in form of two devices in different sizes.

DigiTimes wrote Monday that the technology firm may launch as many as six iPhones in 2020 — four OLED models and two LCD ones — claim sources at Taiwan’s handset supply chain.

Keep in mind that DigiTimes has a hit-and-miss track record in reporting Apple rumors.

But if you ask trusted Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, mass production of the next iPhone SE device should kick off in February 2020, in time for a potential Spring 2020 release. He’s expecting a device resembling the iPhone 8 form factor with a Touch ID-enabled Home button, a single-lens rear camera and the latest A13 Bionic chip with three gigabytes of RAM.

There should be a red color option, too.

To be sure, Kuo has called for a single iPhone SE 2 with a 4.7-inch edge-to-edge display. With that in mind, today’s report from DigiTimes does specify the screen size of an extra LCD-based model, saying it will have a 5.5-inch screen or an even bigger 6.1-inch LCD display.

But unlike Kuo who called for a spring introduction of the device, sources at DigiTimes claim the supposed iPhone SE 2 models will be available at the end of 2020 or in earlier 2021. As for Apple’s OLED lineup for 2020, Kuo says we should expect one iPhone model with a 5.4-inch screen, two 6.1-inch phones and a flagship 6.7-inch model.

AppleInsider has more on that:

Members of the Apple supply chain producing components for iPhones have apparently been shown roadmaps for ‘six items’ of iPhones, the publication claims. Within the supply chain, Chipbond Technology of Taiwan is said to have received packaging orders for the LCD screens of both SE models.

Apple may not even sell the next iPhone SE as “iPhone SE 2” — the pretty reliable Japanese blog Mac Otakara has it that the next iPhone SE may instead be marketed as “iPhone 9”.
