Luna Display adds Mac-to-Mac mode to turn any Mac into a secondary display

Luna Display has become a popular accessory for making an iPad a secondary display to a Mac, and now it’s expanding to any Mac for good measure.

You will need the Luna Display dongle to make the magic work, and the company is billing this as a quick and easy way to repurpose your old Mac devices lying around to do something useful. With the dongle your primary Mac will be able to communicate with the other directly, turning it into a secondary display thanks to the new Mac-to-Mac mode.

This means you can have a variety of combinations, including an iMac and a MacBook Pro, a Mac mini and a MacBook, or even one MacBook as a secondary display to another MacBook. Or you could even use your MacBook as a primary display to your Mac mini.

Here are the compatibility requirements to make this possible:

  • The Primary Mac requires macOS 10.11 El Capitan or later
  • The Secondary Mac requires macOS 10.8 Mountain Lion or later
  • You will need the latest version of Luna Display on all devices. Free download available here: lunadisplay.com/hello
  • Internet connection is necessary as USB is only supported for Mac-to-iPad Mode at this time

With the Mac-to-Mac feature you’ll have mouse support on both devices, as well as keyboard and trackpad support for both, too.

Expanding to Macs as a way to use a secondary display is a solid move, and one that Luna even acknowledges was “right under our noses” regarding a next step for the Luna Display dongle. It does indeed breathe new life into aging Macs, and allows for folks to use those aging devices in a way that might actually be helpful again.

It’s also worth noting that Luna is offering 25% off the Luna Display for a very limited time. The deal ends at 11:59 PM PST on Friday, October 18, 2019. So if you want to get your hands on the Luna Display accessory, which is available in USB-C or Mini DisplayPort variants, now seems like a good time to do it.

Companies that made a name for themselves with ways to turn an iPad into a secondary display are looking for ways to differentiate ever since Apple unveiled the Sidecar feature for iPadOS and macOS Catalina. With this, Apple baked in the ability to turn an iPad into a secondary display, which makes it potentially rough for third-party options.

Do you think you’ll try out the Mac-to-Mac mode?
