‘Shantaram’ adds Charlie Hunnam to lead the series for Apple TV+

Way back in 2018, Apple acquired the rights to develop Shantaram, based on a novel written by Gregory David Roberts. And now we know Charlie Hunnam (Sons of AnarchyThe Lost City of Z) is going to lead the upcoming series for Apple TV+.

Variety has the report this week. At the time of publication, there is no official launch date. Considering we’re just now hearing about the arrival of Hunnam to lead the series, it may be a bit of time before Shantaram sees the light of day on Apple’s streaming service.

Charlie Hunnam has been cast as the lead in the forthcoming Apple series “Shantaram,” based on Gregory David Robert’s novel, Variety has confirmed. Apple has greenlit the show, which will represent the first international production for Apple TV Plus, after acquiring the rights to the novel back in June 2018.

The upcoming series is based off Roberts’ life, at least in some part. Hunnam will be playing the lead character named Lin. The main character is on the run from an Australian prison, and aims to get lost within the huge, busy city of Bombay. As time goes on, Lin scrapes a life together in the slums of the city, navigating the underworld along the way.

Shantaram has seen massive success, being published in 42 different territories and in 39 languages. It has sold six million copies.

Eric Warren Singer will serve as writer and executive producer on “Shantaram.” The series is produced by Anonymous Content and Paramount Television. David Manson and Andrea Barron will also executive produce along with Steve Golin for Anonymous Content, Nicole Clemens and Dave Erickson. Justin Kurzel will direct the first two parts of the 10-episode series, as well as exec producing.

Are you looking forward to this particular series? It sounds like it could be a nice addition to the streaming service.
