‘Next-generation AirPods’ may enter production in October

Despite the fact that today is Tuesday, September 10, and Apple is going to announce a host of new devices, there’s at least one new report today detailing what’s still coming down the line.

DigiTimes is reporting that Apple is planning on moving ahead with its “next-generation AirPods“, and that production for the new version of the truly wireless headphones could enter production as early as this October. If that is indeed the case, then the new AirPods could end up on store shelves just in time for this year’s holiday shopping season.

This report is just a brief snippet, as noted by MacRumors, and the full report won’t be up for a few more days. But here’s what it says:

Assembling for new-gen AirPods to kick off as early as October

Apple’s suppliers are gearing up for assembling for the next-generation AirPods as early as October, according to industry sources.

As far as what new features these new AirPods might bring to the table, that’s a bit up-in-the-air at the moment. There have been rumors that Apple will launch water resistant AirPods before the end of this year, for example. However, it’s also been suggested that water resistance and noise cancelling AirPods may see the light of day sometime in 2020.

It’s possible that both things happen, of course. These next-generation AirPods could feature only water resistance, and that may make them cost a bit more money, too. And then in 2020, the newer AirPods could boast both the water resistance and noise cancellation.

If these new AirPods are going into production in October, we won’t have long to wait to see what Apple is working on.
