With just a few weeks left until Apple’s rumored September 10 unveiling, ChargerLAB has now claimed in a tweet posted this morning that the next iPhone will finally ditch the 5W power brick and instead ship with a USB-C fast charger and a Lightning to USB-C cable in the box.
That means you’ll at long last be able to charge your new iPhone from dead to fifty percent in just under thirty minutes without having to pay extra for the cable and the fast charger. As 9to5Mac observes, while ChargeLab last year leaked renders of the iPad Pro’s 18W charger, it incorrectly predicted the charger would also be bundled with 2018’s iPhone lineup.

Earlier reports have agreed that the next iPhone would retain the Lightning port, including the fairly reliable Japanese blog Mac Otakara, but ship with an 18-watt charger in the box instead of the current five-watt charger. The new 18-watt charger for the upcoming iPhone lineup would almost certainly support the USB Power Delivery protocol for fast-charge capability.
On the other hand, you have Taiwanese trade publication DigiTimes, Apple analysts like Ming-Chi Kuo and publications like Bloomberg predicting that 2019’s iPhones will in fact transition to the USB-C connector after all. Only time will tell who’s right and who’s wrong about that.

As you know, Apple last year made a switch from Lightning I/O to USB-C on the iPad Pro family. The way things currently stand, it doesn’t seem like the Cupertino tech giant will be adopting industry-standard USB-C connectivity on the popular smartphone, at least not this year.
