Here’s Apple’s list of apps that are currently incompatible with macOS Catalina

Hundreds of apps are currently incompatible with macOS Catalina, including Panic’s popular FTP client Transmit, AgileBits’ password manager 1Password, the system dashboard iStats Menu, as well as old versions of QuickBooks and Adobe’s Creative Cloud, to name but a few.

According to Cult of Mac, having installed a beta version of macOS Catalina 10.15, third-party software developer Steve Moser was poking around until he stumbled upon a list of 235 incompatible apps in /Library/Apple/Library/Bundles that he published on his website.

“Many of the apps listed are included only because older versions of the apps are incompatible as noted by the strings included with the bundle,” he noted.

This list appears during the macOS Catalina installation process.

The Catalina installer uses the list to identify installed but incompatible apps.

A quick scan of the compatibility list reveals that many Mac antivirus apps currently don’t work with Catalina, but others are affected too. Check out some of the more notable inclusions:

  • Transmit 4.1.7
  • 1Password 2.12.2
  • iStats Menu 2.9
  • Box Sync 4.0
  • QuickBooks 2015
  • SugarSync 1.0
  • Default Folder X 4.3.10
  • VMWare Fusion 3.1.4
  • Creative Cloud 1.1.0.592
  • Parallels 2.5

Many of these quite popular apps have been around for years.

Just because they’re currently incompatible with macOS Catalina doesn’t mean these apps won’t be updated ahead of its launch this fall to ensure uninterrupted operation for people who will immediately install the macOS Catalina update.

Curiously, Steve was able to discover the string in the bundle “IncompatibleAppsList” that informs the user that BareBones Software’s TextWrangler app “has been end of lifed,” advising them to update to their BBEdit app, which recently became available through Mac App Store as Apple relaxed its sandboxing rules in macOS Mojave.
