Hulu brings support for 4K streaming to Apple TV 4K and Chromecast Ultra

Hulu today announced that owners of the Apple TV 4K media streamer and those who prefer Google’s Chromecast Ultra HDMI dongle can now stream their entertainment in 4K resolution.

After the company removed all 4K content from the service in summer 2018, its customers can now again enjoy their favorite TV shows and movies in 4K resolution, including Hulu Originals like “The Handmaid’s Tale”, “Castle Rock” and “Catch-22”.

The Streamable has the story:

Hulu’s 4K UHD support streams at 16 Mbps, so you will need a strong internet connection to watch your favorite shows. Their 4K streaming only supports SDR (Standard Dynamic Range), not HDR10 or Dolby Vision, so it may not have the same contrast and richness of color as other 4K content.

It’s unclear if Hulu will bring back 4K streaming to gaming consoles like PS4 and Xbox One. To learn more about supported Hulu resolutions, see their support document.

In May of this year, Disney increased its ownership stake in Hulu through a deal with Comcast so the Mickey Mouse house now has full control of the video service. Other streaming services offer 4K content as well, but only some shows are available at the maximum video resolution.

For instance, Netflix’s pricier Ultra plan ($16 per month) has about 600 titles in 4K, including their original series and some licensed content such as “Planet Earth”. Amazon’s Prime Video offers all it original content in 4K, and some in HDR. Amazon also has about 50 films in 4K, including “Arrival”, “Philadelphia” and “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”.

Engadget notes in its own report a new guide for Hulu’s live TV streaming service is now available with information what to watch on the streaming service right now and what’s coming up in the next two weeks, including which episodes are new and how long they last. You can access the live TV guide while watching Hulu by hovering over the icon of three lines in the bottom-left corner of the player bar.

On a related note, The Streamable mentioned that fuboTV is currently the only live TV streaming service to offer live events like the World Cup, Major League Baseball, College Football and College Basketball live in 4K.
