Looks like Apple is really sticking with Lightning for this year's iPhones

Alleged CAD images of the upcoming iPhones just leaked on the web.

I immediately noticed that Lightning is not going away, at least not this year.

No out-of-the-box fast charging for you this year, ladies and gentlemen, unless you purchase a Lightning to USB cable. This basically corroborates a recent report from Mac Otakara that backed up analyst Ming-Chi Kuo’s prediction saying that the models will ship with a fast-charging 18-watt adapter in the box but won’t ditch Lightning for USB-C.

Published on leak aggregator SlashLeaks this morning by a user with a high trust score, the CAD images show several other details that line up with prior rumors about the new iPhone models that the company should release in September of this year. The iPhone XS successor is depicted on the top image. The images below apparently show successors of the current iPhone XS Max and iPhone XR models, respectively.

We saw similar renders ahead of prior iPhone releases, you could even say they’re an integral part of the iPhone rumor-mill. In the past, these CAD images were lifted from the servers of Foxconn, a Taiwanese contract manufacturer that assembles iPhones.

iDB cannot vouch for the authenticity of any of these leaked images.

This is apparently the next iPhone XS Max. You can see a Lightning port at the bottom.

Apple is expected to update the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max and iPhone XR lineup with new 5.8 and 6.5-inch OLED iPhones along with a 6.1-inch LCD iPhone, respectively. Of the three, only the OLED phones should have a triple-lens system out the back while the iPhone XR successor should adopt a dual-lens rear camera for more precise portraiture photography and AR.

The XS/Max renders show the controversial square bump on the rear housing three camera lenses, LED flash and a microphone. But despite having “only” two rear cameras, the iPhone XR successor is also depicted as having a rectangular camera bump.

The larger camera bump design has certainly been the subject of online controversy.

The next iPhone XR will house two rear cameras in a rectangular bump maintain visual consistency with the whole lineup.

An additional rear camera should enable a wider shooting angle and a broader range of optical zoom up to a rumored 3x zoom versus 2x optical zoom on the current models.

Whole cottage industries depend on these CAD models, from the Apple blogosphere to the iPhone case industry. With these new CADs now out in the wild for everyone to see, you can expect case makers to begin 3D printing cases in order to test their designs.
