Apple releases iOS 12.3.1 with bug fixes for VoLTE and Messages

Earlier in May, Apple officially released iOS 12.3 to the public. That software included new things like the brand new, revamped Apple TV app. And now the company is moving forward with a minor update to that software, aiming to fix a few minor issues that have cropped up.

As the numbers suggest, iOS 12.3.1 (Build 16F203) is a minor update. It’s not likely that Apple will be including any major forward-facing features for the end user. Instead, these are primarily bug fixes and other software improvements to help better the overall experience. And squash bugs, of course.

This time around, Apple is looking to fix issues discovered related to voice over LTE (VoLTE) and iMessage. Apple learned of an issue with VoLTE that could prevent some iPhones from receiving or making calls. iOS 12.3.1 is meant to fix that.

Next, bugs discovered with Message. Apple is fixing an issue that could prevent the “Report Junk” link from showing up in a message delivered by an unknown sender. Another bug connected with Messages can cause some unknown senders from showing up in the standard conversation list, even if the user has “Filter Unknown Senders” enabled.

These are certainly minor bugs in the grand scheme of things. However, they can also be very annoying in general use. It’s good that Apple is fixing them pretty quickly after the initial release of iOS 12.3 earlier this month.

iOS 12.3.1 is free to download. It’s available now as an over-the-air (OTA) update. If you have “Automatic Updates” switched on, then your supported iOS device will automatically download and install the update the next time it’s plugged in to charge. If you don’t have the feature switched on, simply open the Settings app –> General –> Software Update and follow the on-screen instructions to update.

If there are any other discoveries made in iOS 12.3.1 following its public launch, we will update this post accordingly. This is also not the last iOS 12-based update coming from Apple. The company is already beta testing iOS 12.4 now, and that’s expected to launch sometime soon.
