Your cellular carrier’s name appears in between the cellular signal strength indicator and Wi-Fi signal strength indicator in your iPhone’s Status Bar from the moment you activate your handset, but doesn’t it seem a bit weird to you that your Status Bar still displays the carrier’s name when you connect to a Wi-Fi network?
If you’re in agreeance, then you might enjoy a free jailbreak tweak called WiFiCarrier by iOS developer NoisyFlake, as it replaces the carrier’s name in your iPhone’s Status Bar with the SSID (network name) of your current Wi-Fi network whenever you’re connected to one.
In the screenshot example above, the handset is connected to a Wi-Fi network named “Black Mesa.” Consequently, the words “Black Mesa” appear in the Status Bar instead of AT&T, Verizon, or [insert other unnamed carrier here].
As you might’ve noticed, WiFiCarrier adds a preference pane to the Settings app. There, you can enable or disable the tweak on demand and enter custom carrier text if you want it.
The latter option to customize the carrier text only takes effect when you aren’t connected to Wi-Fi. Personally, I prefer to keep this blank as I like to see my carrier’s name when I’m connected to a cellular network, but I still appreciate seeing my Wi-Fi network’s name when I’m connected to it instead.
The developer includes a blue “Save” button at the top right of the preference pane, and you’ll want to use this every time you adjust the tweak’s settings to ensure that they’re appended to your device.
If you’re interested in trying WiFiCarrier, then you can download it for free from NoisyFlake’s beta repository in Cydia. The tweak is compatible with all jailbroken iOS 12 devices, but the developer does note that it won’t work properly if you have Zeppelin or a similar tweak installed.
