Apple is no longer charging a $99 fee for data migrations with new Mac purchases and repairs

Apple used to charge customers $99 to have an in-store specialist assist them in moving data from their old Mac to their new computer, but that’s no longer the case.

According to a report Tuesday by TidBITS, an Apple Store Operations Specialist has confirmed the policy change, telling the publication that there is no more cost associated with data migrations when purchasing a new Mac computer or having your existing Mac repaired.

In other words, if you’re buying a new Mac computer at an Apple Store or having a repair done that requires moving data, Apple will now do it on your behalf free of charge.

TidBITS adds:

That said, it will still be a slow process, so take that into account when planning your pickup. Also, since the policy just changed, it’s worth confirming with the people you’re working with if you’re getting Apple to do a data migration soon.

Data migrations are available for Mac and Windows at Apple’s brick-and-mortar stores. This service was part of the company’s $99 One-to-One training program—hence the fee. After the tech giant discontinued One-to-One in 2015, data migrations were available standalone.

Thankfully, they’ve now removed the fee altogether.

Of course, power users could save $100 by transferring data themselves. In fact, Apple’s own support document proves an overview of the whole process.
