While perusing the Changes tab in Cydia this week, I happened upon a particularly interesting new jailbreak tweak called Textyle by iOS developer Deniz Basegmez. Upon closer inspection, it looks like something that large sum of jailbreakers might want to try for themselves.
As shown in the screenshot example above, Textyle integrates with iOS’ native Action Menu interface, which materializes after selecting any string of text. When it appears, you can modify the selected text’s aesthetics with different types of Unicode-based fonts and styles.
This text formatting method works throughout iOS, whether it’s a text message, a post on social media, or simply jotting a note down in the Notes app. Moreover, as the developer explains, the text formatting is visible on other devices and other platforms (Android, Mac, Windows, etc.) because it uses the Unicode standard to achieve its result.
Right out of the box, Textyles comes with 33 different styles to pick from. Advanced users can take things a step farther by adding third-party styles to the /var/mobile/Library/Preferences/com.d11z.textyle.maps.plist file via Fileza or another filesystem-editing application.
Once you’ve installed Textyle, you will find a dedicated preference pane in the Settings app where you can configure the teak to your liking:
Here, you can:
- Toggle Textyle on or off on demand
- Configure the styles that you want to appear in the Textyle menu
- Blacklist specific apps from taking advantage of Textyle
