Monday’s media event live stream is already active but Apple is trolling everyone, really

Apple’s pivot to services will come into full view at tomorrow’s star-studded media event at Steve Jobs Theater. Seemingly trolling everyone ahead of the big reveal, Apple activated the video stream about two hours ago, but it’s not what you’re probably thinking.

The upcoming presentation will take place at Steve Jobs Theater on the Apple Park headquarters in Cupertino, California tomorrow at 10am. As noted by iDB’s SVP of Wallpapers Jim Gresham, the video stream is showing some curious things on the big screen, like the Lock screen of an iPhone depicting Marvel’s “Captain America” star Chris Evans calling in.

“Captain America is calling in on the Apple live stream,” wrote Benjamin Mayo as he tweeted out an image (seen top of post) screenshotted from the video stream. The video cycles through a few other Lock screen images that similarly depict a Hollywood star calling in.

This is undoubtedly yet another not-so-subtle reference to the upcoming video service that will reportedly sport original programming featuring Hollywood stars such as Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, Jennifer Garner, director JJ Abrams and others.

JJ Abrams is directing some of the science-fiction focused programming for Apple’s service while Aniston, Witherspoon and Garner are starring in the television shows that the Cupertino tech giant has purchased. They’er all expected to be in attendance tomorrow.

Most of the time, however, the live stream simply shows the presentation screen with the default Flurry screen saver in macOS or just empty audience seats (some of which are no doubt reserved for the powerful Hollywood figures who will be in attendance tomorrow).

This seems to be a form of marketing rather than a mistake made by an overzealous employee.

“The stream’s been live for a few hours at this point, it’s obviously not a mistake. This is the viral hype iteration of Apple (and in line with Tim’s meme-y tweets last week),” Benjamin opined.
