Like most any other device, your Amazon Echo speaker uses software that needs to be updated from time to time. What’s nice about it is that your speaker automatically downloads and installs software updates as long as it’s connected to Wi-Fi.

But, if you want to check for updates yourself, it’s as simple as a command. Here’s how to check for Amazon Echo speaker software updates.

Check your Amazon Echo device software version

Each Amazon device, from the Echo to the Echo Dot and beyond, have a different software version per device and generation.

To see which version your device should have, you can check out Amazon’s Alexa Device Software Updates page. Then, to see which version your device does have in the Alexa app, first access the device settings.

1) Open the menu on the left side and tap Settings.

2) Select Device Settings.

Check for Amazon Echo software updates

As mentioned, your Amazon Echo speaker will download and install updates automatically while connected to wi-fi, but if you want to check for yourself, here’s how.

  • For devices with or without a screen, you can simply say, “Alexa, check for software updates.”
  • If your device has a screen and you want to check manually, you can swipe up and choose Settings > Device Options > Check for Software Updates.

Alexa will let you know whether or not your device software is up to date. If it’s not, the update will be installed as long as the device stays connected to the internet and is uninterrupted during the download and installation. Your device’s status light will pulse blue as the update installs.

Wrapping it up

While you probably won’t have to check for software updates on your Amazon Echo speaker yourself, it’s good to know how just in case. And with one simple command, it can’t get much easier.
