A questionable new report claims that the next model of AirPods is launching on March 29

If you believe a sketchy new report that was published Friday, Apple might launch its next-generation AirPods at the end of this month on Friday, March 29.

Spanish blog Applesfera (Google Translate) claims to have received this information from multiple sources. Keep in mind that the blog has no reliable track record reporting unconfirmed Apple rumors so this could very well be nothing more than a simple educated guess.

According to the report, the original AirPods will reach an end-of-life phase on March 28 when they should be pulled from sale and replaced by AirPods 2 the following day.

BuzzFeed News heard from its sources that the Cupertino company may be holding a press event on Monday, March 25. It would make sense to launch AirPods 2 later that week.

Apple could capitalize on the popularity of AirPods by launching their successor as soon as possible. If the next AirPods are launching across Apple Stores and other retail channels on March 29, expect them to go on pre-order right after the event has wrapped up.

The new AirPods may feature health sensors, wireless charging support, improved Bluetooth range and better grip thanks to a special matte coating.

According to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, a more substantial update to the wireless earbuds can be expected in 2020 featuring an all-new design along with such improvements as sweat resistance, Hey Siri support, active noise cancellation and other enhancements.

How do we know AirPods 2 exist in the first place?

In November, unreleased AirPods models (“A2031” and “A2032”) received certification from the Bluetooth Special Interest Group, essentially giving them the green light to move forward.

While the first-generation AirPods come in white only, the next version could bring a much-desired new black color option and possibly other color choices as well.

Apple’s March 25 event is thought to focus on the company’s long-rumored news and video subscription services, but no one really knows what it’s going to be about until Apple formally announces the press conference and its executives take the stage to deliver the latest updates.

Aside from subscription services, the event may serve as a launchpad for new hardware like the long-overdue AirPower wireless charger, a fifth-generation iPad mini, a new affordable iPad upgraded from 9.7 inches to 10.2 inches and, of course, the next AirPods.

Apple could opt to launch these new gadgets quietly via press releases.
