Prevent new tab pop-ups in mobile Safari with TabBlocker

I browse the web somewhat frequently on my iPhone and iPad, and while I love the mobile web-browsing experience, I don’t much appreciate it when I’m suddenly jolted to a new Safari tab by way of unwanted ads and pop-ups.

As it would seem, I’m not the only one who dislikes this experience, as iOS developer Droom0ne has just launched a new free jailbreak tweak called TabBlocker with the goal of preventing this headache from ever happening.

Once installed, TabBlocker can prevent specified websites from opening new tabs in the Safari app. The ensuing example, provided by the developer, demonstrates how the tweak prevents a specified website from opening a new tab:

TabBlocker adds a preference pane to the Settings app where you can configure it to your liking:

Here, you can:

  • Specify the websites to block new tabs from (separate with a semicolon [;])
    • Enter a specific URL
    • Enable the “Contains” option to designate the names of websites instead
  • Disable the new tab animation to prevent disturbances

Upon setting up the websites that you’d like to block new tabs from, the tweak should take care of the rest. According to the developer, TabBlocker can bypass any anti-adblocker, making it virtually fool-proof for your everyday web browsing.

If you’re familiar with being shoved around in the mobile Safari app, then you might want to give TabBlocker a shot. It’s available as a free download from Cydia’s BigBoss repository and plays nicely with all jailbroken iOS 11 devices.
