230 new emojis are coming in 2019, including a much-requested white heart

The Unicode Consortium has finalized the emoji list for 2019 which includes a total of 230 new characters, including the previously drafted candidates such as a flamingo, otter and guide dog, as well as a waffle, hindu temple, sari, sloth and mate.

According to Emojipedia, some of the changes include a much-requested new white heart emoji along with all-new colors for circles and squares, additional emojis representing people with various disabilities (as proposed by Apple last year), a gender-inclusive couple, plus emojis which permit a mix of skin tones for people holding hands.

To illustrate the latter point, the people holding hands emoji now have four combinations of gender and all the various combinations of skin tones, for a total of 71 new variants.

Actual implementations may support skin-tone combinations for other multi-person emoji.

The Emoji 12.0 update, according to today’s announcement by The Unicode Consortium, is comprised of 59 distinct new emojis, or 75 when gender variations are taken into account. All in all, there are 230 new emojis in total when all the various skin tone options are counted.

The new emoji are listed on the Unicode website along with sample images, but keep in mind that vendors like Apple and Google typically tweak their looks to fit their overall emoji designs.

Apple will likely adopt these emoticons across its operating systems in the fall.
