Apple modifies App Store rules to allow gifting of in-app purchases

A significant change was discovered today in the App Store Review Guidelines regarding the gifting of in-app purchases. In the past, Apple has forbidden developers from allowing the gifting of IAP content, but with the new alterations to the rules, the company has apparently changed its stance.

Here’s what it says exactly:

Apps may enable gifting of items that eligible for in-app purchase to others. Such gifts may only be refunded to the original purchaser and may not be exchanged.

Previously the Guidelines said something like “apps should not directly or indirectly enable gifting of in-app purchases,” so we’re talking a complete 180 here. Now IAP gifting isn’t enabled yet—Apple will likely have to add some new UI elements to the App Store—but it’s clearly on the way.
