Apple nixes nearly a dozen sections from Mac App Store’s Categories tab

Apple has quietly removed as many as eleven sections from the Categories tab found on Mac App Store, including Finance, Medical, Travel and Education.

It’s unclear what prompted the Cupertino firm to nix nearly a dozen frequently-used sections from the Categories tab, but it now lists just ten categories versus the 21 categories it had when an overhauled Mac App Store launched alongside macOS Mojave in September 2018.

MacRumors reports that the missing categories include:

  • Education
  • Entertainment
  • Finance
  • Health & Fitness
  • Lifestyle
  • Medical
  • News
  • Reference
  • Sports
  • Travel
  • Weather

Following this change, the Categories tab is now down to these 10 sections:

  • Business
  • Developer Tools
  • Games
  • Graphics & Design
  • Music
  • Photography
  • Productivity
  • Social Networking
  • Utilities
  • Video

Apple Support has confirmed on Twitter that this is expected behavior, but didn’t detail why those categories were nixed from the Mac App Store’s Categories tab in the first place.

As per Apple’s documentation, developers can assign a desired category to their apps.

This is especially important as that’s where users find an app when they browse a specific category or filter search results, plus it also determines placement in the Categories tab.
