WhatsApp testing Dark Mode & previewing videos in push notifications

Facebook-owned WhatsApp is testing a darkened interface in its iPhone app, as well as previewing videos in notifications, according to hidden code strings uncovered by WABetaInfo.

WhatsApp recently enabled image and GIF previews in rich notifications and now beta users are available to preview video attachments directly from WhatsApp’s push notification, too.

Perhaps more important than that (at least to some people) is the fact that WhatsApp is busy implementing a Dark Mode-like user interface theme. Early screenshots indicate the darkened interface is still work in progress and a bit rough around the edges, but we can clearly see that a darker background is paired with some elegant gray styling to a great effect.

The dark interface and previewing videos from notification are not live in WhatsApp’s most recent 2.18.100 update, but watch this space as we make sure to keep you in the loop.

Speaking of which, WhatsApp 2.18.100 brought three enhancements: support for the native display resolution on iPhone XS Max, consecutive voice messaging improvements and an overhauled bubble menu with easier access to the app’s contextual quick actions.
