If you’ve ever been heavily-invested in theming your jailbroken handset before, then the name WinterBoard might ring a bell. Unfortunately, WinterBoard hasn’t seen much T.L.C. in recent years, and there are no signs that it will any time soon.
Enter SnowBoard, a brand-new and lightweight successor to the renowned WinterBoard theming platform by SparkDev and Dennis D. Bednarz.
Citing SnowBoard’s Cydia description, the novel platform works with jailbroken handsets running iOS 7 and later and supports most formats used by many popular theming engines.
When you install SnowBoard, you won’t find an app icon on your Home screen, but you will see a new preference pane in the Settings app:
Here, you can:
- Toggle SnowBoard on or off on demand
- Choose a theme you want to use
- Just drag from the “Disabled” to the “Enabled” section
- Customize your Home screen icon attributes
- Configure custom app icon corner radius
- Configure custom app icon scale
- Hide app icon labels
When you install compatible themes from Cydia, you should find them in the “Select Theme…” menu. There, you can quickly apply them and switch between them on demand by moving them from one section to the other.
Another neat feature baked into SnowBoard is that you can tap and hold on any app icon to put your device into ‘jiggle’ mode and then double-tap on an app icon to customize it even further:
In this interface, you can:
- Replace an app icon with alternative app icons
- Replace an app icon with another existing app icon
- Replace an app icon with an image from your Camera Roll
Right out of the box, SnowBoard looks like a promising way of customizing your jailbroken handset’s aesthetic. Not only does it offer compelling features and extensive compatibility, but it does all of this without hogging critical system resources.
While I’ve never been heavily invested in the theming aspect of jailbreaking myself, those who have should find SnowBoard to be a refreshing experience. If you’re interested in giving SnowBoard a try, then you can download it for free from Cydia’s Chariz repository.
