Tim Cook named recipient of Newseum’s 2017 Free Expression Award

Thursday, Apple’s chief executive Tim Cook got selected as the recipient of Newseum’s 2017 Free Expression Award in the Free Speech category. The organization recognized Cook’s contributions to issues like racial equality, privacy, the environment, access to education, LGBT rights and more. The Newseum, for those not in the know, is an interactive museum based in Washington, D.C. that promotes free expression and the five freedoms of the First Amendment to the United States Constitution.

Cook will also be recognized for his leadership in creating technology that has had “a profound impact on how we communicate.”

It was not lost on the Newseum that Cook has leveraged his visibility as the public face of Apple to take a public stand on major societal issues.

In addition to Cook, the following individuals will receive awards:

  • U.S. Rep. John Lewis will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award.
  • Executive Director of Becket Law Kristina Arriaga de Bucholz will receive the Religious Freedom Award.
  • ABC News Chief Global Affairs Correspondent and “This Week with George Stephanopoulos” Co-anchor Martha Raddatz will receive the Free Press Award.
  • Playboy Founder and Editor-in-Chief Hugh Hefner and Hatch Beauty Chairman Christie Hefner will jointly receive the Arts and Entertainment Award.

Cook will accept his award during a special event at the Newseum on April 18, 2017.
