Other World Computing (OWC) expanded its ThunderBay lineup of storage devices with the introduction of the speedy ThunderBay mini 4 portable SSD storage with RAID 5 two years ago. Recently, OWC introduced its highest capacity and fastest desktop SSD configurations yet by adding 10, 20, 30 and 40TB SSDs to the ThunerBay mini 4.
The ThunderBay 4 mini has four 2.5-inch drive bays that now accept SSD configurations in 10TB, 20TB, 30TB and 40TB capacities with sustained performance of up to 1,136 megabytes per second in RAID 4 mode and up to 1,314 megabytes per second RAID 0 performance.
These remarkable speeds over Thunderbolt 2 connection are enough for professional editing of multiple streams of 4K video. The ThunderBay 4 mini is outfitted with two Thunderbolt 2 ports and supports Thunderbolt daisy-chaining of up to six devices and external displays.
The pro accessory comes pre-configured in RAID 4 for optimal SSD performance and data redundancy. RAID 5 option is supported, too. The ThunderBay mini 4 has 75 percent faster rebuild times than hardware RAID thanks to its enterprise-class software RAID engine, called SoftRAID.
SoftRAID for ThunderBay supports RAID 0, 1, 4, 5 and 1+0. Unlike traditional software RAID solutions, SoftRAID lets you use specific preset configurations to fit specific workflows and maximize performance when recording audio, editing 4K video, creating a multimedia server and more.
The new 10TB/20TB/30TB/40TB ThunderBay 4 mini RAID configurations are now available starting at $7,800 from MacSales.com and authorized resellers.
The least expensive 1TB ThunderBay SSD will set you back $898.
If you don’t need the power and performance of SSD, the ThunderBay 4 mini is also available with 2TB/4TB/8TB hard drives, costing $648/$718/$888.
