How to reset your Apple ID security questions and answers

When you create your Apple ID, you’re asked to create security questions. Here’s how to reset Apple ID security questions and answers if you forget them.

If your Apple ID uses 2FA

It’s almost certain that your Apple ID uses two-factor authentication (2FA), and in that case, there is no need to remember or reset your Apple ID questions. In fact, you won’t even see the ‘Security questions’ section in your Apple ID account settings if it uses the more advanced two-factor authentication.

However, if you have not used your Apple ID with an updated iOS or macOS device in the last half a decade, then here’s how to reset your Apple ID questions and answers.

Reset your Apple ID questions and answers

1) Visit the Apple ID sign-in page on your favorite web browser and sign in using your Apple ID email address and password.

2) Click Sign-In and Security.

3) Select Account Security.

4) Here, you will see a Security questions section if your Apple ID still uses it and is not using two-factor authentication. Click Change security questions.

5) Choose new security questions, enter their answers that you can remember, and hit Update.

6) Lastly, enter your Apple ID password when asked and click Done.

Earlier method

If you’ve forgotten your Apple ID security question answers, then you’d better hope you’ve got a rescue email address on file. You can use your rescue email address as a means of bypassing and resetting your Apple ID’s security questions and answers to update them to something you will remember. To do that, follow these steps:

1) Visit the Apple ID sign-in page on your favorite web browser and sign in.

2) Go to the Security section and make sure that you have a rescue email address set up. If you don’t, add one; if you do, click on the blue Change Questions… button to continue.

Having trouble?

In some instances, you may not be able to reset your security questions. Apple recommends that you call the company directly when these circumstances occur, as they’re normally just trying to protect your personal identity and assets. Apple can then help you over the phone with steps to reset your security questions for your Apple ID.
