Opera Coast, a third-party web browser for iOS, has been updated in the App Store today with real-time news and notifications while Opera Mini now supports 3D Touch shortcuts for accessing your favorite sites by lightly pressing the app’s icon on the Home screen of the iPhone 6s or iPhone 6s Plus.
Opera Mini also integrates with iOS 9’s Spotlight Search and has a few other refinements mentioned further below.
In Opera Coast, you can now preview headlines from sites you follow with a new feature, called For You. This basically aggregates online articles into a single tile, giving you an at-a-glance overview of your news right inside the browser.
“Our goal is to make news so attractive, fast and relevant that Opera Coast users won’t need to use news apps to get their daily updates,” said Huib Kleinhout, Product Manager for Opera Coast.
These stories are For You
Basically a news aggregator, For You collates articles from the sites on your Opera Coast home screen into one continuous tile.
“Our goal is to make news so attractive, fast and relevant that Opera Coast users won’t need to use other apps like Apple News, Flipboard, Facebook Notify or Nuzzle to get their daily updates,” said Huib Kleinhout, Product Manager for Opera Coast.
If you’re using Opera, you are probably bookmarking your favorite sites in the browser. In a nutshell, the For You section creates a personalized news feed from those favorites with a major focus on visuals presentation, similar to Stories in Snapchat.
You can easily opt-out of content you’re not into anymore, give ratings to the articles you love and switch between reading views. The For You feed updates every ten minutes, or whenever sites have new stories to share. And yes, you shall receive a notification after your news feed has been refreshed with new content.
To check out the For You feed, tap a new tile on Opera’s start screen.
Other tidbits
In addition to Snapchat-like stories, Opera Coast users can also use 3D Touch Peek and Pop gestures on the latest iPhones. For instance, you can press a For You tile to get an instant view of the latest updates of that site. And if you own an iPad Pro, rest assured that Opera Coast has been fully optimized to take advantage of that massive display.
Opera Mini and 3D Touch
If you own an iPhone 6s or iPhone 6s Plus, you can press lightly Opera Mini’s icon on the Home screen to quickly access your first four Speed Dials.
In addition to 3D Touch, the refreshed application now syncs your Speed Dials across devices, introduces a brand new default theme and a new setting to enable full screen mode and enables support for iOS 9’s Spotlight Search so you can find your Speed Dial data in Spotlight.
