This was the most played music on Beats 1 last month

Apple Music three pilars

As Apple and its executives continue to point out, what sets Beats 1 apart from other streaming radio services is its human curation. Instead of software algorithms, Beats 1 features real-life DJs that play whatever song they are feeling at any given moment.

But that doesn’t mean you won’t hear music get repeated. Quartz tracked the Beats 1 playlist throughout the month of July, and according to its data, out of 12,445 songs, only 3,371 were unique. This means that each song was played an average of 3.7 times.

That’s a lot of repeats, which is something that users have complained about since Beats 1 launched in late June. The Weeknd’s hit song Can’t Feel My Face was played a staggering 107 times in July, and 18 of the top 20 most popular tracks played over 50 times.

Something else that frequently pops up in Beats 1 user complaints is that it’s very partial to hip-hop music, and Quartz’ data once again supports this. Songs in the hip-hop genre received 1,726 plays last month, more than Alternative and House songs combined.

All of this being said, some 3000+ songs played on Beats 1 last month were unique, and more than 20 genres were covered. So there is some degree of diversity here. I know I have discovered several songs while listening to the service, that I may not have heard otherwise.

Beats 1 Radio launched on June 30, alongside Apple Music, and Apple has said that “millions” are tuning in to listen each day.
