If you set up a Yahoo account on your Mac, iPhone, iPod touch or iPad in order to sync data with Yahoo Contacts and access Yahoo Mail through Apple’s stock Mail app, you should read this.
According to the Internet firm, Mail and Contacts syncing on older Mac and iOS devices will no longer be supported after June 15. In addition, a number of Yahoo properties will close in the coming weeks, including Yahoo Maps.
“In order to maintain focus on the security, speed and functionality of Yahoo Mail on the latest systems, we are no longer supporting Yahoo Mail on the built-in Mail app for devices prior to iOS 5 on June 15, 2015,” reads a passage in Yahoo’s Q2 2015 Progress Report on product prioritization.
So if you use Yahoo Mail through the stock Mail app on an iOS 4 device or earlier, you won’t be able to access Yahoo Mail through Apple Mail come June 15.
Of course, the affected iOS fans can continue to use Yahoo Mail through the Safari browser at mail.yahoo.com. Owners of iOS devices running iOS 5 or later won’t be affected by this change.
As for Yahoo Contacts, the company is phasing out syncing support on older Macs. On June 15, owners of Macs running OS X version prior to Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion will no longer be able to sync Yahoo Contacts through Apple’s stock Contacts app.
If you’re on a Mac with OS X 10.7 Lion or earlier, you’ll still be able to access Yahoo Contacts through Yahoo Mail on your browser.
In other service changes, Nokia HERE Maps-powered Yahoo Maps website at maps.yahoo.com will close at the end of June. Yahoo will continue to support maps on Yahoo Search and on several other properties including Flickr.
A few other Yahoo properties will be shuttered as well.
Yahoo Music in France and Canada and Yahoo Movies in Spain will close in mid-June. Yahoo Philippines homepage and genre-specific media sites will be redirect to the Yahoo Singapore homepage.
Other services closing by the end of June: Yahoo TV in the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Spain, Italy and Canada; and Yahoo Autos in the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Spain and Italy.
In early July, Yahoo Entertainment in Singapore will close.
The company said these decisions haven’t been made lightly as they needed to realign their resources to focus on stuff that matters.
