Upcoming app to allow streaming of all episodes of The Simpsons

Good news for Simpsons fans this morning. FX Networks CEO John Landgraf announced this week that the group is creating a standalone app for the popular Springfield family, which will allow users to stream all 24 seasons of the TV show to their devices.

Speaking at the Television Critics Association winter press tour yesterday, Landgraf offered up some details about the app. He says it’ll feature tons of content including all 500+ episodes of The Simpsons, which will be available for online streaming at all times…

Here’s the report from Quartz:

“The Simpsons content will be curated in a separate app, which Landgraf said will be “integrated with and linked through” the FXNOW app. The Simpsons app will contain a multitude of Simpsons clips as well as full episodes (all 530 episodes will be available at all times, not cycled through at various intervals), all of which will “be infinitely cross-referenced and sortable and searchable in various different ways,” Landgraf said.”

The app sounds awesome, but unfortunately, as usual with these kinds of things, there’s a huge catch. Much of (if not all of) the app’s content will only be accessible by subscribers to cable providers that have a deal with FXNOW, which right now is about half.

“And right now, FXNOW only has deals with about 50% of television providers nationally, including AT&T U-verse, Cablevision, and Comcast. While Landgraf said additional agreements will be made this year, he was unable to estimate what percentage of subscribers will be covered by August.”

Still, for folks who qualify, what a sweet deal. The entire Simpsons library available anytime, and completely searchable? Sign me up. I just have two questions: one, will the app support AirPlay? And two, how long before we see this with other popular TV shows?

The Simpsons app is expected to launch in August of this year, and it sounds like it’s going to be US-only for at least a while.
