Big Jawbone Jambox update improves streaming to iOS devices and more

Big Jambox Review 04

When it comes to portable Bluetooth speakers, the Jambox is by far my favorite. It may not be the best-sounding, or give you the most bang for your buck, but I love its build quality and design, and the fact that Jawbone issues regular updates.

In fact, it just rolled out an update today for its Big Jambox line, bringing its firmware to version 2.0. The update features new AAC support for iOS 6.1, which will provide better audio streaming with less dropout, and improved battery life…

Here’s the full change log for the 2.0 firmware (via AllThingsD):

  • Improved audio streaming and fewer dropouts at greater distances with AAC support*
  • Two additional hours of battery life and better battery life on paired devices*
  • Control volume from either your mobile device or BIG JAMBOX; volume stays in sync**
  • Disable all voice prompts and tones with Silent Mode

So in addition to better audio streaming, the AAC support improves battery life by two hours. AAC is the default audio format used by iOS devices, and Jawbone says the new support brings added power efficiency. Total estimated battery life: 17 hours.

Additionally, the speaker’s volume control is now synced with your mobile device. So when you change the volume on your phone, the audio adjusts on the speaker. And also, gaming fans can now pair their Big Jambox with their Playstation Vita system.

The update is free, and Big Jambox owners can download it by logging into Jawbone’s MyTalk portal and following the directions. You’ll have to hook it up to your computer (its not OTA), and you’ll want to make sure your devices are on at least iOS 6.1.
