AT&T’s FaceTime limits could violate FCC rules

AT&T sent shockwaves through the tech community last week when it announced its future plans for iOS 6's new FaceTime over Cellular feature. The good news is that it won't be charging separately for the service, but the bad news is only customers on its new Mobile Share data plans will be able to use it.

As you can imagine, this has folks upset — particularly AT&T customers who are still on unlimited, or other legacy, data plans. Why should they have to switch to a [likely] more expensive data plan to use the feature? Well, according to Public Knowledge's senior lawyer John Bergmayer, they shouldn't have to...

Final settlement talks fail between Apple and Samsung CEOs

With the witness testimony stage over with, and the trial set to be handed over to the jury this week, Judge Lucy Koh pleaded with CEOs from both companies to meet one last time today to try and resolve their differences.

Well according to Samsung attorney Kevin Johnson, the two CEOs did speak today. But, as you might have guessed, the last-minute settlement talks failed. It looks like the high-stakes trial is going to be left up to the jury...

A report came out last week from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (or MIT), claiming that the iPhone had crossed a "significant threshold" in mobile security. In fact, it deemed Apple's platform one of the safest in the category.

But according to a new study, hackers aren't having any problems cracking through the security of iOS applications. The data comes from Arxan Technologies, in the form of an infographic, regarding iOS and Android app security...

I have a love/hate relationship with BiteSMS. On the on hand, it's my most used application and I can't seem to find a decent replacement that offers as many features, but on the other hand, it's the only application that sometimes often causes my iPhone to crash.

I've tried to replace it many times but I always come back to it simply because its feature list has been unmatched so far. Today, BiteSMS gets that much better with version 6.3 now available in Cydia...

iPad expected to push HP into largest quarterly loss

Could HP become the Nokia of PCs? Although the largest PC seller in the US, HP is expected to announce record-breaking quarterly losses later this week. As Nokia never could adapt to a market now dominated by smartphones, HP foresees nearly $9 billion in losses - much from the runaway adoption of Apple's iPad.

On word that PC sales in the US were down 12.7 percent during the second quarter, HP is expected to loose between $8.5 and $8.9 billion in stock value, according to the Associated Press. Meanwhile, record iPad sales are helping Apple become the world's most valuable company...

Apple has effectively broken the mold for retail chains with its successful line of Apple Stores. Located on expensive prime real estate, and designed inside and out to be completely unique, nothing about Apple's stores are average.

That includes performance as well. A report earlier this year found that Apple's retail stores made roughly 17 times more than the average retailer — including jewelry stores. And today we find out some more interesting stats...

Bloombox Kickstarter project gives iPhone owners flower power

Apple becomes most valuable publicly-traded company of all time

Apple's stock has taken down several major milestones in the past couple of days. Last Thursday, AAPL closed at an all-time high of $636.34 per share, and it has since surpassed its all-time high of $644.

Today, the stock is trading at a staggering $665. And given the fact that it has 937.41 million shares outstanding, that gives it a market cap of $623.05 billion — the highest ever for a publicly-traded company...

Judge tells jury: Samsung destroyed emails — but so did Apple

If the long-running courtroom battle between Apple and Samsung were a football game, the South Korean company would have received today a favorable call from the ref. U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh will tell jurors later this week that both companies destroyed emails, overturning a previous ruling inferring Samsung was solely to blame.

In instructions to be given the jury set to begin deliberations Wednesday, Koh will give identical instructions regarding company emails destroyed:

Both companies "failed to preserve evidence" that could be used in the litigation, Koh will say. "Whether this fact is important to you in reaching a verdict in this case is for you to decide."
