Picks of the Week: Superman, Stamped, Fanhattan TV

It’s that time of the week! We frequently comb the far reaches of the App Store to bring you awesome apps for your downloading pleasure.

This week, we’ve got a super fun game for the iPhone and iPad, an app for rating things you like best, and a movie/TV discovery tool with a unique twist. We hope you enjoy this week’s picks!

Superman

It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s Superman on your iPhone!

That’s right, Chillingo has brought the Man of Steel to the App Store in the form of a side-scrolling tower defense game. Fans of the original comics will undoubtedly fall in love with Superman for iOS, as you battle to save Metropolis from Lex Luthor’s diabolical scheme.

The actual gameplay isn’t as fantastic as it could be, but Superman fans shouldn’t have a problem dropping $0.99 on this throwback title. You control Superman with a classic d-pad layout. The game is very retro, and the graphics harken back to the old days of playing Superman on the N64. You have access to pretty much all of Superman’s powers as you fly around Metropolis.

With fun music, great cut scenes, and decent gameplay, Superman is worth checking out. Superman for iPhone and iPod touch is available for $0.99 in the App Store, while Superman HD is available on the iPad for $2.99.

Stamped

Stamped has been getting a lot of attention in the press as of late. Like Oink, Stamped lets you rate what you like. Whether it’s restaurants, books, movies, or music, Stamped lets you share what you like best.

Unlike other rating services, Stamped is only able to give one recommendation: 5 stars. If you stamp something, that means you are totally recommending it. When you create a Stamped profile, you give your unique stamp for things you want your friends to check out. You can also follow friends and trusted sources for recommendations.

The iPhone app lets you add photos to your stamps, and there’s Opentable, Amazon, Fandango and iTunes integration. That means you can, based on stamps, make reservations, buy books, get movie tickets, and download songs in-app. You can search and share your stamps on Twitter and Facebook.

Stamped is available for free in the App Store.

Fanhattan TV

Fanhattan TV has been considered one of the best movie/TV show discovery tools on the market for a long time, and the service recently launched an iPhone and iPad app. In case you didn’t know, Fanhattan TV is a video content discovery app that pulls in titles from Netflix, Hulu Plus, and iTunes.

You can browse content based on Rotten Tomatoes reviews, Metacritic, soundtracks, actors, trailers, etc. Recommendations from friends on Twitter and Facebook are also integrated. The best part is that you can choose how you want to watch something. You can chose to rent, buy, or subscribe on the aforementioned services (Hulu, iTunes, etc.) in the Fanhattan app. Once you decide where you want to watch, you’re automatically pulled into the associated app on your iDevice.

Fanhattan TV is an innovate take on video content discovery with a great price tag. Both the iPhone app and iPad app are available for free in the App Store.

That’s it for this week’s picks! Let us know what you think of these apps in the comments!
