AT&T Makes International Data Plans “a Bit Less Very Expensive”

If you’re planning to travel overseas with your AT&T iPhone, you’ve probably already looked into international data plans, and figured out it was a complete rip off. And yes, you are right, international data usage on AT&T will cost you an arm and a leg.

In order to make this slightly less ridiculously expensive, AT&T has revamped its international data plan options, basically doubling their offering while keeping the same prices. It’s still way overpriced, but at least you get more data…

TechCrunch posted those new pricings:

  • $24.99 gets you 50MB (used to get you 20MB)
  • $49.99 gets you 125MB (used to get you 50MB)
  • $99.99 gets you 275MB (used to get you 100MB)
  • $199.99 gets you 800MB (used to get you 200MB)
  • Every 10 megabytes you use over your plan will cost you $10

You actually get more than twice what you used to get for the same price. It’s a generous effort but unless you can afford that, there are actually better ways to travel with an iPhone internationally.

There is no doubt that if you’re traveling overseas, your best bet is to unlock your iPhone and get a local SIM card.

iDB regulars might remember my series of posts about traveling with an iPhone internationally. In 2009-2010, my wife and I took an 8-month long trip around the world, and I documented my experience getting pay-as-you-go plans on my iPhone in each country, which was a much more cost-effective option than paying AT&T those incredible fees.
