How to Get Back on AT&T’s Unlimited Data Plan

AT&T no longer offers its new or existing customer’s unlimited data. This is unfortunate, but not permanent. This method will allow you to have unlimited data for use with any phone on any account on the AT&T Wireless network.

This guide is the culmination of several people’s struggles in getting AT&T to give them back something they deserve. Originally posted back in October and updated a little while after, we’re back to give it to you again! This time with an easier to follow guide!

The following is a guest post by my good Twitter friend Mathew Rice.

Prerequisites

  • One first generation iPhone (aka iPhone 2G)
  • One unactivated or valid (working) microSIM card or Standard SIM card (deactivated SIM cards will not work)
  • Free time to deal with potential issues that may arise (resolutions detailed below article)

The Process

The first thing you need to do is obtain a First Generation iPhone, commonly known as the iPhone 2G and how we will refer to it from here on out.
Once you’ve obtained an iPhone 2G, you’ll want to give it a full restore in iTunes. You can do this with your SIM card installed or without. You’ll have to put your SIM card in later anyways, so if you don’t need to use your actual phone while the process completes, then install your SIM and save yourself a step later.

Once the restore has completed, iTunes will bring you to the phone activation screen (assuming your SIM card is installed, if it’s not, disconnect your iPhone, insert the SIM card and reconnect your iPhone). Fill in the required account info and proceed. Whatever options you choose during activation won’t really matter as certain account features you already have will override, like unlimited family messaging and the likes. As well, the great part about this portion of the process is that Unlimited data is non-optional :p – At the end of the activation process, iTunes should tell you something like, “You’ll receive an email when your activation is complete”. Once you’ve got the email, all is well and you now have an Unlimited Data plan.

You can verify this many ways like dialing *DATA# from your phone. You’ll then receive a text message with details about your data plan where it will indicate you have unlimited data. You can also log-in to your AT&T account online and go to the features portion of your account to see unlimited data for whichever phone line you used during activation.

Read on for info on known issues and for answers to frequently asked questions.

Known Issues

If the iPhone 2G you are using is still assigned to another AT&T account, activation might not complete, you might not receive the activation complete email and after a long wait, you will get an, “unable to complete activation email”. This is the most common reason for failed activations. If you know the account assignment status of the iPhone 2G, make sure you replace the iPhone 2G on that account with another phone first. This means AT&T has to have the replacement phone on-file for the account that once had the iPhone 2G you are using.

Resolution – You’ll need to call AT&T and have them manually activate the phone for you. It helps to tell them you were trying to activate your unlimited data iPhone plan through iTunes with your iPhone. As well, you can go to any company owned AT&T store and they can get you setup as well. Make sure to bring the iPhone 2G with you and that you are or have with you, the primary account holder.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What if I am on a Family Plan?
Answer: The process is the same, just make sure you are or know the account info of the primary account holder

What if I am on an Employee Plan?
Answer: The process is the same, just make sure you are or know the account info of the primary account holder

My microSIM card does not fit in this iPhone 2G!
Answer: That’s right; you’ll need to get a microSIM adapter or a Standard SIM card. You can get the latter from any company owned AT&T store. They can also take care of the whole process for you too. So if you go that route, have them set you up. Make sure to bring the iPhone 2G with you.

I got a text message from AT&T telling me they switched my data plan!
Answer: This is normal, if you place your SIM card into an AT&T known smartphone like an iPhone 3G or newer, AT&T will automatically switch you to the $30 unlimited data plan. This is because the iTunes quoted $20 unlimited data plan is only qualified for iPhone 2G devices. No worries though, you still have unlimited data! Go on, check, dial *DATA# :p

Your Guide Sucks, it didn’t work for me!
Answer: This guide is for reference only. There are no guarantees nor where there any given. However, are you sure you followed all the steps and read carefully? Are you or do you have the primary account holders info? Make sure you are or do! You can also check out the original article and sift through the comments to see if anyone else has had a similar issue like yours.

  1. Interesting article! I hope that someone tries this and give feedback on weather or not its successful!

  2. I tried it when it was first posted a few months back and got 3 iPhones with unlimited data. The only strange thing is that it has been almost 4 months after i did the last 2 (3gs/4) and they still have the iPhone Data Plan+200 Text for $20 :). And i receive the text/email almost every month but the data plan never changes. On the last two i did have to call to activate the iPhone 2g maybe thats why.

  3. I just wish that the unlimited plan included tethering. I know this will never happen though

  4. No matter how hard I try to consume more data, each month I barely use 500~700Mb, lol

  5. Wait so, those of us that were grandfathered into the unlimited data plan will lose it?

    1. No Tony, no. If you presently have the unlimited data plan, you get to keep your unlimited data plan forever or until you cancel that particular account.

      1. Yes, because they only officially sold iPhone 2G in the US, meaning even if you bought it outside the US, it originated from the US. Makes sense?

  6. This worked for me back when it was 1st posted. I had some struggles but at the end i was finally able to get unlimited. Was without a phone for about 5 days

  7. I have an iphone4 and gave up my unlimited plan so that I can tether it to my laptop. After using if for about three weeks, I decided tethering was not for me and called AT&T to cancel the tethering as well as ask for my unlimited data plan back. They agreed. I’m sure if I gave it up again, I won’t be able to ask for it back again.

  8. It happened to. Having old 2G iphone upgraded to iphone4 with limited data plan. Waiting for jailbrak,i put my sim to old 2G. After few days i switch back sim to new iphone4 and minutes later i got message
from AT&T that my existing limited data plan in not sufficient for my iphone4 and I’m getting upgraded to 30$ unlimited plan. This is my story.AT&T did this on its own without any request.

    1. Hi Roman, Thank you for sharing! Could you explain a little more in details? Did you re-set your old iphone 1st gen to its original setting and then activated your sim in your old 2G with itune? I was trying to figure out an easy away to get an unlimited data plan for my iphone 4. I want to try your method. Hope it works for me as well.

  9. Great News!! (at least for me :D)

I might try, I have some broken 2g iphones, i’ll to fix them and check if this works for me, last month had a problem with att home internet and need to use iphone for theter internet… 6GB more in the the end of the month… their landline serivce is horrible as their customer service

  10. This worked great! Went from $45 a month for Text+Data to $40. Five bucks might not be a lot but it helps! Thanks for this amazing post!

  11. So theoretically you’re saying if I had all that you say I had, and the account information of someone else, then I could not only have unlimited data, buy FREE unlimited data? Yay!

  12. What if you buy the iPhone 2g from someone off craigslist and they aren’t willing or able to come with you to an AT&T store?

    1. The phone itself, once restored via iTunes, is a blank slate. You have nothing to worry about. Phones in general can be activated on multiple lines with AT&T. It’s a fundamental flaw in their system and also a contributing factor to the one major issue listed in this article.

  13. Welcome GF iPhone forum. Keep the 2G and just save yourself the $10 per month. No problems, no violation of TOS. All is good. Thanks for not grandfathering older users into your +$$ increase.

  14. So i have to open an att account first before i do this? im lost. Im currently using simple mobile

  15. @gerald you need to have a Att account 1st.

@shannon your contract length doesnt matter at all.

i did this a few months back. i went to best buy and bought an iphone 4 with a new contract, and then i bought an extra sim card (full size) it cost something like 30 dollars. then i went home popped the micro sim out of my new iphone4 and set it aside, and i borrowed friends iphone 2g. placed the new unactivated sim into 2g and activated it with itunes. waited a few minutes got the att message saying data plan has been switched from the 2Gb plan. then after that i trimmed the full size card down to the micro size and put it in my iphone 4 a day later they sent me a message saying i had my data plan switched and yep all good.

  16. Does this method works only for people who previously had the unlimited data plan and want to go back? Or does it work for anyone who wants to have it for the 1st time?

  17. Does this method works only for people who previously had the unlimited data plan and want to go back?

  18. In my case unlimited date plan was ununvelable when i got my iphone 4 so i did not have unlimited from the start. With out nowing this i put my sim in 2G phone want to save my phone4 working outside .After fue days i switched back to new iphone and shortly got message fro ATT that my plan was upgraded to ulimited wich was not soled from them anymore.I was very happy.

  19. I dont think it will.when u switch sim card automatily reades your phone and they or system see hwat phone u have.

  20. I dont think it will.when u switch sim card automatily reades your phone and they or system see hwat phone u have.Sorry i have only wifi ipad so i did not try.

  21. I did this and the iphone automatically activated. I typed in *DATA# but only got info about my next billing cycle and how many text messages i have left. should i have used an unactivated sim card? I used mine from a previous phone

  22. ok i tried this yesterday bought an iphone 2g off ebay got an activated sim card from att. restored phone, went throught the steps the option came up for unlimited data everything went as described. received an email that att was in the process of activating my phone. but never received anything after that.should i have placed an activated sim card back in my iphone 4. i did *data# but still says 2gb is my limit. i dont know what i should do. should i restart the whole process over? should i wait to see if att activates it? should i call them and have them activate it manually? and if i do so will they put unlimited on seeing that i have 2gb. Please help!!!!! i need this. i am so tired of being charged 20$ extra each month for going 2 gb over. please please please. i will be your best friend for life and send you cookies

      1. Thank you for that link. It helped so
Much. I had to call and talk to them. They did not want to activate it but after putting me on countless holds. The lady said that they don’t offer that plan anymore. But I kept pressing. She put me on hold and told me her manager was goin to activate it

      2. Thanks for the link Shannon. Going to give this a shot right now:) Thank the gods I kept my original iPhone:) I was jailbroken and unlocked on T-MO for a very long time until the 4G came out. Made the switch to AT&T, and the only thing I hate is not having that unlimited data package. I go over every few months:/

I will follow up to let everybody know if it worked or not.

  23. I was reading this about a week ago and since then I was so anxious to get the iPhone 2g and try this myself so I went and bought a 2g for $100 off craigslist and right away came home to try it and luckily I was one of the few that didn’t have to call att or had any problems I did the whole process and in less than 3 minutes my phone was activated and I went online to check if it really was and i confirm that this still works because I have unlimited data and txtng for $40 instead of $50 but I’ll let you know how the process goes switching to my iPhone 4 thanks a lot iDB!!

    1. So what att did is that they made a “Case” for me saying that they are going to give it to the main people and give me a response before a week and while they do that they put me in a 2 gb data plan which is hinting me that they are going to deny my case so but till then I’ll wait to see what they say

      1. So you’re having trouble transferrIng your data plan to your new phone? I just recently got my wife on the unlimited data plan with the 2g so I’ll be getting her a new phone and hopefully I’ll have an easier time doing it.

  24. Yeah so i got on borrowing a 2g. It automatically activated. There was no screen activation. So I called ATT and told them I have a 2g and I wanted to finish the activation. She saw if she could do it, and she did. From what I hear i’ts always about who you talk to get it activated. From then on, I waited 3 days and then cut my SIM card down to a micro size (super easy and fun) and wolla it worked! No idea if I HAD to wait 3 days but wanted to play it safe.

    1. Why did you trim your sim card? Couldn’t you just have gotten a new one and just transfer your data over to your new phone?

  25. ok people need help. I called at&t. like the guy in the youtube video, i called and said i was going on vacation and wanted to use my 2G, but itunes activation didn’t complete. they asked me if i could make calls/text/use data and said it was fine to use.

    ???

    1. Hi George,
Did your non iphone2g cell phone stop working? And when you look at your iPhone2g homescreen does it look normal with the exception of a “no service available” message in the top left corner? Because if if you have both then it should work. This is what happened to me: I activated my wife’s iPhone 2g through iTunes at around midnight, the phone had a message saying that it was trying to activate but nothing happened for the rest of the night and I had that message in the top left corner. Then by the next morning, my wife went to make a phone call using her go phone and she didn’t have service on that one either. When I got off work in the afternoon I took it to the At&t store and the employee said that it I had done everything right, that I had the correct screen on my phone. Then all he did was take out the sim card, put it back in and, surprise! It started working. Then he checked my wife’s account and it said unlimited data. I’m thinking maybe you didn’t activate it correctly. You can probably just get a fresh, new sim card and try it again. I think in my case I was lucky because this wonderful employee was the one who told me I could do this so he was pretty helpful( and very excited when it worked). Also, make sure that you’re not adding a new line, you’re just replacing the old one. Could you believe I was so desperate I was about to pay that Manny guy $100 bucks to do it for me!!!

  26. hi JC,

i just took the SIM out of my iphone 4 (which was working fine) and put it in an adapter and into my 2G. I had service on the 2G and could make calls and text, and use Edge data. but I i didn’t get unlimited data. and never got the confirmation email saying the phone was activated ?

will a brand new sim fix this problem ?

    1. There’s your mistake!: it has to be a brand new, never before used Sim card, just go to the AT&T store and tell them you want a sim card for your iPhone 2g so that they get you a compatible one. I didn’t have any trouble getting one because like I said, the guy at the store told me aboutthis so he was pumped to get me one but you shouldn’t have any trouble getting either. And tell them you want to activate it at home ifthey ask.

    4. Once you get on the unlimited plan, you should be able to switch back to your iPhone 4 without any problems.

  27. !!!! thank you so much !!

luckily i ordered a few from ebay last friday. should be here tomorrow !

    i was prepared !!!

    thanks !

  28. Bought an iPhone on Ebay, but it won’t sync to iTunes so I’ll try to get my money back and get another one on Ebay and try again. Does it matter if I get an unlocked or jailbroken iPhone since it has to be restored to factory settings in iTunes anyway? I’ll be using my own SIM card from my other ATT phone. Thank you.

    1. Haven’t you been paying attention!?!? You can’t use an existing sim card! You have to use a brand new one! Did you even read any of this post? The he’ll is wrong with you!?

      1. I have been paying attention and the prereqs say one unactivated or valid sim card. Some of the other posts I read in this and the original article seem to indicate that they have used their existing SIM cards before and got it to work. I’ll try getting a new SIM card from ATT and see if that helps. Does it matter that I already have an ATT account and want to use my same #, I’m not quite sure what is stored/carried on a SIM card. Thank you.

  29. It doesn’t matter, you’ll be using your old #. It’s true they say it can be the sim card from your current iPhone. I used a new one because that’s what the guy at the AT&T store told me to use and it worked just fine.

  30. JC,

are you going to be around tomorrow around 12 EST in case I run into troubles ?

    1. Yes. I’m no pro at this, I just tried it and was lucky enough to have it work. But I can check my emails ( I get alerted whenever someone posts something new).

  31. nope. had to call them and give them the IMEI and Sim Card #. they got it working. they’re trying to say the data plan is incorrect for my phone

  32. this was ALMOST not worth the hassle

i was on the phone for 4 hours, different people saying ” i have to transfer you to so-and-so and they can add the unlimited data…”

last person says “we’re sorry but this plan is expired; that’s why we don’t offer it. if your last phone had unlimited data ,we could add it, but it didn’t, we’re very sorry.

finally they gave in 🙂 and gave me a $25 credit to my account for making me wait so long 🙂

    UNLIMITED !!!!!!!!

  33. i was about ready to give up, and I was like “i chose this plan THIS MORNING on iTunes, don’t you have to honor it ?”

“………………….one moment sir; my manager said he can do it”

  34. Hello everyone, needing a little help here. Just going to give you the full scoop on my situation. I have an iPhone 4. Went out and found iPhone 2g as said in the description, did a full restore on it. Went through the iTunes activation process at about 9 o’clock last night. I received an email saying that AT&T was processing my information. However I am still able to use my phone (the iphone 2g) and when I type in *data# it shows that I still only have 2gb of data. Has this happen to anyone before? Any suggestions?

    1. George, hey man I haven’t called them yet, just got off work, but my phone has service at the top left. Did yours ever regain service before you called? I mean it’s showing my old plan when I dial *data# 2gb and unlimited txt. Should I call att with the number they emailed me (order number).

  35. Worked for me today, and I’ve figured out why.

You NEED to go down to your local corporate AT&T store and get a normal sim (non micro) that will fit in your iphone 2g. This is free and takes 2 minutes. (Tell them you are going out of town and want to use an old iphone while away) This will inactivate your micro sim from your iphone 4.

Do like it says, reboot and activate the iphone 2g in itunes. You then need to call 611 and talk to a rep and tell them to please verify that all went well with the iphone 2g and that you have unlimited data with edge. Takes 5 minutes.

No need to wait after this.

You will then need to cut your sim to become a micro sim.(Just use a pair of scissors and your old micro sim as a stencil, very simple) or buy a sim cutter. Put that sim in your iphone 4 and you will be in business.

A few minutes/hours later you will receive a text from AT&T stating that your data plan has been changed according to your phone. You now have the more expensive unlimited data plan with 3g.

    That’s it, you’re in business.

  36. One more thing, the AT&T website and *DATA# will not show that you unlimited data for a few hours. Make sure you ask a representative to verify the unlimited data plan for you. If they say you do that means you do.

  37. Daggermouth,

I went down to my store and got a SIM but DID NOT have them deactivate the micro SIM. Is this where I ran into trouble ?

    1. Daggermouth, did u try to use a microsim adaptor before you tried the method you described? And if you deactivate your micro sim, can u get your contacts put on the other sim?

    2. Daggermouth, did u try to use a microsim adaptor before you tried the method you described?

    3. Your micro sim should have automatically deactivated once the guy at the AT&T store activated the new sim. You can’t have 2 working sims for one user account.

  38. Daggermouth,
Did u try to use microsim adaptor before you tried the method you described?

    1. I didn’t use an adaptor, from what I read getting a new sim from the AT&T store is better and it worked for me.

      Using an adaptor might work.

  39. Daggermouth
Did u try to use microsim adaptor before you tried the method you described?

  40. Daggermouth,

i did what you did. except my phone showed No Service until I called them and was on the phone for 2 hours.

  41. I can confirm that this works!!! Here’s my deal… I popped my regular sized NON-iPHONE sim from my crappy nokia. iTunes recognized my phone but the activation information fields that require your name and current phone #, etc…. didn’t pop up. Phone just worked. Few minutes later got a text from At&t saying that they put me on a capped 2G data plan cause no iPhone data plan was present. Yes I got a 3G data plan put on my Edge, slow as hell iPhone. Read the July reply/response and said that a new UNACTIVATED sim card is needed. That was the key for me. Just went to local At&t store asked for an iPhone 2G sim cause my phone got destroyed and couldn’t recover sim from phone and they gladly gave me what I asked for. For FREE no less. Tried method again and wouldn’t you know it activation fields popped up. Unlimited data showed up. Only option that was allowed was SMS messaging. Key thing here is if you encounter problem is to get a new iPhone 2G some card. Popped that in the 2G and then proceed with steps. Hopes this clears any questions cause it definitely worked.

  42. Daggermouth,

it eventually worked. I convinced them to honor the plan that I selected in iTunes. shouldn’t have been that hard though. all the faq’s make it sound so much easier.

  43. i told my best friend a week ago “i’ll get unlimited data for your 3GS after I see how hard it is to do my iphone 4.

starting to think I shouldn’t bother

    1. Yes you can.. Today is 9-11-11 I got the plan to work for my sisters iPhone 4.. Took a week. Because they sent me a new sim card.. Call my friend who works for them. He got the card to work.. I did the rest..headed up to where he works after it works.. Changed the iPhone 2g sim card to the néw iPhone 4 and my sister now hAs the data plan.. Pain in the ass.. My sister wasn’t no help too.. Bitching and shit.. P.s I know more about this then my friend. That work for them.. I did all the work..

  44. Hello all. Does it matter what softaware version. Which software version on iPhone 2g worked for you guys? I have 3.1.3

  45. Hello all. Does it matter what softaware version. Which software version on iPhone 2g worked for you guys?

  46. @ george

dont give up its easier than these people are making it sound. the successful ones probably wont post at all.

    1st off you need:

    iPhone 2G
SIM Card – UNACTIVATED (NEVER USED)
    Computer (iTunes)

Start by taking your current SIM out of your iPhone 4, 3GS, or 3G and set it aside (you wont need this again)

Next take your new UNACTIVATED SIM and insert it into your iPhone 2G.

Time to connect your iPhone 2G to iTunes and activate your phone
Once you successfully tie the iPhone 2G to your account you should receive a text message from AT&T confirming it.

(Now i waited about an hour before removing the SIM Card – Optional)

The next step depends on the phone you are using.

iPhone 3G & 3GS —> Insert the SIM into the phone and wait for AT&T message stating you need a data plan and one has been selected for you. DONE.

iPhone 4 —> You need trim your full sized SIM Card down ( I personally traced the Micro SIM and cut it out with scissors) **CAREFUL** Do Not Cut Into the Metal Contacts!!

Insert the newly cut Micro SIM into your iPhone4 and you are good to go. You should receive and AT&T text message saying “Did you know you need a data plan? The proper plan has been selected”

NOTE: Do not insert the original SIM Card again! It was previously tied to the Limited Plan and may set off a red flag.

    —–
I did this one day after buying an iPhone 4 — I chose the 2GB data plan because no unlimited plan was available. Until i performed this little bypass
    —-
Now i did run into a minor difficulty (about 4 months after). I was unable to receive text messages or calls, but could send them and call just fine. It was easily fixed by calling AT&T, they asked for my IMEI and corrected the mismatch.

  47. Thanks stoney05, finally going to take the plunge and make my $400 investment. Hopefully all goes well.

  48. stoney05,

i used your method 5 days ago. my 2G was never successfully tied to my account. I had to call them to get the ball rolling. (phone showed No Service until I called them)

  49. I am not sure what version the 2G was on but I know it was old and wanted to update. I’ll check when I’m home

  50. #3282* and it will tell you which data plan you have . It’s unfortunate that we must do this to get the unlimited but it’s either attempt it or go right to sprint for their unlimited plan now that they are the only major carrier to offer it

  51. Now I have a question to ask.
Once I try this, and it works, will I be able to grandfather the unlimited data over to another smart phone?

  52. I would think this would work with an iPhone 3GS as well (ie still use the iPhone 2g to get the unlimited data, but once that step is done pop the sim into a 3GS) right? With iPhone 5 looming near I don’t think I want to shell out the cash for an iPhone 4. Would rather have the 3GS to tide me over until the iPhone 5 launches.

  53. Does this only working when going to different iPhone versions or can I use it for an Android phone as well?

  54. Worked for me!

I have an android phone, i activated an iphone 2g at 11pm, got an email telling me it was processing. Left the sim card in the iphone overnight and got a message the next morning saying it was activated. I checked online and i indeed had the $20 unlimited data plan. When i switched back to my android phone it still kept the $20 unlimited data plan! As of now its been 5 days and it still has not changed my data plan (Though online it gives me the option to switch to the $30 unlimited which it did not before)

  55. Just tried it, fresh sim. Itunes worked fine, phone wouldnt activate waiting for email. when I took it to the store, they got it working by entering new eim but it had my old data plan on it. Bah. Waste of 100$ on a 2g phone.

  56. Still works!!! I have been fooling with my sim card for the past 2 weeks…. If you have an iPhone 4 you must trim down the sim (duh) but what everyone has failed to realize is that at&t came out with newer full size sims that work on all phones from edge to 4g… Big problem is that when you trim The newer sim it doesn’t match up with original micro sim that comes with iPhone 4. So for me I activated the 2g phone then took the sim out and put it into 3GS waited and got a txt from at&t saying that they have changed me to appropriate data plan. Waited a week then went to the store and told them that I wanted to activate my iPhone 4 ( make sure that your 2g is activated and working! I called AT&T it speeds things up but this is a 2 or more day process so b patient) good luck and remember AT&T only knows what you tell them!

  57. Hi I went to AT&T and I know the rep and he’s really cool and I told him about this and he said that it will renew my contract so I’ll have to wait another 2 years for an upgrade is that true? And will this loophole stay around forever or will it be patched?

  58. Just wanna let everyone know that it still works my friend Jeohot did it last night for my plan i now have unlim Data and i just got at&t last year but it did take us 5 hours of talking to at&t to make it go thru .. thank jeohot for coming thru i owe you one bro

  59. To ron, your friend is full of shit. No doubt. Do it yourself man don’t tell everyone lol…. Btw AT&T is doing data checks in the 11th so u better hurry

    1. They are checking for tethering. I doubt this data check will mean much of anything.

  60. I have an extremely easy way to bypass talking for hours with ATT. You just have to call them once, and you also need a dumb phone (craigslist, or a $25 “gophone” works great).

    1. Call ATT and say you want to go down to a dumb phone plan (no data, keep whatever minutes and texts you want, doesn’t matter).

    2. Log into your ATT account and make sure there is no smartphone data on it. This is key. There must be NO DATA on the line.

    3. Activate the iPhone 2G. Wait till you get the email (took me 12 hours – overnight)

    4. Pop sim into your iPhone 4 (or 3G smartphone). You will get a text message that your data package has been upgraded for you. This message may also take a while (took me five hours, but was able to enjoy 3G speeds instantly).

    5. Enjoy your unlimited data.

    1. I can vouch for this i did it first with the 2gb data plan on the line and that was the plan that was still on there after the activation. So I activated an old razr phone and REMOVED the data plan-no data on the line whatsoever. Then retried the process (fully restored the iPhone 2g) and it worked! Had unlimited data. But the key is to remove the previous plan or it will override the unlimited plan that you’re trying to put on it

  61. For those that can’t get this to work or don’t want to go out and buy a 2G and go through all the hassle, I offer this through eBay (to protect both the buyer and seller) for a small fee. You would simply send me your sim and I get all of this worked out for you. If interested, reply directly to this post with your contact info, or just look up username “lordofthereef” on eBay.

    1. @lordofthereef
tried to contact you through ebay, but couldn’t. Need a few questions answered before I hit the Buy It Now. You have an email I could contact you at?

  62. I have a question. I have a 2g which i haven’t used since i bought my 3gs. Can i activate it for my child on our family plan and get unlimited data? If I’m reading this correct, I’ll need to use a NEW sim card to put in my 2g to activate right? Or can i re-activate the sim card in the 2g which hasn’t been active for a while and get a new phone number? Will i be able to get the $20 unlimited or will it bump to the $30 unlimited?

Is the key to activate the sim card to get UNLIMITED DATA USING THE IPHONE 2G?

Then when i upgrade to Iphone 5, my son can take his unlimited data sim from the 2g and plug into my old 3gs, right?

    Please explain. Thanks.

    1. In short, yes to all your questions. I would get the unlimited 3G data sooner rather than later though as they may shut down this work around any day.

  63. anyone know if this still works. I need some help with this. I am the account holder on my ATT account.would I be able to do this on my current line or would I have to add a new line and remove the one I am on now?

    1. Yes, Still works.
If your kid currently has a line, you can use his/her sim card. If not, you will need to buy a sim card. Cheapest is eBay. You can get an unactivated card shipped to your door for $2-3

  64. Eureka! Thanks for this post! My experience… -Borrowed friend’s iPhone 2g
-went to att and asked for an inactivated sim card.
-on iTunes with the sim card into the iPhone 2g restored and selected new iPhone account selected the unlimited data.
-waited 1 day with the screen msg “waiting for activation…” called the next day and had service after 15 minutes with the representative. She even told me without me asking, that I had unlimited data. :). I should have waited a day. took the sim out cut carefully to the size to fit my i4, and done. I’m new to att, never had unlimited data it wasn’t a option for me. Thank you Sebastian!

  65. Eureka! Thank to this post! My experience… -Borrowed friend’s iPhone 2g
-went to att and asked for an inactivated sim card. Got one free.
:). I shouldn’t have waited a day. took the sim out cut carefully to the size to fit my i4, and done. 66. Bingo!!!

Just completed the process to get the unlimited Data. Stopped at ATT store and asked for a new SIM for an iPhone 2g. Got home and activated via iTunes went through no problems. Waited a day to move SIM into iPhone 3g and received a text stating a new plan was needed. When I went to my account online it still showed the $20 plan when I went to change it to the $30 plan received and error. I called ATT and told them I am trying to use an iPhone 3g and the changes are not taking online. The Rep took my IMEI information and changed the plan. Go Unlimited!!!!

    1. Hey lordotfhereef I just wanted to know if u still did the service I don’t have an iPhone 2g I have an I phone 4

  67. As of 07/12/11 the loophole is still open! Proceed with confidence just need to make sure you have a unused sim for the 2g. I went to the store afterward to switch the data plan to my iphone 4 just act dumb when you go that’s the key!

  68. I tied doing this but when I plug the phone into itunes it doesnt allow me to enter in my account information when clicking on devices it just says “iphone”. any ideas???

    1. I figured out how to fix it. You need a UNACTIVATED SIM CARD. Go to a AT&T store and ask for a new UNACTIVATED SIM CARD.

  69. I just did this today, and they didn’t even bother even giving me the unlimited data for iPhone 2G, and straight away gave me the unlimited data for my iPhone 4. I Now have the option for two unlimited data plans for some strange reason? But either one works fine, and I get the option for enterprises for unlimited data as well. This worked perfectly for me. I just told them I didn’t get the unlimited data that I signed for on itunes when I activated the phone, and they fixed it without a problem!

  70. My iPhone 2g is stuck on connect to itunes screen and itunes just says iphone. It will not let me activate. Please help

      1. Not sure, did you try it with a active sim card from your current phone, or did you try it with a new unactivated sim card from at&t? Im getting a new unactivated sim card today and trying it.

    1. It does this sometimes. Keep plugging in and unplugging the phone. I do a lot of these. The highest I counted was 35 plug-ins. YES 35!

  71. I have a question on this.

I am looking into getting the new Samsung Galaxy S2 that will be coming out for AT&T. I am going to get out of my old account under someone elses name (had it for a while), and getting my own plan.

My 2 questions are pretty much this…

    1. Can I get an iPhone 2 and start this process with a new plan? I can probably get my hands on that phone and also get a new unused SIM card.

    2. If it works… can I get this plan put into the new Samsung Galaxy S2, and will the plan work for 4G service?

Thanks in advance for any replies I may get 🙂

  72. I have the same question. After you’ve activated an iPhone2g unlimited data plan, is it possible to switch it to an Android phone or are you limited to an iPhone4g?

    1. It works fine for android, I did it and switched to my ATRIX 10 minutes later and called and told them I need the smartphone unlimited plan for $30 for my ATRIX. For everyone that’s using itunes, you don’t need to, call and tell them you want to use your original iphone and need the original unlimited iphone data plan for $20. Some reps will say it not available, they’re lying, I did it 3 times because im on a family plan. If they say its not available tell them you need a supervisor.

  73. But is it going to be unlimited 3G data service if I buy the new Android phone, or will I bill able to use the 4G service available to my area?

    1. From what I’ve read so far they let you switch the unlimited plan from the 2g iphone to a 4g device.

  74. So I think I can get this to work and I’m going to try it this next weekend. But I am not sure if I’m gonna run into a problem or not. I’m going to get my plan started on sunday (Buying the Samsung Galaxy S2). This is how I was thinking of going about it:

    1. Buy the phone and sign up with AT&T with contract for discount on the Samsung Galaxy S2.
    2. Go home and take out the SIM card.
    3. Put SIM card in an iPhone 2G
    4. Finish process with iTunes.
    5. Put SIM back into Galaxy S2 and have unlimited internet.

Will it work if I do it that way? Is the SIM card that’s in the Samsung Galaxy S2 (4G capable) going to fit in the iPhone 2 to make the upgrade?

Just trying to make sure I get this right when I try it. I really don’t want to have to worry about how much data I’m using since I am on the internet all the time. Please feel free to add steps or change up my process… all help is appreciated 🙂

      1. So it’s ok to do this process with an already activated SIM card to your phone? Cause I guess I can go into the AT&T store tomorrow, sign up with them with a new plan (no data) on an old LG Shine I have, get an iPhone and switch the SIM card into it when possible. But would it activate the same way and give me the option for the unlimited plan on iTunes if the SIM has been activated? OR will I have to buy another unactivated SIM card to start fresh on the iPhone activation process?

      2. No, go to an ATT store and tell them you lost your sim card and want a replacement unactivated one. Use that with the 2g iPhone. Then call ATT or go to the store and tell them you want to upgrade your plan to a 4g device and transfer the unlimited data.

    1. 2. Go home and take out the SIM card.
      3. Put SIM card in an iPhone 2G

Get a new SIM don’t reuse the one you had in the S2.

    2. 2. Go home and take out the SIM card.
      3. Put SIM card in an iPhone 2G

Get a new SIM don’t reuse the one you had in the S2.

      1. You don’t need a new sim card. Just call 611 and tell them you wanna use your old original iphone 2g. Have them change the device over the phone and out the original unlimited iphone data plan on your account. Once done wait ten minutes call back and put your actual device back on and tell them you want the smart phone unlimited data plan for your device. Remember just like it says up above, they only know what you tell them. Don’t bring up the fact you just called ten minutes prior. They may tell you the original unlimited iphone data plan is not available. If they say its not available, tell them your using the original iphone 2g, not the iphone 3g. Then if they continue to tell you its not available, talk to a supervisor. Some customer service reps don’t have access to it, the majority do and just don’t realize your using the original iphone 2g. Tell them the original unlimited iphone data plan is the only that can be used for the original iphone because its a EDGE iphone.

    1. Does it still work am nervous ugh I don’t have a dumb phone to take out the data plan but is it hard even if I don take it out or does it still work fine ?? I have the iPhone 4 I got a new sim from the store so do I just cut the sim and when I talk to them what do I say??

  75. here i posted this a long time ago:

  76. Jarret, I am having the same problem you and another person were having. For some reason, I plug in the iphone and it just says iphone on the iTunes screen. Doesn’t do anything and doesn’t pull up any menu. How did you guys bypass this? Any way to manually pull it up? Thanks.

    1. You don’t need itunes. Just call at&t you want to use your original iphone, and you need the original unlimited iphone data plan, they may tell you its not available, then tell them its the only plan compatible with the original iphone and it is available. If they still insist its not available, either speak with a supervisor or call back they will put the plan on. Once its on call back about ten minutes later and out your actual phone back on with the smartphone unlimited data plan.

  77. I actually got it done! Finally, spent a crap load of time and some money ($30 for an iPhone 2G), but it was ALL worth it! Big thanks to everyone for helping me out here. Now just waiting for tomorrow to come so I can get my Samsung Galaxy S2.

  78. I didn’t do it over the phone though. Did it with w new SIM card and on iTunes automatically. By the way, looks like the new version of iTunes messes it up. I downloaded an older version of iTunes for it to work. Good luck to everyone.

  79. I have a funny situation…

I spent an hour on the phone with AT&T yesterday because they changed my data plan due to my “unauthorized tethering” and they won’t change it back. Each rep and supervisor just says “the unlimited plan isn’t offered so we have no way to change it back.” Can I do this iPhone 2G swap or will my account be flagged and they deny the plan?

  80. Don’t do it through them, do it through itunes. It will automatically apply. You have no choice but to get that plan when you do it on itunes. And yeah, I tried originally over the phone and I have a friend that works at At&t. Not even his manager could change it for me. So yeah, just clear your data plan, restore your iPhone 2g, and start on itunes. Get a new unactivated SIM card, it helps.

  81. You say to “clear my data plan”. Do I have to activate a dumb phone with no data, then do the iphone 2G trick? Or can I just use my iphone 3GS up until I get the SIM in the iphone 2G and get the unlimited plan through itunes?

I haven’t tried this yet, I just spent that time on the phone with at&t to try and get them to change it back on my 3GS. I’ve read through everything here and it looks like if I get an iphone 2G and brand new SIM I can do it all on my own through itunes. Does it have to be an older version of itunes?

  82. Well I did it with a dumb phone and no data plan so they wouldn’t question it. All that simply because I went through the same thing you did when I called AT&T. But you can do it either way.

As for iTunes, it didn’t work on mine with the newest version. Kept showing a iPhone sign and nothing would happen. I ende up getting an old itunes version and put it on a different computer. It worked right away. This is the site I used to get an old version of itunes:

    http://www.oldapps.com/itunes.php?old_itunes=47

It’s set for windows on a 64-bit system. You can find the right one for you on there. But I stick with 9.0.

    1. thanks man the same thing happened to me i think apple patched it if you have the latest version im going to try out what you did and ill tell you if it worked

  83. I called at&t to cancel my data plan and switch to my dumbphone that is now on file. I received a un activated sim card that im holding onto because im not sure how long I need to wait to activate my original iphone? I dont want them to see on the bill the old iphone 4 data plan that was cancelled. So if someone could please help how long should I wait? The next billing period? Or does it not matter since you activate via itunes? Thanks

  84. ive been trying this over the past few days and I am still running into problems. First what version of itunes are you using? i tried with the newest version and it didnt work. then downloaded version 9.1.1 did the restore and it gave me the option of a new account or to use a backup account, i chose the new account, but the option screen to select the data plan never came up. I am using an unactivated sim and an iphone 2g. the phone said waiting for activation. came anyone help me out?

  85. i just wanted to add that i was using a razr with the non-smartphone unlimited plan. i dont know if this would make a difference.

    1. Remove the non-smartphone unlimited plan… You need to start with no data plan on your line and with a dumb phone. I am guessing that since you have a data plan on the line, it doesn’t give you the option to add the $20 unlimited.

  86. @Noob: As soon as they take the data plan off you can do it. Just place the new SIM into the iPhone and activate on iTunes. You need to make sure that you’re iPhone 2g was restored. Here is a link on how to restore the iPhone in case you need it.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jzyy4puapig

@jk: I used 9.1.1. Are you a new customer to at&t? I just got a new account there on Thursday, but I only got my minute and messaging plan, NO DATA PLAN. Later I just restored the iPhone and then activated the iPhone. But on activation, I put that I was an existing customer.

  87. @Enrique thanks for the reply im going to try it right now already restored the phone so I just need to activate. Appreciate the help.

  88. @Enrique Is this still working as of oct 6th?

if you can please help me via. email i will pay you to walk me through this.. just need to get this
working if its still possible. i dont see a way to contact you on here.. can u post a email address?

  89. I paid $40 on eBay yesterday. The guy had it done within 30 min to an hour. Just waiting for my new sim card in the mail (that he used to make it happen). Find his auction on eBay and message him with questions. I got immediate responses through the process. His eBay name is lordofthereef.

  90. id rather do this on my own, then have someone mail me a sim card.. but thanks allstar!

  91. OH wow sorry i mis read that allstar..

im just wondering how can i do this when i want to be ready for the 4s.. and do it on a 4g now.. but im a fresh customer? what do i have to buy locally? do i really need a 2g? or can i do with with another att phone?

im a newb, but i need this Asap, hence why im even will to pay a lil bit to someone to help me through this

  92. It can only be done with an iPhone 2G. I couldn’t find one locally so I paid the guy on eBay to do it. He has amazing communication so just send him any questions through eBay.

  93. anyone know if i do this, and and use a iphone 4.. but then get in a 4s.. will i have to do the “2g” again or will the data plan just move over when i put the sim in?

  94. Once you activate the plan it will be the $20 unlimited plan, but it will switch to the $30 Smartphone unlimited plan automatically when you put the SIM card into a smartphone. I used the 2g to activate the plan, then I later bought the Samsung Galaxy S2. I am now enjoying the $30 unlimited plan on it 🙂

  95. Enrique,
Did you move the sim straight from the iphone 2G into the Galaxy S2? I thought you had to go into a 3G or 3GS as a middle step?

  96. I was able to send him a message before, during, and after the process. I messaged him back and forth a few times before making the purchase just to get some questions answered. He responded almost immediately each time.

    1. But does he call me how do I get intouch with him I paid already and I haven’t talk to him

  97. Oh. I just talked to him through ebay messages. He always responded quickly. Of course it is Friday evening now, so he may be busy. But I bet he’ll have you taken care of soon. Make sure he has the info needed.

  98. He got mine done right away. It was only about 30 minutes to an hour. He sent me a message saying it was done and I verified on my att account online. I’m just waiting for the sim card to come in the mail (he mailed me the one he used). It should be here tomorrow.

  99. Oh that’s good I paid Friday he said he’s going to do it Monday and it shows that I should receive it on the mail from 13 to 19 of the month but I have a question while I wait for my sim card is my phone going to have service I have the iPhone 4 am I going to be able to make calls and receive or do I have to wait for the sim to have service

  100. No no. I would wait for the sim card from him. If you put your sim card back in it will screw everything up. You need to wait for the sim card he sends you because that’s what is tied to the unlimited plan.

  101. Oh ok he alsO ask me to go to AT&T and show two ID’s and to tell the clerk to put a note on my account that says that I show two ID’s at the time of iPhone activation did this happen to u why do I need to do that

  102. No I gave him a few numbers that allowed him to make the change on my account. He didn’t have any issues.

    1. Can you post the ebay link or search title? Because I cant seem to find anyone who does this on ebay. Thanks

  103. @Enrique: thanks for the info. I am an existing customer. I finally got it to work but I had to call att and complain a while. They eventually got it all figured out for me. Now I just have to wait to get the 4s and see if I can get it to work.

  104. Does using this method to add unlimited text also start a new 2-year contract? I’m just wondering if doing so will screw up my upgrade cycle…

  105. No it won’t. All it does is change devices and adjust the plan according to the device. You only renew a contract when you’re buying a new phone at renewal price or accepting some other special offer.

  106. It no longer works. They caught on to it and changed the activation process on the 2g iPhone. Sorry guys if you missed it

  107. I did every line on my account and did it for a few friends also. So all my lines have unlimited data, but as of October 12 and later they changed the activation process and will not allow the activation to go through. When you call AT&T they will ask if you want the 200 mb plan or the 2 gb plan. Sorry, no more unlimited. I guess we knew at some point they would put a stop to this

  108. That’s the problem though Eric. You need to avoid calling them. I never had to call then at all. The key is to do everything by iTunes. I tried once doing it before I git mine to work and they had already gotten rid of the plan. My friend at AT&T even confirmed it. But if you avoid doing it over the phone then you’re good.

  109. I’m pretty sure it will be some time before they take they work with apple on the 2g activation process. If you restore the phone, then get the activation going, you have NO CHOICE but to take the unlimited plan.

  110. Can it be done this way too?

I have the ability to add a 10/month unlimited data plan to my “non smart phone” through my at&t account online because I have the unlimited messaging plan. If i put my sim card into an iPhone after I’ve made that change, will at&t honor the UNLIMITED part and just raise my monthly rate to 30/month?

Keep in mind that I have been with them for about 8 years now and I am also on a family plan but none of us have a data plan, just the messaging plan. Thanks for any input…..

  111. Hello, can anyone else confirm if this still works? I just tried activating a 1st gen iphone with both a new sim and a previously activated sim, but I only managed to get as far as “connect to itunes”. It doesn’t say “no service”, just simply no bars. When connecting to itunes, it is recognized, but there is only a blank page after a brief “connecting to itunes store”. No sync or restore, no activation screen, nothing. I was able to do this a month ago, I got no service then removed the sim, restarted the phone and it worked…. Can anyone help?

  112. Hello can someone help me out ,i have 3 line one with iphone 4 data and the other 2 with dumb phone .i tried a full restore on my first gen iphone on itunes did not work i use one of the sim from the dumb phone,it did activate but not a options to select unlimited ,i dial *3282# got a message saying 104.we’re sorry .requested info is currently unavailable .try again later ,check my acc online show no changes ,not sure if it work . if you can help plz reply thanks

I just wanted to make sure thanks

    1. Did you use lordofthereef? Just wondering because I used him earlier today because of previous post and good eBay feedback. Still waiting to see if he can come through for me. If not him, then who did you use?

  114. @Fabiola can it still be done on itunes if yes how ? i want to try it from ebay but not to comfortable with giving my personal information out you guys think it safe

  115. Yes he’s the one who did it I was really please with his service he dad it fast and fmg711 I know how you feel but the only info u have to give are the last 4 digits of ss and the zip code and phone number I think is easier to pay somebody than to do it ur self he has done alot I got my sim yesterday and so far everything is good I had paid a previous person in eBay and he couldnt do it so I ended up paying lordofthereef

  117. @Stamp2k1 – That won’t work. That plan is specifically designed for “dumb” phones, and the old unlimited plan was designed specifically for the iPhone and made to be upgraded as people got newer models.

In general, yes this process still works. For the people having trouble with iTunes, you may have to use an older version. I had to download iTunes 9 or something like that. I put a link out in past comments to get older versions of iTunes. Once I got the old version of it running, my iPhone 2G registered just fine. Before that I was having the same problem with just the apple showing on the screen, and no options.

ALSO: Remember you must restore the iPhone 2G to original factory settings. I posted a link on that too on a past comment.

    1. Thank You for clearing that up for me….. I would do it myself but I don’t have an original iPhone so I went with lordofthereef on eBay. It’s been over 24 hrs but he hasn’t replied to any of my messages. I know he’s reputable because of his feedback and people on this comment section. Hopefully nothing happened to the guy.

      1. Just to clear things up, I just wrote him and he quickly replied, he’s just been a busy dude.

  118. @Fabiola – this is directly from the site in case you want to check data usage on your phone.

    Check my data usage
    Check Data Usage Online
Go to the Voice & Data Usage page in my AT&T to see an itemized account of your minutes used for the current billing period. Your data usage is listed below your Minute Usage.

Check Data Usage from Your Wireless Phone
Dial *DATA# (*3282#) from your wireless device.
    Press the Send key.
A text message detailing your data usage will be sent to your phone.

If it says “out of Unlimited” then you have the unlimited data plan.

  119. I also used “lordofthereef”. He got it done very quickly after I paid on eBay and it worked. Worst part was waiting for sim card in the mail, but it all worked out.

  121. So I used a guy from eBay and it worked all good and dandy but when I put the new sim in it recognized that it was a 4s but never made the change to make the 2g unlimited to the 3G one. Now should I just called AT&T and tell them that they need to change it? I’m a heavy texter and I can’t survive with 200 texts lol please I need help! 🙁 ps the guy told me to wait until it changes on its own but it’s been a few days already it should have instantly changed ahhh. Thanks in advanced

  124. Did u use lordofthereef I try a guy before I think his name is nam something but he couldn’t do it but after I paid lordofthereef he did it in a day mail me the sim and as soon as I put it in my phone it say unlimited when I check but I have the iPhone 4 not the 4s

  125. Yeah I used nam_vu and he was able to get the unlimited but it didn’t transfer to 3G unlimited data

  126. Mine never switched to $30 Unlimited either. It’s still on $20 Unlimited. I’m fine on texts cause I’m on family plan with unlimited messaging that overrides the 200 limit. Don’t call AT&T to change it. They might not be helpful for unlimited. Do it on att.com. Sign into your account and you can make changes there.

  127. If I update my iPhone 4 to the new version that the iPhone 4s that won’t mest up the unlimited right?

  128. Hello everyone,
I just wanted to let you all know that things are backed up a little bit. I am happy to have the business but I didn’t think I would be getting 5-10 (sometimes more!) activation requests per day. As such I can’t promise instant activation as I once did. part of it is also that ATT isn’t always instant (have had to wait as long as 48 hours for things to go through). I have multiple 2G iPhones that I run these with but can still get overwhelmed at times.

Anyway, just wanted to give everyone a heads up. Trying to stock up on more units to serve my customers more!

    1. What do people do about having a phone to use when it takes 48 hours for the phone to activate? I want to do this for a friend (I have a 2G to use and he currently has an iphone 4s that is activated). If I try to activate the 2g on his account with a new sim, his 4s will be useless until the 2g is activated with the new sim (and the unlimited plan) and I can give him that new sim. Is there any way around this? I only have one 2g and I’d like to be able to do this for him and other people as well but if it’s going to take 48 hours to activate the 2g with the new sim, I don’t think people are going to be very happy waiting for the activation process to go through.

      1. It was done on my phone 2 days ago and the entire process took 15 minutes and that included me calling AT&T to activate my new sim card because I had lordofthereef do it for me on eBay and I didn’t want to wait for him to mail me the sim he used.

      2. It’s a crap shoot. Sometimes an AT&T generates an email along the lines of “you activation is processing”. Other times you (the contract holder) will be required to call AT&T up to “push” the activation. In this scenario they also may require going to an AT&T store and showing ID. Lastly, it may be instant. Truly is tough to say.

  129. No Fabiola, it won’t mess it up. I went from an LG Shine to a Samsung Galaxy S2 and my unlimited plan stayed.

  130. Just an update on lordofthereef…… He was right on the money with his communication. He was backed up and filled me in on when he could get to me and came through flawless….. On a side note, I didn’t want to wait for him to mail me his updated Sim Card so I had an Unregistered one waiting that I got on eBay for $1.39 incl shipping. Once he did his thing and updated my account info I could see it immediately on my AT&T account, I called AT&T and told them I needed to activate a sim card for my iPhone and no questions asked they activated it immediately. It literally took 15 minutes and the iPhone is up and running with unlimited data….. So excited.

    1. “thegizmotrader” is the name of the seller that is selling those unregistered AT&T sim cards….

  131. Someone pleaseeee Help meeee, I had already jailbroken my phone but I restored it and now I need to activate it with a new sim card but when I plug in my iphone 2 into itunes it recognizes the phone but no “lets get started screen” is there, but only a screen that says iPhone on it… PLEASE HELP

  132. Hi,
I have an iphone 4S. Can I use a micro sim adapter to activate the iphone 2G with that sim or I really have to get a new sim ?

  133. Why can’t I view the older comments. I am trying to find Manny’s contact information, I have been following this blog for a while and was able to do the hack with a 2g iPhone back in February, but since then i sold my 2g.. Just wondering if Manny is still around. I got some business for him if he is.

    1. Look just below this post and to the left or it is also located at the top of the page in small blue letter it says “older posts” with a little blue arrow. You might have to click back a few pages to find the posts you are looking for but you should be able to go all the way back to the first page of posts….

  134. Sal,
It will only work with a new sim card. If you try it with a currently active sim card the system will override it and put you on the limited data plan and you’re stuck back at square one.

  135. AllstarE4

Is there another way to do this if you just activated an iPhone 4S to get the unlimited Data Plan?

    1. @Andy….. In order to do this you have to eliminate your existing DATA plan. For that to happen, you have to put your Sim Card into a phone that does not require a Data Plan aka. a Dumb Phone. But because the iPhone 4s uses a Micro Sim you should get an adapter that allows it to fit into the Dumb Phone. When you switch your Sim to a DUMB PHONE, you can go into your AT&T account and eliminate your data plan. Once you don’t have the DATA Plan, then you can put your Sim into the iPhone 2g and activate it through iTunes (You might have to use an earlier version like 9.0) with your AT&T account information. In iTunes it allows you to select the $20/Month Unlimited Data plan because it detects the iPhone 2g. After you get your account info set up you can take your Sim Card and put it into your iPhone 4s……. You will need the original iPhone to do this though. If you don’t have one it might be easier to get an UNREGISTERED MICRO SIM CARD and have lordofthereef on eBay do it for you. He did it for me and it took no more than 15 minutes. If you have any questions, just ask. He was professional throughout the entire process…… Good Luck.

  136. There is no other way to do it. The process is the same no matter what phone you want to use in the end. You have to temporarily use a dumb phone, take off data plan, then do the iphone 2G trick. Once those steps are done you put that new sim in the iphone 4S and you’re good to go.

  137. Just a quick note guys,

I am all caught up so delays, if any, should be MUCH shorter, so take a look at my eBay page! 😉

Thanks again for all the kind words and references. Keep enjoying that unlimited data!

  138. I also just quickly wanted to add a few notes, since some buyers tend to get eager, worried (or I like to say plain impatient).

This is not my sole means of income. I am a student and I also work 30 hours a week. If I don’t get to working on your account the instant you pay, PLEASE BE PATIENT. Just like you, I have a life.

If you want up-to-the-minute updates on your account, just log in at att.com and check if the data plan is on the line(s) in question. If not, it’s still processing. No need to ask me. When I have 10+ activations pending, it is a lot easier to have each buyer check THEIR OWN status than me keep checking for them. (Hint: I am notified when things are complete, so you will get a message from me when they are done as well).

I provide a google voice TEXTING number as a courtesy to my buyers. Messages are forwarded to my mobile and I try and respond as quickly as possible (generally instantly unless you are texting me at some ungodly hour – which some people have around 3am). I am unable to take voice calls. I do not have the time. It’s as simple as that.

If you are worried about being without a phone for any amount of time, go grab a $10 gophone from Best Buy. It’s a Samsung flip phone, and it really is a good option. I will not be able to expedite your order simply because “you need the phone for business” or any other reasons. If you need it that bad, pay the extra $10 for the phone. Unless I get a massive number of orders, I am generally able to get you taken care of the same day. Please also be aware that sometimes ATT call centers, servers, etc. undergo maintenance and can be down for some period of time.

If there are any questions, reach me through TEXT at my google voice (515) nine8one sixty-eight twenty-six or message me through eBay (seller lordofthereef).

  139. Okay, I went to AT&T store, opened a line without contract (just voice service). I have an iPhone 2G, inserted new Sim Card, plugged it into iTunes 9.0 and went through the activation. The last step where iTunes was communicating with AT&T, there was an error and it said something about No Network Connection and now iTunes just says iPhone when the phone is plugged in. AT&T says it’s activated but the phone still asking me to plug it into iTunes. When I do it says “We could not complete your iTunes Store request. The network connection timed out…” Can someone help me?

    1. I could have written this post because the SAME thing just happened to me!

Trying to google some answers…. If anyone knows of anything I could try, please post…

      1. Are you guys actually wanting to use the 2G? I had someone ask me about this. If so, just “hacktivate” it (google it, easier than explaining here). If not, and the data plan is on your account, there really is no reason to even worry about it. It seems like iTunes isn’t activating the phones, but if they are activating the data that is the only step that really matters (in my eyes anyway)

      2. I went to Apple store today and they told me that the iPhone 2g can’t be activated FOR USE over itunes, but instead, they have to take all the phones information and send it to corporate and corporate will activate the phone in 48 hour of submitting the phones information. I asked them will it be activated over the air or plugging into iTunes. The LEAD GENIUS told me he didn’t know. He just knows corporate activates the phones.

  140. I have been reading this for a few days. I cannot get this to work. I have put itunes 9.0, 10.5 and 10.3 on my pc.I’m currently on 9. The iphone was jailbroken so I restored immediately. When I put in an unactivated sim card (or mine) it goes straight to the screen on the iphone to unlock. It doesn’t ask me to go through the iphone att set up process. I have tried on 2 computers and I can’t seem to get it. It asks if I want to sync, but nothing about setting it up on Att. Could this be because it is unlocked? I have done a DFU restore and a regular restore at least 15 times each. Just want this to work haha. Thanks in advance.

  141. Another word on respect here guys,
I provided my number for those who wish to buy my service, not as a 24/7 help line. I am happy to answer questions when I am browsing forums here, but I am not going to be open for questions about how to do this yourself 24/7. I had been answering these hoping they wouldn’t be frequent, but this morning I got my 5th person in two days just asking me to walk them through this. I am simply going to stop answering such inquiries.

  142. I have an iphone 4s but I don’t have unlimited data right now. A friend with an iphone 2g is going to do this for me but I have a few questions. Once he does what he has to do, how do I get a new sim from att? If I just walk into an att store, will they just give me a new micro sim if I ask for it? Won’t they ask why I need it? If not, are they going to ask me to give them my 4s so that they can activate the micro sim with it? Unfortunately, my friend doesn’t live close to me so getting the sim card from him isn’t possible. Basically I want to know what I need to do on my end once my friend activates the 2g on my account. I know I need a new sim but I want to know how to get it from at&t and activate it properly so that I get unlimited data on my 4s. Thank you.

    1. You can buy an Un-activated sim card off of eBay first. You can buy a regular sim card from gizmotrader for $1.24 free shipping and cut it down to fit or you can pay a little extra and buy an Un-activated micro sim card from other sellers. Before your friend does anything, YOU need to take your activated sim card and put it into a phone that does not require a data plan and go into your account on AT&T and take off the DATA Plan, this way when your friend does his thing and enters your account info it doesn’t show an existing data plan. Once your friend does his thing and he’s able to change your account settings to the $20/month Unlimited data plan, you can call AT&T with your Un-Activated sim card and tell them you want to activate it for your phone. I did mine this way and it took a total of 15 mins. from start to finish and my phone was fully activated. I told them I scratched my sim removing it from my phone and they didn’t ask any questions.

      Any questions, just ask…..

  143. Well we didn’t do the part about taking off the data plan but my friend told me that he had no problem selecting the unlimited data plan when he tried to activate the 2g in itunes; however, now he’s stuck on a screen that says “”Please wait while AT&T is processing your activation. This make take up to 3 minutes.”

  144. I spent all weekend trying this: had 2g iPhone, downloaded iTunes 9, got a new sim card from AT&T and had NO LUCK! It kep telling me I had a problem with my “Network”!

Went to Apple Store; I stumped the Geniuses! They tried with a new sim card and had me go back to AT&T. You know…Pass the Buck!

AT&T tried two new sim cards, saw the $20/mo. data plan on my account. They said the problem was with iTunes not letting the last activation step go forward! Both AT&T salesmen told me I should Jailbreak it; check you-tube for easy instructions.

I’m thinking iTunes is blocking people from activating any new accounts for iPhone 2G. Very frustrating g!

  145. Let me clear a few things up.

    1. This can be used with the latest version of iTunes. No need to downgrade. I use the latest version just fine

    2. If the $20 unlimited data plan is on your account, it is irrelevant whether you get the iPhone 2G actually activated or not. The goal here is just to get the plan on your line. If you are planning on actually using the 2G you will have to “hactivate” it (use a Google search) as of this writing. Apple is no longer activating 2G phones for whatever reason (this may change again in the future, I cannot say)

    3. If you are getting a “blank iPhone” screen, this seems to be a problem with iTunes connectivity. Try rebooting your computer, unplugging and replugging your iPhone cable, or using a different computer if possible. It will eventually work.

For those who do not want to go through the trouble, I do offer this service via eBay at an affordable price.

  146. @lordofthereef:

Do you have to hactivate the 2g in order to activate the phone in itunes and add the unlimited data plan? Or do you only have to go through the process in itunes until it gets to the Processing Activation screen? Like I mentioned, my friend got stuck at the activation screen and it just stayed there until it timed out and the unlimited plan was never added to my account. Is he missing a step somewhere or messing it up somehow?

    1. A “hacktivated” phone will not get you to the activations screen. It needs to be restored and in the “plug into itunes” screen. I am not sure what happened with your friend’s line, but something else went wrong.

  147. @trent @lordofthereef

I got stuck at the same point trying to do this. I restored the 2g before I started, inserted a brand-new unactivated sim and then went through the steps (entering all of the required info, selecting the unlimited plan, etc.). Everything went smoothly until that last screen where it tells you to wait 3 minutes or whatever. It eventually timed out with a message saying:

“We could not complete your iTunes store request. The network connection was lost. There was an error in the iTunes store. Please try again later.”

Could this have anything to do with the itunes account? If I’m doing this for someone else, is it ok to be signed into my own itunes account and have my email address as the one that receives the activation emails? That’s the only thing I haven’t really seen mentioned but I can’t imagine that I would need my friend’s apple id and password.

  148. Looks like my comment is waiting for moderation since I put a link in it. Look for my seller name “lordofthereef” on ebay. Or search, in ebay, “AT&T ATT Unlimited Data Plan – Smart Phone Only”

  149. I can add unlimited data for u as I have the supplies, reach me @ (520) 329-1689 TEXT ONLY! i do it cheaper than ebay

  150. for those that are confortable going outside of ebay im am happy to do that as well for a lesser fee again i am reachable at (515) 981-6826

    again, text only

  151. What is the difference between the $20 plan and $30 plan? We already have the unlimited messaging on our family plan so do we need to upgrade the one iPhone to the $30 plan? Thanks in advance for your help.

  152. When I plug in the iPhone iTunes comes up with a blank page that simply says iPhone. Any ideas how to get to an activation page?

    1. I don’t know if there’s a definitive way to get the activate screen to show. It is off and on for me. Sometimes I open iTunes and plug my phone in with it off and sometimes with the phone on. You may have to restart the program a few times or reboot you computer to get the activation screen. Keep trying different ways and you’ll get it. Good Luck!

  153. I got an iPhone off ebay, called att with a dumb phone and had them remove my smartphone plan. I logged in to check and it was indeed gone. Next, I put my sim in the iPhone and activated it through iTunes. It didn’t activate at first, so I installed the whited00r custom rom and it was good to go. Again, I checked the att webpage and it said I now had the $20/unlimited plan. I then took the sim out of my iPhone and put it in my Captivate. I never got a text saying I was upgraded to the $30 plan, so I checked the website again and it says I now have the $20/unlimited iPhone plan AND the $25 2GB smartphone plan. What can I do to fix this and get the $30 plan? Please help!

  154. I pretty much end up with the same thing, did you get a chance to call them and clear it up?

    1. When you log into your AT&T account does it still show that you have the iPhone or does it show your dumb phone? If it still shows your iPhone you should be able to switch it by hitting the part that says “This is not my phone”. Maybe if you do that, then you can take off the data plan. If AT&T is asking for your IMIE number, I think they just want to verify that your sim is actually in a dumb phone. Just guessing though.

  155. anyone else getting the “Additional information required to activate your iPhone” email now? all the time?

  156. It seems to be working, but you’ll need to upgrade from the $20 unlimited to the $30 unlimited. AT&T will automatically do that for you if you don’t.

  157. Prices have dropped some on eBay. Mention you found out about my service from here and receive an additional $5 off!

  158. Is there anyway to tell if the 2g phone you have is activated or not before you start ?..and if so how do you deactivate it seems like if you know this it would take care of some of the problems. I’m going to be setting up 2 phones on unlimited so when I do the first phone and put the sim card in the 4g that should deactivatethe 2g again to set up number 2 phone ?

    1. Whether it is activated or not is irrelevant. Just do a restore in iTunes. That way you will KNOW it is not longer activated by seeing the “plug into itunes” message.

  159. I can do this process for anyone thats looking to get it, and doesent wanna have to worry about doing this themselves

Text only please. It is the best way to reach me: Text anytime day or night. My names Jay:

    716-771-2545

Thanks & look forward to hearing from you.

  160. I can confirm this still works as of December 1, 2011. My step-by-step experience is in the comment section of the original post (linked above) from October 2010. Sort the comments by “Newest first” to find it.

  161. This works as of December 4th. Went to LordOfTheReef’s eBay listing and he took care of two lines for me in under an hour with little work on my part. If you can’t do this on your own, it’s definitely worth it to find him on eBay.

    1. Thanks JBK. I hope you are enjoying the data!

For those willing to go outside of eBay we can go cheaper since we are omitting the moddle man who charges me an arm and a leg in listing/selling fees.

      515-981-6826

  162. Hello All,

THANK YOU FOR SUCH AN AMAZING GUIDE. I follow all these steps as described above. I went through a lot of struggles. I was ready to give up but at the end worked. I got UNLIMITED that is all it matters. In my case, I used an Unactivated sim card that i got from ATT store. The iphone 2g never got unlocked but I completed the activation process succesfully.

    Thank you again,

  163. Ok, I’ve been trying to get the $30 unlimited iphone plan on my account! Here’s the issue I can’t activate through itunes because my iphone 2g is broken, and won’t restore for the life of me. So, I called AT&T gave them imei number and they added the iPhone 2G to my account, but said they can’t manually add the data plan, and that I must go through iTunes. Every single representative, including the supervisors, keep telling me either they don’t offer the plan, they can’t add it on manually, or the only way to add it is through iTunes, I don’t know what to do. So far all I have is the iphone 2g on one of my lines without a data plan..

I always make note that original unlimited iphone data plan is the only plan that can be used for the original iphone because its a EDGE iphone, and some keeping saying that the other data packages 200mb, 2g, work with the phone.

I don’t know what to do at this point….

  164. I successfully was switched from the $20 to the $30 plan the other day.

When I check my account on my iphone, my current data plan states “Data Unlimited for iphone” then selecting I get this, “Data Plan for Iphone, Automatically added for customers using iPhone without required plan.

I have the option of actually selecting an official $30 plan. Should I do it and select the official $30 plan, or should I just leave it alone as is and it will change on its own when my billing cycle starts over in a couple of weeks?

  165. lordofthereef,
Do you know when your ebay iPhone unlimited plan will be available again on ebay?

    1. I do not know if/when ATT issues get resolved. Currently I am being told by ATT reps that “problems” should be resolved within 48 hours. Whether this is a legitimate outage or ATT closing the loophole, I literally have no way to know without letting some time pass.

  166. I’ve never had a data plan with Att and currently have a family plan with 3 phones so I have some questions:

    1. If I do this will it force me into a contract with ATT?
    2. Will I be able to upgrade to a new smart phone other than an Iphone?

I was planning on getting a new smartphone with a data plan but want the unlimited should I order the new phone first then do this or do this then order the new phone with ATT to get the discounted rate?

    1. 1. No
      2. Yes

This is IF ATT brings back activations. They have been down since the morning of 12/13/11

      1. So right now I should hold off on trying this until we know if ATT has allowed activations again and it works? I haven’t been able to find an Iphone in my area either and I know most people want your entire account info to get you unlimited data which I’m not too comfortable giving.

  167. Ebay wants like $135 for the phones but there are some for $50 but they say they don’t work for sending/recieving calls or texts. Does the phone actually have to be fully functional like that or just be able to connect to Itunes to get the unlimited data option?

    1. lordofthereef reported that activations are down I dunno if that is activations through itunes or what. I was wondering the same thing if he was basically saying it’s been shutdown for now. Maybe it was maintanence? I hope it doesn’t effect the loophole.

    1. Currently it is not. As I said, when it’s back, I WILL UPDATE here. If you see no updates, that means it’s not back yet. ATT reps still giving me the run around so I have no confirmation whether or not this is 100% officially closed or not.

      1. Dang I found this too late…. I am already grandfathered in on the unlimited but I converted to a family plan and added a line to give my brother a phone for X-mas, was trying to figure a way to get him unlimited plan as well. As I left iPhone for the new S2 skyrocket.

  168. i think this the end of it GET AT&T UNLIMITED PLAN BACK….i try everything with iTunes, call At&t & go in store At&t rep also can’t do it system won’t let them do……if anyone als have any info pls post…thank you

  169. is there a particular version on itunes ot be used ??
i tried ur procedure but moment i put my sim card, it automatically gets activated without itunes.

    1. yes At&t do have iPhone 2g sim card you can order online free at&t.com or go to at&t store get for free..
you can use microSIM with microSIM adapter in iPhone 2g then use same sim card in iphone 3g or 4…

  170. This is down. For good. Game Over. Was awesome while it lasted. Happy to have helped so many community members.

I have a friend who does FAN discounts. He can do 28% if there is interest. You all know where to find me.

      1. On your monthly bill. That is what a FAN discount is. Google search works miracles, friend! I am told it may cure cancer! 😉

      2. Text me… 5159816826… it’s plastered all over this thread/

All you guys have to do is look for it in this thread.

    1. If your friend is willing to add the discount that’d be great. My email is skaragias at gmail d0t c0m.

I went out and bought an iPhone 2g, but it didn’t work. It just activated. I wish I would have read the comments first. Maybe update the article to inform other community members?

Oh well. It was only $40. Hope AT&T brings back unlimited data again.

  171. Damn, I went and bought an iPhone1,1 just for this process and when the wife’s usage got too high. Unfortunately, I guess I waited too long… Oh well… Should have just made her do it! 🙂

  172. I tried this with different versions of iTunes with different firmwares, unactivated sim card, and a dfu restore each time. The iPhone 2G always activates automatically with no option in iTunes for a data plan.
Hope this answers a lot of peoples questions.

  173. Anyone know if this is still working? I currently have an iPhone 4S and am on the 200MB monthly data plan and would LOVE to get the unlimited data plan for $30/month!

    1. It is not… the last dozen or so posts are people stating this. Nobody reads threads anymore…

      1. I saw the comments after I posted but I didn’t realize the comments were organized from oldest to newest. Do u know of anyway to get unlimited 3G still? Pretty much willing to do anything…lol. I would switch to Sprint but it’s too late…

  174. Itunes does not give me the option to register! 🙁 I did a fresh restore

  175. Great stuff! My question is … what about just the voice part of the plan??? i.e., can I get a NEW cell plan with an iphone 2g???
A friend recently upgraded, and she gave me her old iphone 2g. I already have an iphone 4 on AT&T, so I want to give my recently-inherited iphone 2g to my Dad and add set up a family plan on my existing account, but … my concern is that since all the voice plans are now 3g and 4g, will AT&T let me set up a new voice account w/the 2g phone and network? or will this iphone 2g work on the 3g voice network???
    Any info would be great!
    Thanks!

  176. We still are using the iphone 2g on the original unlimited plan, just never got around to buying or upgrading the phone. If I put this sim in a current phone will it be grandfathered since it’s an active unlimited account even though ATT has closed off new 2g activations?

  178. If you add a new line to existing family plan with this method, it will be no two year contract? What I’m thinking is activate an iphone 2g unlimited then upgrade it to 4s… any comment would be appreciated~!

  179. Is there any possible loophole to still get unlimited data??
    iPhone 4S at&t 2g Data Plan (Un-Grandfathered)

  180. Hi there, I hope this isn’t too late… I used to have the unlimited on my iPhone 2G, but I cancelled it and went with another carrier. However, I still have the iPhone 2G and I’ve been trying so hard to get the unlimited plan again. Do you think it would still work?

  181. Can you restore the first generation iPad 3G and get unlimited data back?

  182. I activated iphone 2g using 4g LTE SIM card, restored from iTunes and before getting connect to iTunes screen I inserted my activated 4g LTE SIM card into 2g phone. It was activated but when I checked data it remains the same my current limited data plan. Nothing changes to unlimited plan. Why? And how should I do next?

  183. does this method work for iPhone 5s also does it just apply to the iPhone that your wanting to us or does it apply to all the phones that is on a current plan that you and your family are on
