Forgot to Lock the Door of Your House? There’s an App for That

Lockitron is a solution that combines hardware and software to give you wireless control of your home’s deadbolts. In fact, you can control the locks on your doors from anywhere in the world.

Using a Lockitron Self-install kit and compatible phone software, you can unlock your door with the tap of a button. We’ve seen wireless unlock solutions for the car before, but not for the home…

You can get a Lockitron deadbolt, door knob, or door handle. The system works by using the iPhone application to send a signal to Lockitron servers. The servers relay that signal to a small device that plugs into your internet router.

From there, it talks to your door by telling it to lock, or unlock. You can even share “virtual keys” with friends and family. Forgot whether or not you locked the door before you left this morning? Use Lockitron to make sure your house is safe.

Throwing a party? Send out a temporary key to guests in a text message, and they can let themselves in. Lockitron doesn’t use Wi-Fi, the electronic lock is tied to the plug-in server via an ethernet cable. There is also support for NFC.

While this would be extremely convenient, it’s also extremely expensive. The cost runs between $300 and $500 for a Lockitron kit. I also don’t know how safe door locks that are connected to the internet are.

What do you think? Would you use wireless locks for your house?
