How to enable the hidden Topography view in Google’s Maps app

By Jeff Benjamin on Dec 26, 2012

Ryan Petrich is back at it again, this time with a new jailbreak tweak that enables a hidden Topography mode found in the recently released Google Maps app. The tweak, available via Cydia on his beta repo, adds a fourth option to the sidebar featured within Google maps to easily enable Topography.

As it turns out, the Topography Mode enabled via this tweak was already built into the Google Maps app from the get go. Why Google decided to keep the feature disabled in the public release is anyone’s guess, but if you install this tweak, you can easily enable the option.

This jailbreak tweak allows you to fake certain statistics on your iPhone

By Jeff Benjamin on Dec 21, 2012

I’ve been known to give jailbreak developers a pass when it comes to developing what many deem as “worthless” tweaks, because I know that there is always someone who will find a tweak to be useful. The latest such item to teeter upon this fine line is Fake iOS 6 About — a jailbreak tweak that allows you to fake statistical information about your device.

If you’ve ever wanted to pretend that your device could hold a million songs, or that you reside on a carrier not available in your country, then Fake iOS 6 About is the tweak for you. In most cases, many will feel that such a tweak is worthless. I’ll be totally honest with you; this time, it’s hard not to agree with those sentiments. Read More

‘Download To Newsstand’ makes it easier to identify pending downloads

By Jeff Benjamin on Dec 21, 2012

It’s always great to open up the App Store and find a dozen new app updates waiting for download, but downloading so many items at once presents a small issue. If you’re like me and you have a ton of apps scattered around four or five pages in multiple folders, then it can be tedious to locate each app to check its download progress.

Download To Newsstand is a recently released jailbreak tweak that attempts to address this. It moves all pending downloads into the Newsstand folder for an easy to see centralized location for all pending downloads. Read More

Auxo completely reinvigorates the iOS app switcher

By Jeff Benjamin on Dec 20, 2012

Back in October we posted a tidbit on an iOS app switcher concept that was making waves across the Internet. Initially posted on The Verge forums, designer @Sentry_NC‘s concept was met with approval by many, including readers here on iDB.

A lot of times, though, these sorts of things never go anywhere. Concept photos and videos are nice, but rarely do they evolve into anything more than that. Well, I’m happy to tell you that Sentry’s concept hasn’t followed the status quo in this regard. Bent on making his concept a reality, he collaborated with developers, Jack Willis, and JamieD360, to bring the idea to fruition.

We’ve been fortunate enough to gain access to the final build of the real live working tweak. Auxo is its name, and changing the stock iOS app switcher for the better is the game… Read More

Nito Installer allows you to easily install nitoTV and XBMC on a jailbroken Apple TV

By Jeff Benjamin on Dec 17, 2012

Thanks to the folks over at FireCore, both jailbreaking and installing useful jailbreak apps on an Apple TV 2 is about as easy as it gets. FireCore’s jailbreak tool — Seas0npass — is incredibly simple, and it’s free.

Likewise, FireCore’s application package — aTV Flash (black) — is extremely simple as well, though there is a charge associated with using it. Pretty much everything that you can install using aTV flash (black) can be accomplished on your own with a bit of know how, but its simplicity makes the package worth the money.

Now Kevin Bradley, better known in hacking circles as nitoTV, has created his own easy to use installer, appropriately called, nito Installer. Unlike aTV flash (black), his version is free and runs directly on an iOS device like the iPhone or iPad.

Want to see how it works? Take a look inside as we take nito Installer for a spin… Read More

As we always strive to do, we’ve taken it upon ourselves to jailbreak iOS 6.1 beta 4 as a confirmation that it can be done. Inside, we’ll show you the exact steps that you need to take in order to do the same on your qualifying iOS 6 beta 4 device. Read More

‘MapsOpener’ makes Google Maps the default Maps app on iOS

By Jeff Benjamin on Dec 14, 2012

Google Maps is back on iOS, but there’s just one problem — Apple’s stock maps app still remains default, so all of your maps links will open in Apple’s version instead of Google’s.

Thankfully, we knew it was only a matter of time before a jailbreak solution appeared to skirt around this issue. That solution is called MapsOpener — a brand new jailbreak tweak that forces maps links to open up in Google Maps… Read More

How to improve the look of Google Maps on a jailbroken iPad

By Jeff Benjamin on Dec 13, 2012

Last night, Google released its new version of iOS maps to much fanfare, but sadly, iPad owners were left without a version designed for the larger display.

True, you can always run Google Maps in 2x mode on the iPad, but truth to be told, it looks hideous when doing so. Thankfully, one of our favorite jailbreak tweaks for the iPad always seems to come to the rescue when there’s a big iPhone only release.

RetinaPad, a tweak by Ryan Petrich that we’ve covered extensively in the past, allows you to run Google Maps, and any other iPhone app for that matter, using the 2x mode assets included with the app. This not only provides a full screen experience, but significantly improved visuals in full screen as well… Read More

As expected, the Dream JB is a fake – updated

By Jeff Benjamin on Dec 12, 2012

Okay, I’ll bite. Again.

Yesterday I called out the developer of “Dream JB” for promising to bring a jailbreak to the iPhone 5 when he knew good and well that he couldn’t fulfill that promise.

Understandably, a lot of readers were miffed that I had the audacity to dash their hopes for a jailbreak. We’ve waited a long time for a jailbreak for iOS 6 and the iPhone 5, so it didn’t really surprise me when I was labeled a pessimist, although I was surprised a bit that my journalistic integrity was questioned. Fair enough, I was pretty positive that in due time this “jailbreak” would be exposed for what it really was.

Due time came today.

As I stated, I too wish for a jailbreak, it’s in my best interest to have one…but I and many others saw through this for what it was — a fake. Now the developer has released a video showcasing his fake work. And although it’s a pretty ambitious job of fakery, at the end of the day it’s still fake. Read More

Reports of an iPhone 5 jailbreak releasing on December 22nd are probably fake – updated

By Jeff Benjamin on Dec 11, 2012

Over the last few weeks there’s been a slight buzz about a so-called iPhone 5 jailbreak from some unknown and unproven entity. So as not to draw attention to the folks behind what is almost assuredly a hoax, we’ll refrain from linking or name dropping.

The bottom line is this, if you don’t see word from a respectable member of the community, a member from proven teams like the Chronic Dev Team or the iPhone Dev Team, then it’s almost always fake. Please don’t get hyped up over something that isn’t real, only to be highly disappointed in a few weeks… Read More

Binary Clock replaces your iPhone’s stock Lock screen clock

By Jeff Benjamin on Dec 11, 2012

Binary Clock is a new jailbreak tweak that outright replaces the stock Lock screen clock on an iOS device. The tweak features over a dozen different themes of various colors or shapes, along with the ability to hide or show the Lock screen date string.

Obviously, you’ll need to know how to tell time in binary, unless your plan is to simply stare aimlessly at the pretty flashing lights. Don’t worry, inside I’ll not only showcase this awesome tweak, but I’ll also teach you how to tell time in binary in less than a couple of minutes. Read More

Chpwn releases rebuilt Infiniapps with iOS 6 support

By Cody Lee on Dec 10, 2012

The Infiniapps are some of the most popular tweaks on the jailbreak scene. There’s Infinidock, which lets you add more icons to your iOS dock, Infinifolders, which does the same thing for folders, and Infiniboard, which adds vertical scrolling to your Springboard.

If you’re a fan of the trio, you’ll be happy to know that Chpwn has recently updated all three of them to support iOS 6. In fact, he’s completely rebuilt them from the ground up to eradicate long-standing bugs, and improve the stability and performance of the tweaks… Read More

HUD Pro adds additional options to the iPhone’s volume HUD

By Jeff Benjamin on Dec 10, 2012

Looking to add some additional functionality to the iPhone’s volume HUD? If so, then you might want to take a look at HUD Pro — a new jailbreak tweak available on Cydia’s MacCiti repo.

At $1.50, I feel HUD Pro is a bit pricey for what it offers. It features things that venture more toward the gimmicky side than actually being useful, but perhaps this video will make it easier for you to decide on that… Read More

How to easily adjust brightness on iPhone and iPod touch with BrightVol

By Jeff Benjamin on Dec 10, 2012

BrightVol is a new jailbreak tweak, which allows you to adjust the brightness settings of an iPhone or iPod touch using the device’s hardware volume buttons.

While similar tweaks have been created in the past, none of them, to my knowledge, allows you to dynamically switch between brightness settings and traditional volume settings as easy. BrightVol allows you to do just that, and that’s what really separates it from the rest of the pack. Take a look inside for our full video walkthrough… Read More

3 reasons why jailbreaking is waning in popularity

By Jeff Benjamin on Dec 6, 2012

It’s no secret — jailbreaking just isn’t as popular as it once was. In fact, in the past 10 days or so, only a couple of jailbreak tweaks have been released that were worth noting.

For such a strong community, we’re beginning to enter unprecedented territory. If you take an in-depth look at the current situation, a few obvious reasons stand out as to why jailbreaking is on a downturn.

Take a look inside, as I’ve compiled 3 reasons as to why jailbreaking is declining in popularity… Read More

Attachments+ for Mail adds powerful options to the stock Mail app

By Jeff Benjamin on Dec 4, 2012

Attachments+ for Mail is a new jailbreak tweak that modifies iOS’s stock Mail app to be able to handle a wide array of attachments. It integrates directly with libfinder to provide an iFile-like interface to peruse iOS’ native file structure.

Attachments+ for Mail allows you to attach files of any type directly from the file system by means of the copy and paste menu. The ability to preview files, attach multiple files, and compress files prior to attaching, is also present. Check out our full video walkthrough of the tweak in action inside… Read More

How to jailbreak iOS 6.1 beta 3

By Jeff Benjamin on Dec 3, 2012

iOS 6.1 beta 3 has been released to developers, and as we always do, we show you how to jailbreak it. This jailbreak is a tethered jailbreak, and works with pre-A5 devices like the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, or iPod touch 4th gen. It also should be reiterated that the jailbreak is for developers only.

Take a look inside as we showcase on video how to jailbreak iOS 6.1 beta 3. Read More

Weblin — yet another “Cydia alternative”

By Jeff Benjamin on Dec 2, 2012

First, let me just say that this rant isn’t strictly about Weblin. It’s about any such service — past or future. Please read this before trying to create the next Cydia alternative.

I speak totally for myself when I say this, but I’m sick and tired of these so-called Cydia alternatives. They are usually slow, unresponsive, and serve no real purpose. Not only that, but they potentially leave you at risk security wise, and their legality falls somewhere in a grey area.

Weblin is yet the latest such “alternative”. Now this review isn’t meant to be harsh. Okay, who am I kidding, it is meant to be harsh, but it’s in no way trying to disrespect an obviously talented developer behind the project. The problem is that these alternatives serve no purpose. They don’t do anything that Cydia doesn’t already do 100 times better, and for that reason they are pointless to me.

You’ll see what I mean inside. Take a look as I take Weblin for a spin on video… Read More

‘ImmediateSend’ allows you to quickly reply to iMessages or SMS messages

By Jeff Benjamin on Nov 27, 2012

ImmediateSend is a jailbreak tweak that allows you to send immediate replies to an ongoing text or iMessage conversation. The tweak assumes that you already know the context of the ongoing conversation, so it avoids opening the full body of the chat window to save time.

Instead of the full chat body window, you are instead prompted to send responses to messages via a quick entry text window. This window contains options to reply as an SMS, iMessage, or to open the body of the chat for a full overview of the conversation at hand. Take a look inside for a video walkthrough of ImmediateSend… Read More
