So far, RedSn0w has been the only publicly released tool that can jailbreak iOS 4.2.1. The Dev Team warned users about the dangers of updating their iOS firmware to 4.2.1 before the RedSn0w beta was released. Around that time, the iPhone hacker, P0sixNinja, said that the GreenPois0n jailbreak would be ready for 4.2.1 around the same time as RedSn0w.
The GreenPois0n jailbreak has still not come out for 4.2.1, a LimeRa1n update is nowhere to be found, and all we have had is a somewhat unstable RedSn0w beta. Luckily, PosixNinja has recently said that the GreenPois0n (most likely tethered) jailbreak will actually be ready very soon. And Geohot could always come out of the woodwork and surprise us like he did with LimeRa1n.
After some drama about a leaked SHAtter exploit in mid-December, the jailbreak developer community has seemed to be a little more divided. Comex, a prominent personality in the jailbreak community, was supposed to be working on an untethered jailbreak tool for 4.2.1. However, it seems he might be saving his hack for iOS 4.3…

Looking at the drama going on between MuscleNerd and P0sixNinja on Twitter, I feel like I am watching a full season of the Young and the Restless. Quick heads up for those of you who didn’t follow the whole conversation.
A few months ago, hacker pod2g found a bootrom exploit in iOS 4.0.1 which was quickly named SHAtter. Chronic Dev Team later started using SHAtter for their GreenPois0n jailbreak for iOS 4.1. Then GeoHot came in the game with a new exploit that he was going to use no matter what in his LimeRa1n jailbreak. At this time, Chronic Dev didn’t have a choice but to put SHAtter on the side for later, and use GeoHot’s exploit.
Everything was going fine until rumors started going around that SHAtter had been leaked… Read More

Talking about drama… LimeRa1n was released minutes ago and the first reviews are not very good. Worst part is Geohot decided to screw the whole jailbreak community by revealing his exploit whereas the Chronic Dev had been working on their own SHAtter exploit for weeks now.
MuscleNerd just confirmed on Twitter that SHAtter will not be used this time for GreenPois0n. Instead of “giving away” 2 exploits to Apple, both iPhone Dev Teams have decided to hold on on the release of a SHAtter-based jailbreak and instead, they will use Geohot’s exploit. This is good, but this could also mess up the release of GreenPois0n… Read More

Yesterday we broke the news about the potential come back of Geohot and LimeRa1n, a new jailbreak-it-all tool that will supposedly be released next Monday, a day after GreenPois0n scheduled release date. At first I was very skeptical about it and to be honest with you, I still am.
However it’s been confirmed by all the big wigs that LimeRa1n is indeed for real and that it will most likely drop on Monday. Here is what we know so far… Read More

We just shared the news that the GreenPois0n jailbreak will only work for the iPhone 4, iPad, and iPod Touch 4G. However a random tipster just pointed me to this tweet from MuscleNerd saying that even though GreenPois0n won’t work for the iPhone 3GS, Comex is working on developing a new jailbreak for this device.
That’s indeed some good news for those of you who have an iPhone 3GS. At this point it is still unclear whether this new jailbreak by Comex will work with the iPhone 3G as well. There is absolutely no ETA for this jailbreak. I guess time will tell… Read More

That didn’t take long. A few days after demoing there iPod Touch 4G jailbreak, the Dev Team has now given us proof of a jailbreak for the new Apple TV that came out a couple days ago. It had been confirmed that the Apple TV could be jailbroken, but to be honest with you, I didn’t expect it to come so quickly.
This Apple TV jailbreak takes advantage of the same SHAtter exploit used on the iPod 4G by restoring it to a custom IPSW using PwnageTool. Brilliant… Read More

That’s an interesting tweet that pod2g, the hacker would found out the SHAtter exploit, sent out a couple hours ago in reply to someone asking when we should expect to see GreenPois0n released. According to him, the long awaited GreenPois0n jailbreak for iOS 4.1 will be released in days.
A few days ago the Dev Team demoed a perfectly working PwnageTool jailbreak that took advantage of the SHAtter exploit and successfully jailbroke an iPod 4G. There is every reason to believe that the Chronic Dev Team is near completion here… Read More

After showing off the SHAtter exploit jailbreaking an iPod 4G yesterday, the Dev Team updated their blog with some information related to the new Apple TV, which will reportedly ship with iOS 4.1. According to the Dev Team, SHAtter has been used to decrypt the new Apple TV keys, a a step necessary to a developing successful jailbreak method.
This is what the Dev Team has to say about it… Read More

Folks, we just got one step closer to an official release of the iOS 4.1 jailbreak promised by the Chronic Dev Team thanks to the SHAtter exploit discovered by pod2g.
In a video posted on their blog today, the Dev Team showed off an iPod Touch 4G jailbroken with PwnageTool. The Dev Team was able to use the SHAtter exploit to install a custom firmware on the iPod Touch 4G, and was successful in getting the basics covered, such as Cydia, customized preferences, root access, etc… Read More
