By Jim Gresham on Jan 22, 2013

If you use your iPhone for snapping pictures of documents, receipts, or forms, consider a PDF scanning app, which sends them to the cloud for easy storage. Personally, I do not have a use for this type of application, but it is a good option for you archivers among us. We take a look at the benefits and drawbacks of PocketScan.itRead More

Create, add, and share beautiful filters for your photos with Digiback

By Mike Schnier on Jan 18, 2013

There is an embarrassment of photography and filter apps on iTunes. If you’re not keeping track, Hipstamatic allows users to play with swappable filters disguised as virtual camera equipment, Instagram shares retro-filtered photos to a community, while Snapseed gives mobile users fine control of photo editing on the go. That barely scratches the surface of iPhoneography. In a flooded marketplace, what else can an iOS photography app allow users to do?

Digiback is a recently released photography app that allows users to not only share pictures they’ve taken, but to also share their custom filters with other users. Not only can users create impressive photography effects for their own use, you can also share these effects with others, and then benefit from effects created by Digiback’s community… Read More

Finish for iPhone, a new task manager for procrastinators

By Cody Lee on Jan 17, 2013

When it comes to getting stuff done — either around the house, or running errands — I’m one of the biggest procrastinators I know. I don’t mean to be. I’ve tried Clear, Wunderlist and other to-do list apps. And they’re all filled with long-overdue tasks.

So you can imagine my intrigue when I heard about the new Finish app, which bills itself as a timeframe-focused todo list that will help you “overcome the clutches of procrastination.” And since everyone seems to be talking about it, I had to try it out… Read More

By Jim Gresham on Jan 13, 2013

As you all know, CES came to a close Friday afternoon at the Las Vegas Convention Center, but only after an exciting week of new product announcements and unveilings. Sebastien and I made the Vegas trek to see the action first hand and we scoured the floor looking for the hot new iOS compatible products that will be hitting it big in 2013. Step inside for a run down of what we really liked and what could be making a splash over the next 12 months… Read More

Quick review: Keycard unlocks your Mac when you’re nearby, but…

By Christian Zibreg on Jan 7, 2013

Keycard from Appuous is a nifty new app which keeps your Mac secure by locking your OS X user account automatically when you’re not around. It does this by using your Bluetooth connection to check for your iPhone or iPad’s presence, thereby detecting when you’ve stepped away from your computer or returned to it. Of course, unless you remember to take the paired device with you, Keycard won’t be up for the task.

On the surface, the idea seems pretty useful as the app turns your iOS device into a personal ‘keycard’ of sorts. However, it isn’t without pitfalls and the flashy promo video doesn’t mention the fine print. I installed the program and after spending a few minutes with it immediately noticed a couple issues you should be aware of… Read More

The Rokstand: a quality stand with attitude [giveaway and review]

By Jim Gresham on Dec 18, 2012

iPhone stands are a dime a dozen. Like iPhone cases, there are millions of iPhone stands, small and large, powered and passive, plastic and metal, cheap and expensive. However, when pulling the Rokform Rokstand out of the package, I knew this stand was unlike any other stand I had ever seen or felt, for that matter. Quite simply, it is a machine, and a very elegant one at that. It owns your desktop. Just looking at it, I feel it glaring back at me. To get the full scoop, Rokform sent over a stand for review and offered to give one away to a reader in our contest below… Read More

The Hercules: a slim backpack with a pocket for everything [review and giveaway]

By Jim Gresham on Dec 12, 2012

I am a big fan of backpacks, all shapes, sizes, and purposes. Like everyone’s father told them growing up, there is a right tool for everything. Backpacks are no different. About two months ago, we took a close look at the B7103 Lance Daypack by ECBC. It was a larger, bulky bag that I would hardly call a “daypack,” as you read in the review. However, ECBC has taken a step back and produced a new bag that is truly top-shelf.

The new K7102 Hercules is a slimmer, more agile pack that, most importantly, boasts dedicated iPad and iPhone pockets and TSA FastPass computer pocket for jet setters. We are pretty excited about the changes ECBC made with such a quick turn around and more excited to offer one as a giveaway to a lucky reader! Check below the fold for all the details… Read More

Review: the MobileMount universal kickstand

By Oliver Haslam on Dec 5, 2012

Holding iPhones and iPads just where you want them is something of a dark art. There are more than enough docks, stands and foldable cases out there that claim to do the job and while most do just that, we’ve always hankered after something a little different.

When we saw the MobileMount on Kickstarter quite a while ago, we had a sneaky suspicion that we had found it. At first glance it was a car holder for a phone. Looking a little harder though suggested it could be much more than that. We were intrigued.

Since then, the Kickstarter project has come to fruition, and you can now pick up your very own MobileMount for just under $40. But should you? Let’s find out… Read More

Glif+ iPhone 5 tripod mount review

By Jeff Benjamin on Dec 1, 2012

Yesterday, I finally received my Glif tripod mount for the iPhone 5. For anyone who’s ever tried to take respectable photos or videos using the iPhone, then you know how indispensable a good tripod mount can be.

For someone like myself who’s constantly shooting video, a tripod mount is an absolute necessity if I ever desire to switch from a DSLR and shoot video with my iOS device. Perhaps you noticed a few videos in the past where I’ve incorporated video from my iPhone 5? Needless to say, it wasn’t a very pretty sight.

Although other tripod mounting solutions exist, the Glif from Studio Neat was among the first to solve the problem. It’s also one of the easiest to use. Take a look inside as I examine it on video… Read More

Goal Zero’s solar charger kit is perfect for zombie apocalypse

By Jim Gresham on Nov 30, 2012

A city-slicker that fancies himself an outdoorsman, I had been on a quest to find an iOS device solar charger for a couple months. After stumbling into an REI, the GOAL ZERO product line piqued my interest. When hiking, camping, hunting, traveling, or when the world ends, finding a power source may be difficult. If we are all Denzel Washingtons, rocking out to our iPods while we hunt for the Book of Eli, then a consistent source of USB power is as important as our favorite post-apocalyptic weapon… Read More

Seagate’s GoFlex Satellite touts 500GB of mobile wireless storage [review and giveaway]

By Jim Gresham on Nov 27, 2012

Moving toward a more connected world, we need our digital stuff more frequently and certainly when we are on the go. Whether you are a jet setter that hops around the world or a family man that needs to share the family pictures with dear old mom, size and portability matter greatly. Combine that digital need with the post-PC era, where the jet setter sized down to an iPad for space, convenience, and weight, and dear old mom just cannot figure out how to use a computer. Shake that up and you get a USB-less conundrum and, oh yeah, optical drives are out now too – check out Christian’s article to approve it.

That leaves us with a need to move large quantities of data with us, including documents, movies, photos, music, and other digital necessaries in a small device that connects wirelessly. After reviewing a competing Wi-Fi enabled external hard drive, you, the readers, called out for a larger, yet similarly mobile storage option. Today, I am happy to review the Seagate GoFlex Satellite Mobile Wireless Storage 500GB external hard drive. And, because I aim to please, I teamed up with Seagate to give one away… Read More

Screenshot Frame Maker makes iOS devices screen grabs easy and pretty

By Jim Gresham on Nov 22, 2012

As a blogger, I often use screenshots to show my readers what I am reviewing, seeing, or experiencing. When words cannot accurately portray a picture, or when I don’t want to write 1,000 words to describe something, the image is the best way. Taking a screen grab and tossing it into an article is all well and good, but adding the hardware frame around the image adds a nice touch, even a little flare, to the otherwise simple image.

Neoos specializes in mobile information technology with the goal to create simple applications to simplify complex tasks. As a caveat, Neoos is the company behind Doodle.com, a 10 million user per month service to simplify meeting schedules. Their new offering, Screenshot – Frame Maker, is a universal iOS app that simplifies the process implanting a grab into an iDevice hardware frame… Read More

Review: iZON Wi-Fi video monitor and its companion iOS app

By Jim Gresham on Nov 21, 2012

Like the Lidless Eye of Sauron, iZON stares unblinkingly into your home, taking note of all within. Scary, right? Well, not exactly, as there are many uses for a Wi-Fi enabled video monitor in the home, office, or abroad. The iZON, pronounced “eyes-on,” provides a single video feed across a wireless network that streams through the iZON server system, giving the user access to the feed anywhere in the world with your iOS device. If there is a need for you to be two places at once, the iZON can be your eyes and ears whether watching your newborn, crazy pet, or the front door… Read More

Clever Lotto tracks your lucky numbers

By Jim Gresham on Nov 21, 2012

Personally, I am no gambler and have never played the US Mega Millions or Powerball drawings, but there are plenty of people out there tossing in a few dollars just to strike it big. If you are looking for a quick, easy way to track those lucky numbers, look no further than Clever Lotto, which keeps track of everything automatically. There is no longer a need to look up the winning numbers or stay up late with your fingers crossed. Clever Lotto will send a push notification to your iPhone every time there is a drawing… Read More

Netatmo’s Urban Weather Station is for the weather guru

By Jim Gresham on Nov 20, 2012

I love the weather. No real reason in particular, but fascination started as a young child when I would rush home from school to track Hurricanes on the Weather Channel, despite living nowhere near the coast. When I first read about the first iOS specific Netatmo Urban Weather Station a month back, I was fascinated with the ability to monitor the temperature, both in and outside my house. A weather nerd at heart, I think this is an awesome piece of hardware. To the weather novice, it is still a great addition for your connected home. Below, we take a look at the personal weather station that just received CES Innovations 2013 Design and Engineering Award honoree in three categories… Read More

Blast your way through space with ARC Squadron

By Jim Gresham on Nov 9, 2012

Since first reading about Psyonix’s ARC Squadron many months back, I constantly tracked its preparation for launch. The new flight shooter released last Thursday will dominate your favorite iDevice utilizing the Unreal Engine to provide an immersive user experience. Typically, I try to review an app or product without intentional comparisons to other similar products and solely base the merit of the subject on its own qualities. However, it is impossible to not mention Star Fox when talking about ARC Squadron. The new flight combat app is one of the most immersive games I have tested and am happy to report it has earned a top spot on my Springboard… Read More

Incipio’s NGP case hugs the iPad mini

By Jim Gresham on Nov 8, 2012

Incipio, as one of the largest world-wide accessory retailers, continues its line with fresh offerings for the iPad mini. Concurrently with the launch of the mini, Incipio hit the ground running with a few of their staple cases specifically tailored for Apple’s newest iPad addition.

Today, I take a look at the Next Generation Polymer (NGP) impact protective shell. One of my biggest fears is scratching that beautiful black anodized shell and the NGP may be the ticket… Read More
