Facebook-enabled Angry Birds Friends launches free on App Store

By Christian Zibreg on May 2, 2013

As promised, Finnish mobile games maker Rovio today launched the mobile edition of Angry Birds Friends. The Facebook edition launched on Facebook a year ago.

Given that the Facebook edition of Angry Birds Friends sees 60+ million monthly installs and has over 1.2 million daily users, the iOS and Android editions of Angry Birds Friends should prove pretty popular.

If you’re a fan of social gaming experiences, Angry Birds Friends will let you invite your Facebook friends to play, brag about your achievements by spamming your Facebook friends’ Newsfeed, spend cash on virtual gifts and coins, earn bronze, silver and gold trophies and more. I’ve included the launch trailer, screenies and more info after the break… Read More

Adobe shows off Lightroom-esque iPad app with RAW support, cloud syncing

By Christian Zibreg on May 2, 2013

Photoshop maker Adobe has a few more or less useful apps on the App Store, most of them tied to its Creative Cloud offering and the Creative Suite family of desktop products for pros.

Although the company caters to photography buffs with iPhone and iPad versions of Photoshop Express, Photoshop Touch, Ideas and other apps, they’re pared down versions conceived as companion apps to their desktop counterparts.

But pro photographers have reasons to rejoice as Adobe’s group product manager for Lightroom Tom Hogarty today on Photoshop guru Scott Kelby’s show The Grid showed off a yet unnamed prototype iPad app that will bring pro-level photo editing and image manipulation capabilities to the owners of the Apple tablet.

Among the features being promised: RAW image support, seamless sync that leverages Adobe’s cloud technologies and advanced Lightroom parameters, such as exposure, clarity, shadows, highlights and white balance… Read More

Instacast for iOS makes a jump on the Mac, now available in Public Beta

By Christian Zibreg on May 1, 2013

We love Instacast as much as the next avid Apple fan. It’s the ultimate podcasting app for the ultimate podcasters: Instacast lets you both manage and stream podcasts on your iPhone and iPad, and do so in style. As a cloud-based streaming solution, it can be best described as Netflix for podcasts.

Since its March 2011 debut, Instacast has seen numerous updates that brought additional features, with an iPad version arriving in November 2011. It certainly leaves Apple’s stock iOS Podcast app in the dust and beats every other podcasting app out there. That said, small wonder developer Vemedio has responded to popular demand and brought Instacast over to the Mac… Read More

Keep track of movies you want to watch with TodoMovies

By Jim Gresham on Apr 30, 2013

The summer blockbuster movie season is upon us. Well, maybe in a couple more weeks, but I’m going to give Oblivion credit for starting things off this summer. Here is the problem, I didn’t even know when Oblivion released. Sure, I could use the iTunes Movie Trailers app to watch the trailer, and even see the release date. But, what I cannot do, is set a reminder.

Thanks to the guys at TapHive, the newly updated and beautifully designed TodoMovies app solves problems caused by my memory deficient brain. TodoMovies helps discover new, upcoming, and past movies, while providing an elegant way to create a watch list and set release reminders.

After using TodoMovies for a while, I am thoroughly impressed. Not many dev teams are able to adequately combine beauty and useful function. Thankfully, TapHive knows how to produce useful content in a nice package… Read More

Infuse, a versatile iOS media player by FireCore [review]

By Christian Zibreg on Apr 30, 2013

Over the past few days I’ve been testing Infuse, an iOS media player by FireCore, the team that brought you the aTV Flash Black for your jailbroken Apple TV.

Given their expertise in bringing support for streaming dozens of file formats to Apple’s set-top box, it goes without saying I was very much looking forward to testing Infuse for iPhone and iPad.

The App Store is home to some nice media players, Plex being my personal favorite, but none fully taking the pain out of properly rendering iOS-unfriendly video file types on iPhone, iPod touch and iPad devices.

In my personal opinion, Infuse addresses the media conundrum in one fell swoop while incorporating possibly the best subtitles support on iDevices to date and taking full advantage of Retina screens and Apple’s newest and most powerful mobile chips… Read More

Today, developers confirmed on Twitter that Angry Birds Friends will be hitting iOS and Android devices this coming Thursday, May 2, a year following its launch on Facebook in May 2012. LEGO Batman: DC Super Heroes arrives to iOS

By Christian Zibreg on Apr 26, 2013

LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes landed on the Mac last year and now an iOS version is here for your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch. Produced by TT Games under license from the Lego Group and published by Warner Bros. Entertainment, LEGO Batman: DC Super Heroes (I hate capitalized brand names so I’ll just write ‘Lego’ henceforth) has Batman and Robin characters joining forces with other Dark Comics heroes like Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern and others.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to stop the notorious villains Lex Luthor and The Joker from destroying Gotham City. The game scored nice reviews due to its 3D platforming mechanics and light puzzle solving. I’ve include the launch trailer and more in way of detail after the fold… Read More

Suit up, Iron Man 3 lands on iOS

By Christian Zibreg on Apr 25, 2013

Iron Man 3, the movie, is premiering today in select few market outside the United States. Even though the flick won’t hit silver screens in the US until May 3, French games developer Gameloft today released the official game of the third movie on iPhone, iPad and Android devices. As previously mentioned, Iron Man 3 is a free-to-play download, increasingly the norm these days.

Hopefully, it won’t constantly ask for cash as Gameloft’s recently released Dungeon Hunter 4 does. You can download the Iron Man 3 universal binary for the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad devices from the App Store. A build for Android devices is available from Google’s Play Store.

I’ve included a few screenshots and the launch trailer right after the break… Read More

By Christian Zibreg on Apr 25, 2013

Having landed on the Canada and Sweden App Store earlier this month, a highly-anticipated sequel to the popular Draw Something game is now available for download on the US App Store.

The original game pitted two players against each other in a word guessing challenge where each player gets assigned three random words and would draw a picture to convey the guessword.

FocusTwist: boost your iPhone photography with refocusable photos

By Christian Zibreg on Apr 24, 2013

There is no such thing as too many photography apps. Being an avid iPhone photography fan, I’ve found that every single photography app I downloaded from the App Store – and boy did I download ton of these – serves a slightly different purpose, letting me go the extra mile adding something unique to my photos.

Enter FocusTwist, a new iPhone application from Arqball which gives you ability to capture your snaps now and focus later. The software achieves refocusable photography by taking several images rapidly, each at a different focus setting.

The clever software then combines those snaps into a single image that can be posted online for your friends to interactively refocus later… Read More

Google releases Fiber TV iPad app

By Christian Zibreg on Apr 23, 2013

Google’s Fiber, a broadband network infrastructure using fiber-optic communication, has gone live in Kansas City which became the first U.S. community where the Internet giant deployed this promising technology.

Just a quick recap: the most obvious benefit of Google Fiber is the hundred times faster data rates, in both downlink and uplink, compared to the traditional broadband services.

Following last month’s release of the Fiber TV app for Android devices, the search monster today issued a build for Apple’s iPad tablet. Should you happen to live in select areas of Kansas City, go download the  Fiber TV iPad app and start browsing, buying and watching television shows and movies that are airing live, right on your iPad… Read More

Fruit Ninja developer releases new iPhone game, Fish Out of Water

By Christian Zibreg on Apr 22, 2013

Halfbrick Studios, as any avid gamer could tell you, is the brains behind the popular mobile franchises like Fruit Ninja and Jetpack Joyride. Not content with resting on its laurels, the Queensland, Australia-headquartered developer has released its brand new iOS game, Fish Out of Water, which wants to become your new favorite time-killer. The premise in Fish Out of Water couldn’t be simpler.

Billed as “an adventure across the sun, sand and surf,” the game, as the name suggests, plays a bit like Tiny Wings in that you’re controlling a fish which wants to get airborne and soar above the ocean for as long as possible… Read More

Delicious Library iOS app is coming soon

By Christian Zibreg on Apr 22, 2013

I’ve been a long time fan of Delicious Monster’s excellent cataloging software, Delicious Library. The handy Mac application allows me to catalogue my physical media and gadgets while the handy barcode scanning feature makes adding new content a breeze. Its wooden bookshelf design also may have inspired Apple’s iBooks app.

But in today’s increasingly mobile world, Delicious Library has lost some of its allure because we now carry iPhones in our pockets and developers never saw fit to create an iOS version of Delicious Library. That’s about to change as Delicious Monster has now confirmed plans to release a companion iOS app focused on scanning barcodes, letting you easily add content to your Delicious library wherever you go… Read More

Yahoo’s new Weather iOS app looks terrific

By Christian Zibreg on Apr 18, 2013

I’m a huge sucker for awesome weather apps, so much that I’m afraid to even think about how much money I’ve put into these kinds of apps for my iThings.

Yahoo, as you know, supplies Apple with weather data for its stock iOS Weather app (in addition to Stocks and Siri data as well) and it was reported earlier this morning that the company will be launching a dedicated weather forecast software on the App Store.

You could imagine a weather buff like myself would be hanging on the edge of my seat in anticipation of Yahoo! Weather. Now that it’s just hit the App Store, I can honestly say that this is the best-designed iOS app from Yahoo yet.

The elegant typography combined with the big, beautiful full-screen images (crowd-sourced via Flickr), the crisp weather pictograms and just the right amount of information make this my new favorite weather forecast app. Jump past the fold for a bunch of screenshots, you know you want to.. Twitter #music app launches on iPhone, get downloading

By Christian Zibreg on Apr 18, 2013

The popular micro-blogging turned media platform, Twitter, announced Wednesday that its new Music app is now available for Apple’s iPhone and iPod touch, free of charge. Twitter’s music service on the web, which has been available in limited beta to a few celebrities, will open for everyone later today. Billed as “a new way to discover music and emerging artists”, the native iOS app, which is conveniently named Twitter #music, basically wants to become your default social music discovery tool.

Currently, the software pulls songs from iTunes, Spotify and Rdio, but more sources are likely to be added in the future. Anyone can listen to iTunes previews in the app, but Rdio and Spotify subscribers can log in using their credentials to enjoy full tracks that are available in those respective catalogs… Read More

Great new iOS email client Triage arrives

By Christian Zibreg on Apr 16, 2013

The market for iOS email clients has exploded in recent months, with new arrivals like Dropbox-owned Mailbox, collaboration software Sendgine and of course Google-owned Sparrow all striving to rethink, with more or less success, what email should be about.

Needless to say, I was immediately hooked up on Triage, a new kind of iOS email client software from Southgate Labs Limited, billed as “first aid for your inbox.”

To be clear, this app is meant to complement rather than replace your primary email client by helping you “use your downtime to quickly remove the noise and stress” in order to reach Inbox Zero nirvana. And boy does it succeed in achieving that objective… Read More

Top Bot review: this multiplayer racing game challenges gravity

By Jim Gresham on Apr 13, 2013

Slowly, I am becoming more of an iOS multiplayer fan. Original hesitancy spawned from my unwillingness to invest large quantities of time hovered over my iOS device learning the ropes on a new app. As I have said time again, there is no personal interest in long complicated games for my portable Apple products.

Because of my predilection for quick pick up and play games, multiplayer was typically out of the question. However, with the advent of time shifted multiplayer, made famous but not created by Real Racing 3, I now dabble in other similarly crafted apps. For example, one of my new favorite games, that I never knew existed, is Top Bot, a multiplayer robot racing challenge for best speed… Read More

Prince of Persia: The Shadow and The Flame coming to iOS this summer

By Christian Zibreg on Apr 13, 2013

French games makers are responsible for some of the juiciest titles on Apple’s platform. Gameloft, for example, is a household name on the App Store and Ubisoft is no exception.

Headquartered in Montreuil, France, Ubisoft is behind some of the world’s top entertainment franchises, among them one of my favorites, Prince of Persia.

Created by Jordan Mechner and originally developed for and released on the Apple II in 1989, the Prince of Persia series has undergone several reboots, but they all share similar story elements, settings and characters. Their latest addition to the series, Prince of Persia: The Shadow and The Flame, is scheduled to hit iPhone, iPod touch and iPad devices this summer.

Developed by Ubisoft Pune, the studio focused on mobile and console gaming, Prince of Persia: The Shadow and The Flame is being billed as a pick up and play adaptation of the classic Prince of Persia franchise, “easy to handle but challenging to master.” You, of course, play as the Prince who must save his Princess and kingdom “on a journey that will pave the path to his origins.”

To me, that’s good enough an excuse to run, climb, swing, vault and jump from rooftop to rooftop, all over again. I’ve included more highlights, screenshots and a trailer right past the fold… Read More
