Creating the Perfect iPhone Cloud Storage Solution

With Apple’s popular Internet-connected devices like the iPhone 4, the iPad, and the recently released Apple TV, there’s an ever increasing demand for cloud storage like never before.

Many companies have recognized this need -- as evident by services like DropBox, Evernote, MobileMe, etc. -- that they’re virtually as abundant as clouds themselves. So, what's the best option for you and your iPhone?

Find My iPhone Leads Police to Another Stupid Criminal

What is it lately with stupid criminals and the iPhone? This week alone iDB reported that a man left his device at the scene of robbery and another instance of a woman texting about her crimes from her beloved phone.

Today's entry comes from my home state of Wisconsin. Madison police report that 19 year old Jamal Jackson heisted two iPhones from the local West Town Mall in the capital city. Both phones were armed with Apple's MobileMe feature of Find My iPhone which led Jackson to be tracked to a nearby PDQ convenience store where he apparently stopped his van to gas up...

iTunes on Cloud Nine

Well I didn't see this coming after the supposed hangups with iTunes regarding "minimal" access through the cloud. Gizmodo reports that a fellow by the name of Michael Robertson has discovered streaming capabilities of your iTunes library through iDisk. Public sharing between devices with iDisk has been possible for a while, but never streaming in the background, until now. To those who aren't hip to the MobileMe features, iDisk is the online based storage that is included with the $99 annual fee.

Here's your formula:

Drag your songs, one by one, or folder by folder, into your iDisk. There is no playlist support as of now, though this writer thinks that feature is an inevitable reality. Right now iDisk has a 20GB maximum, so you big spenders, (or less than ethical gatherers), will have to be selective in the songs you want shared/streamed.

Having tested this myself, I'll say that it works flawlessly over Wi-Fi. Like I previously stated, the MobileMe service is $99 a year, which includes the apps it offers. Those of you with 3G service, let me know in the comment box how it works over the network. Enjoy!

Your MobileMe Trial Is Over Soon…

This is just a friendly reminder that your MobileMe trial might be over soon. If like me you were one of the first people in the US to sign up for this service, then you should receive an email from Apple soon saying that you will automatically be charged $95 sometimes in December (December 8th, in my case).

Now I'd be curious to know what you guys think of MobileMe. I personally think it's a waste of money: $95 for storage and fake push email seems way too much when you know you can have all the same services for free somewhere else... not including the cool @me.com extension though....

You might have a different opinion and I'd love to hear it, so please share your experience in the comments.

MobileMe: yet another way to squeeze money out of you

Phil Schiller announced that Apple will be replacing .Mac with an entirely new services called "MobileMe". The new service works on iPhones, Macs, and PCs and provides an entirely new set of services for subscribers. Priced at $99 per year (with a 60-day trial available), the service offers 20GB of storage and push calendering, contacts, and email.

Using MobileMe, all contacts, calendars, and email stays in sync across all devices. When something is changed on your computer, its instantly pushed out to other computers as well as iPhones (and possibly the iPod touch). The service integrates with desktop apps such as Address Book and iCal on the Mac, as well as Outlook on the PC.

Why is everybody excited about MobileMe? I am not excited at the idea of paying an extra $100/year, just to have push email (and other push features, including calendar, photos, etc...).

Apple pisses me off always trying to get the most money out of you. When you have a BlackBerry, you don't have to pay an extra fee to enjoy push email...

What about email address? Do I have to get a new email address@me.com?? I certainly don't want to have to change my email address. Maybe a forward to my MobileMe account?

Right now, the way MobileMe is going to work is still unclear.
