iWork for iCloud apps updated with Retina support and other improvements

Hot on the heels of Microsoft's Office for iPad release, Apple has updated its iWork for iCloud apps with a number of improvements. The web versions of Pages, Numbers and Keynote have each received new features, and it looks the changes will soon be hitting the Mac and iOS apps as well.

As a group, all three apps have been updated with Retina display support, as well as the ability to share view-only documents and the option to open documents directly from iCloud Mail. Individually, each app has received updated designs for their respective editors and other enhancements...

Apple is on a roll today in terms of software updates. The company has just seeded the third OS X 10.9.2 beta to its registered Mac developers and revamped Pages, Keynote and Numbers on the web (excuse me, iCloud) with a slew of new capabilities, including - finally! - password protection for your iWork documents. Earlier in the day, Apple has managed to post a minor Podcasts app refresh and a bug fix focused update to iMovie for Mac.

And now, new versions of Pages and Numbers for iOS and OS X have arrived plus an enhanced version of Apple's presentation software Keynote with new transitions, improved presenter display options, better Microsoft PowerPoint and iCloud compatibility and more.

These software updates allow for a nice feature parity across Apple's iWork suite of apps on the web, iOS and OS X platforms...

Apple updates iWork for iCloud with iOS 7 design, new features and more

Apple posted a major update for its iWork for iCloud app suite today. The web versions of Pages, Keynote, and Numbers all received a makeover with a flattened, iOS 7-inspired design, a handful of new features, and various other improvements.

Among the new features is the ability to add passwords to iWork documents, and to share those password-protected documents with others. You can also now view a master list of iWork documents that others have shared with you, and more...

Apple adds new features to iWork for iOS and Mac

As you know, Apple earlier in the month has promised to bring back dozens of recently-removed iWork features over the course of six months. In keeping with that promise, a barrage of updates has gone live Wednesday on the App Store and Mac App Store, adding new capabilities to the iWork suite of applications on Macs, iPhones, iPads and iPods.

This is the first major refresh since last month's downgrade stealthily removed arguably less popular though essential features in favor of cross-platform document compatibility between OS X, iOS and the web.

Future OS X, iLife and iWork updates will continue to be free

One of the easily overlooked aspects of last week's iPad keynote is how Apple revolutionized software pricing. "The days of spending hundreds of dollars to get most out of your computer are gone," charismatic software chief Craig Federighi enthusiastically remarked just before revealing that OS X Mavericks will be a free upgrade to everyone.

The move has ushered in “a new era of Mac,” he said. And of course on the iOS side, the iLife and iWork suite of apps for content creation and productivity has gone from paid to free for every new iOS device owner.

The best part: future updates to iWork/iLife apps and upcoming new versions of the Mac operating system are going to continue to be completely free. What sort of dark magic is that?

New iWork suite goes live on the iOS and Mac App Store

Start your engines ladies and gentlemen, the new iWork is available for download on the Mac App Store right now. The full suite of apps, which include Pages, Numbers, and the renowned presentation app Keynote, have all been updated with tons of new features as outlined in today's iPad keynote.

Even better is the fact that all of the apps, including their iOS counterparts, have all gone free for those who have purchased Mac hardware. If you haven't purchase new hardware, chances are you already own these wonderful apps anyway, and the updates are free.

Apple's iPad keynote video is now available for streaming straight from its website. It works on mobile or desktop, and through a web browser, but you'll need the QuickTime plug-in installed in order to enjoy the presentation on beige Windows boxes. If history is an indication, the clip should hit YouTube and iTunes in a couple days tops.

Until then, block out the next 86 minutes of your life, sit back and relax, grab some popcorn and enjoy as Apple CEO Tim Cook and his sidekicks Phil Schiller (SVP of Worldwide Marketing), Craig Federighi (SVP of Software Engineering) and Eddy Cue (SVP of Internet Software and Services) deliver the latest on the Retina iPad mini, iPad Air, 13 and 15-inch MacBook Pros, the next-gen Mac Pro, OS X Mavericks and iLife/iWork...

Apple introduces updated iLife and iWork apps

As expected, Apple has announced updates to apps in its popular iLife and iWork suites today. Both iOS and Mac versions of the software have been revamped, adding new features, performance improvements and fresh new designs.

iMovie, for example, has been completely redesigned for iOS with a focus on editing and sharing. The Mac version has received some UI love too, and there's a new feature called iMovie Theater, which syncs all of your videos via iCloud...

It was two months ago that Apple opened iWork for iCloud to everyone and now it seems the company is getting ready to launch Pages, Keynote and Numbers web apps for public consumption. While visiting beta.icloud.com and logging in with your Apple ID doesn't give it away, try clicking on, say, the Pages icon and you'll be greeted with a message saying "we're updating Pages for iCloud" and a typical Apple tease, "In just a few short hours, you'll be able to create and edit documents, and enjoy great new features"...

Apple reveals full set of new icons for iLife and iWork apps

Following last week's iCloud unveiling of new iPhoto and GarageBand icons, Apple has revised its built-in apps page for the iPhone 5s to reveal several new icons that are believed to belong to upcoming app updates.

Oddly enough, the revamped page also offers up some details about the new apps. And one of the tidbits we found particularly interesting was that the new GarageBand will be a free download with in-app purchases...

Apple crediting eligible users who bought iWork, iLife apps after Sept. 1

During its big iPhone event back in September, Apple announced that anyone who purchased a new iOS device after September 1 would be able to download iPhoto, iMovie, and the iWork suite of apps—Keynote, Pages, Numbers—for free.

Making good on its promise, Apple began sending out emails with iTunes credits earlier today to those who purchased both new iOS devices and one or more of the above-mentioned iOS apps prior to the announcement on September 10...

Some iPhone 5s owners plagued with blue screen of death

In the past week or so, we have been inundated with numerous tips about an apparent issue with Apple's iWork productivity suite running on the iPhone 5s.

Folks have been emailing us about their top-end iPhone abruptly restarting each time they'd fired up Apple's Pages, Numbers or Keynote app.

Digging deeper, the problem raises its ugly head not just with iWork but some third-party apps as well. I'm just scatter-shooting here, but this could be due to the iPhone 5s's A7 chip and the transition to 64-bit computing.

Sure enough, a quick hop over to Apple's support forums revealed a thread with similar complaints where the iPhone 5s goes into a blue screen prior to respringing - hence the Blue Screen of Death moniker.

As this issue continues to persists, I though you should know about how it manifests itself and tell you about a band-aid solution. Apple of course is cleverly keeping mum on the matter and is yet to respond with a software fix for the glitch. Read on...
