WhiteD00r Brings iOS 4.2 To iPhone 2G/3G And iPod Touch 1G/2G

By Kickstar13 on Feb 18, 2011

As many of you know, with the release of iOS 4.0 Apple discontinued support for the iPhone 2G as well as the iPod Touch 1G. This left iPhone 2G and iPod Touch 1G stuck on iOS 3.1.3 for life. Furthermore, while Apple did end up upgrading the iPhone 3G (which has the same amount of RAM/processor as the iPhone 2G), 3G owners experienced a great deal of problems after updating to 4.0. The OS was incredibly slow and was barely usable.

After various reports and angry iPhone 3G users, Apple began to look into the issue and stated the issues would be resolved in iOS 4.2.1. When iOS 4.2.1 came around, performance had been improved on the iPhone 3G, but it was still quite slow. Most users decided to downgrade/remain on iOS 3.1.3.

iPhone 3G on BaseBand 06.15.00 Unlocked for Life

By Cody Lee on Jan 17, 2011

It’s official. If you have an iPhone 3G on baseband 06.15.00 and you are unlocked , you better get comfortable. MuscleNerd confirmed in a recent tweet that since the iPhone 3G will not be receiving the 4.3 firmware upgrade, your iPhone 3G will remain unlocked indefinitely.

Now let’s not all panic, this only affects iPhone 3G users on the above mentioned baseband. If you are unsure of your baseband version, you can go to settings -> general -> about -> modem firmware.  For most of us this isn’t a huge deal, but to iPhone 3G users who unlocked using the 06.15 UltraSnow unlock, and have been experiencing GPS issues, this is devastating… Read More

By Jeff Benjamin on Jan 13, 2011

If you’re rocking an unlocked phone, it would behoove you to stick to the tried and true suggestions from the Dev Team to stay away from official updates. AT&T has recently started sending out mass text messages urging customers to update to iOS 4.2.

Why would they do this? Since AT&T is already on the cusp of losing quite a few users to Verizon’s iPhone once it is released, the company is in a frenzy trying to convince customers to stick with them…

RedSn0w 0.9.7b5 Untethered Jailbreak Fixes Bluetooth Issues

By Jeff Benjamin on Jan 9, 2011

One of the biggest reasons that I chose to stick with the tethered RedSn0w 0.9.6 release for my iPhone 4 is because of the beta version’s ongoing problems with Bluetooth support.

Up to this point, all of the beta versions of RedSn0w 0.9.7 — an untethered jailbreak released by the Dev Team — have thus far been devoid of Bluetooth capabilities. When using the beta, the Bluetooth option simply stated “Not Available.”

With the Dev Team’s latest update to the RedSnow beta, the Bluetooth hurdle has finally been eliminated, and now you can enjoy an untethered jailbreak with full Bluetooth support…

The long-awaited RedSn0w untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.2.1 was released earlier today by the iPhone Dev Team. As we mentioned before, it is still a beta version, which means it is very unstable and causes a few noteworthy bugs.

We’re aware that some of you are true dare devils so we thought it’d still be a good idea to post a guide on how to untether your iPhone. This step by step tutorial will show you how to untether your iPhone 4.2.1 using RedSn0w. This only works for the iPhone 4, iPad, and iPod Touch 4G… Read More

Download Redsn0w Beta for iOS 4.2 Untethered Jailbreak

By Jeff Benjamin on Dec 26, 2010

The Dev Team has released their Redsn0w beta, dubbed Redsn0w 0.9.7b1 for iOS 4.2. We wanted to alert our readers, and at the same time provide a word of caution about the beta release.

To quote the Dev Team “This is a beta tester program. It’s not a general release!  Things can go very wrong, so please don’t even consider testing if you have pictures or other media on your device that you haven’t backed up!”

For that reason we recommend you hold off until the official release, especially if you rely on an ultrasn0w carrier unlock

By Alex Heath on Dec 24, 2010

It’s that time of year. Christmas music, staff parties, plenty of egg nog, and gifts. As fellow iPhone users, what better gift is there to give each other than what we crave: more apps.

We could all probably name at least a few apps that we would like to have, but haven’t bought yet. How nice would it be to wake up on Christmas day and have that new app you’ve been wanting?

Browse Mobile Safari Using the iPhone 4′s Gyroscope

By Jeff Benjamin on Dec 22, 2010

The iPhone 4′s gyroscope is one of the more underused features of Apple’s flagship iOS device, so it’s nice to see developers like Occipital — creator of the iPhone app 360 Panorama — put the technology to good use.

During the development of 360 Panorama, the crew uncovered the ability to control Mobile Safari using nothing more than the iPhone’s gyroscope. Want to give it a test spin? Check out the link inside…

Light Bright is One of the Easiest Ways to Adjust Your iPhone Brightness Settings

By Jeff Benjamin on Dec 13, 2010

By now, there’s virtually a million and one ways to adjust the brightness levels on your iPhone, so is there really a need for yet another way to address the issue?

While there may be other alternatives, few are as quick and simple to use as Light Bright. The developers claim it’s the easiest way to adjust the brightness on your iPhone, but is purchasing this tweak a bright idea?

Apple seems to have finally realized that brightness controls are something that end users want quick access too, as evident by their inclusion of multitask bar brightness controls in iOS 4.2 for the iPad. Sadly, there just wasn’t enough screen real estate on the iPhone to do something similar… Read More

Apple Quietly Removed the Stealthy Jailbreak Detection in iOS 4.2.1

By Alex Heath on Dec 13, 2010

According to certain device management vendors, Apple, without an explanation of any kind, has dropped its own jailbreak detection API from iOS no less than six months after releasing it. The reasons behind this decision are a mystery, as Apple has declined to comment on the decision to abandon the API in the release of iOS 4.2.1.

Apple’s API let MDM (Master Data Management) applications access core information about the version of iOS running on any given device. Basically, the jailbreak detection API allowed certain applications to ask an iOS system if it had been compromised. Surprisingly, in the newly released iOS 4.2.1, that API is nowhere to be seen…

Tutorial: How to Install the New Cydia for iOS 4.2

By Alex Heath on Dec 3, 2010

Cydia was recently updated to support Apple’s updated API’s in iOS 4.2. This particular Cydia update was quite the major overhaul, and there is no option available (yet) within Cydia to update to the newest version automatically.

Besides iOS 4.2 support, there are several long-awaited improvements in this version of Cydia.

The most noticeable improvement in this update is a huge performance boost throughout the whole application. Everything is faster. Once Cydia does the initial restructuring and downloading after you first install the update, you should notice an immediate boost in speed as you navigate the app. That means less of the dreaded loading wheel and more of actually accomplishing what you want to do… Read More

iOS 4.2 Improves iPhone and Carrier Efficiency with “Network Controlled Fast Dormancy”

By Alex Heath on Dec 2, 2010

With the recent release of iOS 4.2, Apple has joined efforts with Nokia to make smartphone carrier signaling more efficient. The Nokia Siemens Networks recently did a test to show that iOS 4.2 supports a relatively new and unadopted technology called “Network Controlled Fast Dormancy.” That may sound like a mouthful, but what it actually means isn’t that hard to understand.

Nokia already implemented this technology earlier this year, but Apple has been the first smartphone platform to support NCFD since Nokia. Based on Nokia and Apple’s combined market share, Apple’s adoption of this technology now puts NCFD-supported devices into the hands of more than half of the people buying new smartphones around the world…

AirPlay is only intended to allow streaming from the iPod and YouTube app, but this new jailbreak tweak opens up AirPlay possibilities to any playable media on an iOS device…

iOS 4.3 Rumored to Have December Release

By Alex Heath on Nov 27, 2010

We’ve barely had time to get to know the newly released iOS 4.2, and there are already rumors circulating that iOS 4.3 will be released as soon as next month. In particular, two sources have weighed in on a possible iOS 4.3 release for the not so distant future.

The rumor mill began with some words from John Gruber about Rupert Murdoch’s new, mobile-centric newspaper called “The Daily.” Apparently, Murdoch has been forming a mobile-specific news publication under the umbrella of News Corp. This new publication is rumored to deliver news through a subscription system in Apple’s App Store…

The First iPhone Dedicated Printer

By Alex Heath on Nov 24, 2010

The “Bolle BP-10″ is the world’s first iPhone dedicated photo printer. You may be asking, “Why?” Well, with the release of iOS 4.2, AirPrint, and other options like Printopia, printing has become much more of a reality on iOS devices.

All available methods for printing from an iOS device rely on either another computer to serve the actual files, or a wireless printer. The “Bolle BP-10″ lets you dock your iPhone and print directly. I could see iPhone-based printers like this one become a huge hit in the technology consumer market…

As we reported earlier today, iOS 4.2 for iPhone is now available for download. To get iOS 4.2 on your iPhone, simply make sure your have updated iTunes to the latest version available (version 10.1), then plug your iPhone in.

iTunes should tell you that a newer software is available for download and prompt you to update. If iTunes doesn’t tell you anything, click “check for updates”. If you still can’t see anything, try again later as iOS 4.2 might not be available in your area just yet, as it takes time to propagate throughout the servers… Read More
