Comex is Most Likely Saving His Next iPhone Jailbreak for iOS 4.3

So far, RedSn0w has been the only publicly released tool that can jailbreak iOS 4.2.1. The Dev Team warned users about the dangers of updating their iOS firmware to 4.2.1 before the RedSn0w beta was released. Around that time, the iPhone hacker, P0sixNinja, said that the GreenPois0n jailbreak would be ready for 4.2.1 around the same time as RedSn0w.

The GreenPois0n jailbreak has still not come out for 4.2.1, a LimeRa1n update is nowhere to be found, and all we have had is a somewhat unstable RedSn0w beta. Luckily, PosixNinja has recently said that the GreenPois0n (most likely tethered) jailbreak will actually be ready very soon. And Geohot could always come out of the woodwork and surprise us like he did with LimeRa1n.

After some drama about a leaked SHAtter exploit in mid-December, the jailbreak developer community has seemed to be a little more divided. Comex, a prominent personality in the jailbreak community, was supposed to be working on an untethered jailbreak tool for 4.2.1. However, it seems he might be saving his hack for iOS 4.3...

Jailbreak Drama: Who Leaked the SHAtter Exploit?

Looking at the drama going on between MuscleNerd and P0sixNinja on Twitter, I feel like I am watching a full season of the Young and the Restless. Quick heads up for those of you who didn't follow the whole conversation.

A few months ago, hacker pod2g found a bootrom exploit in iOS 4.0.1 which was quickly named SHAtter. Chronic Dev Team later started using SHAtter for their GreenPois0n jailbreak for iOS 4.1. Then GeoHot came in the game with a new exploit that he was going to use no matter what in his LimeRa1n jailbreak. At this time, Chronic Dev didn't have a choice but to put SHAtter on the side for later, and use GeoHot's exploit.

Everything was going fine until rumors started going around that SHAtter had been leaked...

Looks Like We’re Not Getting an Untethered Jailbreak for Christmas After All

Did MuscleNerd spoke too fast when he said last week that we'd get an untethered jailbreak for Christmas? It sure looks like it when reading this tweet Comex sent out a few minutes ago saying that he was going to miss his Christmas deadline..

At this point, I'm not sure whether Comex is working on an untethered solution or a full new jailbreak tool (jailbreakme?) One thing is sure though, we might not get anything from him this Christmas...

MuscleNerd Confirms Untethered Jailbreak to Ship Before Christmas

Earlier this month, iPhone hacker Comex mentioned on Twitter that an untethered jailbreak would be available before Christmas. It's been over a week now and we hadn't had any status update until MuscleNerd confirmed the release of an untethered jailbreak to be released before Christmas.

Minutes after tweeting the above info, MuscleNerd deleted this tweet, which is nowhere to be found now. So why did he do this?

More Info About the iOS 4.2 Jailbreak

With the release of iOS 4.2 just around the corner, everyone is wondering when and what kind of jailbreak we'll be getting. Even though LimeRa1n and GreenPois0n can't supposedly be patched without hardware modification, the risk of getting a tethered jailbreak still remains.

Comex brought up a bit of clarification about the iOS 4.2 jailbreak in a series of tweets. There is some good and some bad news...

Jailbreak for iPhone 3GS iOS 4.1 Won’t Be Released Until November

GreenPois0n is going to be released on Sunday. It will jailbreak the iPhone 4, iPad, and iPod Touch 4G. It won't however jailbreak the iPhone 3GS. So what happens to those of you who have an iPhone 3GS?

Well, yesterday we confirmed that Comex is working on a jailbreak for the iPhone 3GS but if I were you, I wouldn't hold my breath too much on that as MuscleNerd made it clear that such a jailbreak wouldn't be released until November, when iOS 4.2 is released...

Comex Working on a New Jailbreak for iPhone 3GS

We just shared the news that the GreenPois0n jailbreak will only work for the iPhone 4, iPad, and iPod Touch 4G. However a random tipster just pointed me to this tweet from MuscleNerd saying that even though GreenPois0n won't work for the iPhone 3GS, Comex is working on developing a new jailbreak for this device.

That's indeed some good news for those of you who have an iPhone 3GS. At this point it is still unclear whether this new jailbreak by Comex will work with the iPhone 3G as well. There is absolutely no ETA for this jailbreak. I guess time will tell...

No iOS 4.1 Jailbreak from Comex?

That's an interesting tweet that Comex sent out earlier today in reply to someone offering him to donate money when he releases a jailbreak for iOS 4.1. While we were set to believe that Comex would be on top of the iOS 4.1 jailbreak, it seems that we should hold our excitement.

I do believe Comex is working on a 4.1 jailbreak. And if he's not, the tone of his tweet might suggest that someone else has a potential exploit for iOS 4.1 and that indeed the jailbreak will not come from him.

About the iPhone iOS 4.1 Jailbreak

The Dev Team recently confirmed there will not be a jailbreak for iOS 4.0.2 because iOS 4.1 is right around the corner and really, it would be a waste of time, but most importantly, a waste of exploit. This being said, I bet our favorite team of hackers is currently working hard on the iOS 4.1 beta release, trying to find a hole in there.

JailbreakMe Jailbreak for All Devices

It's here folks! The long-awaited jailbreak for iOS 4 is now available and it's called JailbreakMe. Those of you who've been jailbreaking their iPhones for a while will certainly remember JailbreakMe, which is without a doubt the easiest jailbreak ever.

Simply go to JailbreakMe.com from your iPhone and follow the instructions. Really you can't go wrong with that.

Comex has done a great job by reviving JailbreakMe and bringing back the browser-based jailbreak to the iPhone.

JailbreakMe will work for every iPod Touch, iPhone and iPad starting at iOS 3.1.2. That means that if your iDevice is at 3.1.2 or newer, then you're good.

I'm in the desert right now and can't get JailbreakMe to download so I will report more about it as I get closer to civilization...

In the meanwhile, please share your experience downloading and installing JailbreakMe on your iPhone.

Spirit iOS 4 Jailbreak Release Imminent

Comex gave some good news today on Twitter when he confirmed that he was not going to wait for iOS 4.1 to release an updated version to Spirit, the jailbreak tool that will work with iOS 4 and iOS 4.0.1.

The right thing to do would be to save your SHSH blobs with Firmware Umbrella to insure you can always downgrade to a previous iOS in the future. It is the right thing to do, but it is certainly not mandatory.

With PlanetBeing and MuscleNerd being almost done on their iPhone 4 unlock, it now makes sense to release Spirit.

Excited?

How to Install Flash On The iPad

Last week, Comex, the developer behind the Spirit jailbreak, gave us a preview of Frash, which is nothing less but Flash for Android ported to the iPad. Today it seems someone released a .deb of Frash, and while Comex is not opposed to it, you've got to understand it's just an alpha version.

This tutorial will show you how to install Frash/Flash on a jailbroken iPad.

Step 1: Make sure your iPad is jailbroken. If not, jailbreak your iPad using Spirit.

Step 2: Download Frash.deb. For legal reasons, I cannot link to the file but a Google search can go a long way, if you know what I mean...

Step 3: SSH into your iPad and navigate to /var/root/Media.

Step 4: In the Media folder, create a folder called "Cydia". Open the Cydia folder you just created and create another folder called "AutoInstall".

Step 5: Upload Frash.deb to the AutoInstall folder.

Step 6: Reboot your iPad a few times.

Done! Now navigate to any site that uses Flash. You should see the red F logo where Flash is played. Tap the logo and the Flash animation will start playing

Again, this is just an alpha version that wasn't even officially released by Comex. You may want to try it just for fun if you dare. I suspect it will be posted in a repo on Cydia soon so you may want to wait for that.

I'm looking forward to hearing your thoughts.
