by Sebastien on Dec 20, 2010

Apple just released a new TV ad for the iPhone 4 featuring FaceTime, and Santa Claus himself. As usual, the ad is cute and moving, as it shows a dad wearing a Santa Claus costume and having a FaceTime conversation with his son. Awwwww.

Add a nice and sweet Christmas song to it all and you have Apple’s latest commercial, which you can watch below… Read More

How to Speed Up Cydia

by Sebastien on Oct 25, 2010

One of the big downsides of Cydia is how slow it is. It usually takes a couple minutes from the time you launch Cydia to the time you can actually download something. Well, it doesn’t have to be that way anymore… There is a simple and quick trick that will incredibly speed up Cydia by removing ads and screenshots in each package.

That means you won’t see any ads anymore, but that also mean you won’t be able to see app screenshots. That’s something I’m willing to sacrifice if it can save me a few seconds here and there. Here is what to do to speed up CydiaRead More

Apple Trademarks the Phrase “There’s an App For That”

by Alex Heath on Oct 12, 2010

Apple’s trademark filing for their famous catchphrase, “There’s an App For That” has been approved by the United States Patent and Trademark Office. The patent is filed under the Advertising, Business and Retail Services, Computer and Software service and Scientific services categories.

The trademark applies to, “Retail store services featuring computer software provided via the Internet and other computer and electronic communication networks; retail store services featuring computer software for use on handheld mobile digital electronic devices and other consumer electronics.”

This doesn’t mean that there can’t be anymore cheesy blog headlines with the catchphrase (which I have been guilty of a couple of times). It does mean that Apple can pursue a commercial infringement of the trademark with much greater ease in court…  Read More

The iPhone App Store Adds “On The Grid” Category & it Looks Like Advertising

by Guest Author on Aug 30, 2010

I must say that I have enjoyed the anticipation that has come with waiting to see which category the App Store will add under their featured apps section. This week I was sorely disappointed by the organization of location-based apps entitled “On The Grid”.

It should come as no surprise that Facebook tops the list after adding their take on the service via Places. Foursquare and Gowalla are next on the list that only sports a dozen entries… Read More

Will Apple’s iBooks Get iAds?

by Guest Author on Aug 25, 2010

The Wall Street Journal has an article about the possibility of advertisements hitting the pages of iBooks. This annoying idea is purely speculation but nevertheless worth a thought considering Apple’s newest creation, iAds.

Books as an advertising platform would have much more influence than movies or television since readers typically reread a novel over the course of many years. iBooks would be around as long as the buyer decides to keep them on their devices, and that could be a long time considering the limited amount of space they take up. How to Remove Cydia Ads

by Sebastien on Apr 29, 2010

Sure ads in Cydia are the bread and butter of underground developers, but sometimes ads can just be a little too intrusive or overwhelming. Worse, it can alter the whole user experience by slowing down the performances of Cydia.

Our buddy over at FSM found a nice way to get rid of the ads in Cydia. If you want to increase Cydia’s performance, this simple hack is for you.

SSH into your iDevice and browse to /Applications/Cydia/ and create two copies of package.js computer ( one is your backup and you will edit the other one ) . Inside that file search for var depiction = package.depiction .

Edit that line so that  depiction = package.depiction will become depiction = null .

Now save the file and copy it back to /Applications/Cydia/ , overwriting the original one. That’s it. Now restart Cydia and enjoy.

Pretty simple, isn’t it? If you like this hack, make sure to thank @MurdaFSM on Twitter.

iPhone 3GS TV Ad “Copy and Paste” Is Stupid

by Sebastien on Jul 17, 2009

I was watching TV yesterday night when I saw the Copy and Paste TV ad for the new iPhone 3GS. I had seen this ad many times before but it was the first time it stroke me how laughable this ad really is.

This is the new iPhone, and it lets you do some pretty incredible things… You can copy a phone number, and paste it in a text. You can copy an article, and paste it in an email…

What made me laugh is that they are using the copy/paste feature as a selling point. Of course this is a brand new feature for the iPhone, but you have to keep in mind that copy/paste has been available on all other smartphones forever. Besides, the copy/paste feature on the iPhone has nothing of revolutionary. If anything I think it is very clunky and intrusive. Yet Apple sells it as a technology breakthrough.

Then at the end of the ad comes the catchy phrase:

Copy and paste on the iPhone 3GS, the most powerful iPhone yet.

Well of course it’s the most powerful iPhone yet; it’s the latest one and there has only been 2 before that.

I think this ad is really deceiving.

What do you think of the latest iPhone ads? If you didn’t have an iPhone yet, would they make you want to get one?
