Teardown reveals Apple’s Lightning Digital AV Adapter contains tiny computer

By Cody Lee on Mar 2, 2013

This is kind of interesting. The folks over at Panic, the Oregon-based software company behind Mac apps like Coda and Transmit, were doing some digging around in Apple’s Lightning Digital AV Adapter, and discovered it contains a tiny computer.

Now, we know Apple has a penchant for embedding authentication chips and such in its cables, as a way of controlling third party iOS accessories. But this is completely different. The Adapter has a built-in ARM SoC, 256MB of RAM and runs an OS… Read More

The Etre Fivepoint gloves add a touch of tech to touch tech

By Jim Gresham on Feb 27, 2013

Inevitably, we all need to use our iPhones in the cold and our tiny little fingers hate the cold. Thankfully, technology entered the clothing world and taking off our gloves to use the phone is a thing of the past. Etre entered the scene after successfully establishing themselves as a web design company. Turning toward fashion, they promise “each piece is lovingly crafted in the British Isles, using responsibly sourced, time-honoured British materials.“ There are many implementations of the “connected” glove and some companies get it right, others do not. Today, we take a look at the Etre Fivepoint gloves, and thankfully, these guys got it right…. Read More

iTap: Keep your iPhone power on tap

By Oliver Haslam on Feb 26, 2013

There’s nothing more boring than an iPhone wall charger. It’s a plug, and it charges things when a USB cable is attached to it. That’s about as glamorous as it gets. Until now.

Meet iTap, the latest and greatest thing in the world of charging. It quite literally keeps electricity on tap. Well, not a real tap. That would just be silly! The photo above should be able to sell the idea of the iTap much more successfully than any text we can put together, it is a tap plugged into a wall after all… Read More

Apple’s next-generation tablet isn’t expected to hit for at least another 5 or 6 months, but accessory manufacturers already seem to feel pretty confident that they know what it’s going to look like.

Based on a number of reports and alleged part leaks, case-makers have begun mass-producing cases fit for a redesigned iPad 5 that is both lighter and thinner than its predecessor, with smaller bezels… Read More

MiniSuit, an accessory manufacturer, has sent out photos tonight of a new case for the upcoming fifth-gen iPad. It says it created the case based on specifications received from, what it believes to be, a reliable source.

Looking at the cover, it certainly seems to match up with what our expectations are thus far for Apple’s next tablet. The company is reportedly redesigning the slate this year, with traits pulled from the iPad mini… Read More

By Cody Lee on Feb 9, 2013

With Apple’s iPhone line approaching 7 years old, and the iPad nearly 3 years old, industry watchers are calling for the company to come up with ‘the next big thing.’ And there’s two mythical products that seem to keep coming up in the conversation: the iTV and the iWatch.

While we’ve heard dozens of rumors concerning Apple building its own TV set, speculation regarding the iWatch has been much more subdued. Perhaps that’s why this post from Bruce Tognazzini, a former Apple employee, is getting so much attention this week… Read More

Belkin launches FastFit Bluetooth keyboard case for iPad mini

By Christian Zibreg on Feb 6, 2013

Logitech yesterday announced its Ultrathin Bluetooth keyboard for the iPad mini, but its rivals are not standing still. This morning, Belkin said its comparable offering will be available via its web site for the same eighty bucks as the Logitech keyboard case. Built with anodized aircraft grade aluminum, it’s a fit for the iPad mini’s industrial design. The FastFit Keyboard Case is also 0.3mm thinner than Logitech’s (7mm vs 7.3mm).

We’re not sure if anyone will be able to tell the difference in thinness, but that sure looks like a damn nice portable keyboard case, if I ever saw one. Jump past the fold for more info… Read More

Logitech launches iPad mini Ultrathin Keyboard

By Christian Zibreg on Feb 5, 2013

Accessory maker Logitech just announced its $79 Ultrathin Keyboard for the iPad mini. Billed as “the other half of your iPad mini”, it’s really thin and light and connects to your tablet wirelessly, over Bluetooth. Just like the Archos ultra-slim iPad keyboard, Logitech’s baby incorporates the QWERTY key layout which comes in handy for prolonged text entry. We also love its aluminum cover which protects the iPad mini’s display… Read More

The keyboard uses Bluetooth to connect the iPad, and is largely based on the keyboard found in the company’s Gen10 XS tablet. It features Smart Cover-like magnets, a built-in kickstand, and with just a 0.2-inch depth, it’s one of the thinnest iPad keyboards available… Read More

iPen 2: a pressure-sensitive stylus for your iPad and Mac

By Cody Lee on Jan 26, 2013

Despite Steve Jobs’ public disdain for styli—who can forget the infamous ‘who wants a stylus?’ line—the accessory has proven to be quite popular among Apple users. And if you’ve ever shopped around for one, you know the market is quite crowded.

But the folks at Cregle are hoping there’s room for one more: the iPen 2. That’s right, the team that brought you the original iPen for iPad are back with a much-improved stylus that works on a number of devices, including your iMac and Apple Display… Read More

TwelveSouth’s PlugBug goes on a world tour

By Christian Zibreg on Jan 23, 2013

TwelveSouth makes wonderful accessories for Apple devices and their charging add-on called PlugBug is the perfect epitome of their design approach: not only is the accessory useful, it’s damn cute, too. For the uninitiated, the PlugBug will charge your MacBook and iPhone (or iPad or iPod touch) at the same time. The charming little red thingie piggy-backs onto your MacBook’s power adapter and has a 10W USB port to connect and charge your iDevice as the MacBook adapter simultaneously juices up your notebook.

How cool is that? Today, a year and half following its debut, TwelveSouth has announced the PlugBug World, an international version with five swappable prong adapters supporting power sockets in the United Kingdom and rest of Europe, Australia, New Zealand, North America, Hong Kong, China and a bunch of other markets… Read More

CES 2013: Griffin’s new PowerDock charges five devices simultaneously

By Christian Zibreg on Jan 7, 2013

Griffin Technology is on a roll at CES 2013. Among the product announcements they made at the show is this ultimate charging station that I’d definitely make good use of, the PowerDock 5. As the name implies, the main advantage is its  design which makes possible charging of up to five iPhones, iPods or iPads at once, an indispensable feature for families that mostly use Apple’s mobile products (I know, filthy rich people).

Each of its five charging bays conveniently has a 10-watt, 2.1-amp power supply so you can store and charge, say, five power-hungry, full-size third and fourth generation iPads simultaneously. As if that weren’t enough, the badass accessory even accommodates your iPads in their cases. What more could you ask from a charging station? Read More

Toy maker Lego announced at CES 2013 a new line of iOS-compatible toys that let children and robotics hobbyists create and command robots “that do what you want”. The kit turns your Lego creations into live robots that can be programmed without a computer. Previous Mindstorms incarnation dating as far back to the original model released in 1998 all required a PC. The Mindstorms EV3 kit comes with the EV3 Intelligent Brick, a programmable unit that un‐tethers robots from the computer and sports its own ARM9 CPU with 64GB of RAM and 16MB of flash storage… Read More
