UltraSn0w

UltraSn0w unlock by the iPhone Dev Team is a software unlock for iPhone. Our guides and tutorials will show you how to unlock your iPhone with UltraSn0w.

Looks like I now have an unlocked iPhone 4 :)

These are PlanetBeing's own words, talking about the iPhone 4 unlock on Twitter. The Dev Team has been working on the iOS 4 and more specifically the iPhone 4 unlock for quite a while now and it seems we're not too far from an official release, as we talked about yesterday.

Looking at MuscleNerd's Twitter activity, one can only assume that the famous ultrasn0w iPhone unlock will be updated soon to give access to an iPhone 4 unlock to the masses. However, we need a jailbreak first, and the word going around is that Spirit for iOS 4 will be released as soon as the unlock is ready.

With Apple rumored to push an update to iOS 4, the Dev Team might want to wait a bit before releasing a jailbreak and unlock. We'll see.

iPhone 4 Unlock Ready for Release?

While GeoHot is teasing us with fake jailbreaks for iPhone 4, the Dev Team is hard at work on an i4 unlock, and they seem to get closer.

In a tweet sent out his  morning, Dev Team front man MuscleNerd confirmed that they are one step away from being done with the iPhone 4 unlock:

Full i4 bars with custom "steve" background task spitting out "One more thing" http://is.gd/doJXt  - all pieces in place:)

If I understand this correctly it might mean they just have to package UltraSn0w and put this on Cydia... If that's really what's going on, it also means the release of Spirit for iOS 4 is right around the corner as well.

Stay tuned!

Dev Team is One Step Closer to An iPhone 4 Unlock

MuscleNerd has been teasing us quite a bit lately on Twitter. One of his most recent tweets suggests that although the new baseband OS is giving them a hard time, the Dev Team is indeed one step closer to an iPhone 4 unlock, which requires a complete rewrite of the unlocking tool UltraSn0w.

Now that the Spirit jailbreak is ready and the Dev Team is being this close to finish up the work on the iPhone 4 unlock, we can only imagine (and hope?) that both the jailbreak and unlock will be released in a few weeks when Apple ships an update to iOS 4 in order to fix the antenna issue.

iOS 4 Unlock for All Basebands Available

That was quick. It was so quick that this iOS 4 unlock for all iPhone basebands even came before an official jailbreak for the latest firmware.

UPDATE: There is now a jailbreak for the iPhone 3G on iOS 4.

In a tweet sent to their followers today, the Dev Team released UltraSn0w 0.93 that will unlock basebands 04.26.08 thru 05.13.04. Yes, that means that UltraSn0w will unlock the following basebands:

04.26.08 05.11.07 05.12.01 05.13.04

This is exactly the reason why I told jailbreakers and unlockers to hold off on updating to iOS 4. If you haven't updated to the latest firmware then you will be able to install UltraSn0w via Cydia.

If on the other end you have already updated to iOS 4, then rejoice because the Dev Team will update their jailbreaking tools (namely RedSn0w and PwnageTool) so you can jailbreak iOS 4. If you have an iPhone 3G on iOS, you can jailbreak by following these instructions.

Here are the instructions to unlock your iPhone:

Make sure your iPhone is jailbroken. Go to Cydia and search for "ultrasn0w". If you can't find it, add the following repo: repo666.ultrasn0w.com Install UltraSn0w. Reboot your iPhone. Done!

Feel free to write a comment if you have any question or concern.

What Is Unlocking?

Unlocking is an extremely easy concept to explain, sort of . Unless stated otherwise, cell phones purchased from carrier retail stores are "locked" to that specific carrier. For instance, a Blackberry storm from Verizon won't work on an AT&T calling plan. The Sprint Palm Pre won't work on T-mobile. Even your iPhone from AT&T is "locked" to that infamous blue-mapped carrier.

So what do you do if you want to purchase a phone you like but use it with a different carrier, perhaps one that costs less or gets better reception in your area? For most folks I'd say " eh fa-gettaboutit ! " (in a pretty sweet Brooklyn/Italian accent might I add). But for those of you lucky enough to have apples on the back of your phones, there are ways to relieve your beloved iPhone from AT&T's struggling network.

Hardware Unlock Vs. Software Unlock

Technically, there are 2 ways to go about unlocking your iPhone. There is a hardware unlock, which is invasive (you have to open the phone), that I don't recommend that anyone tries unless they've got a pretty extensive background in some kind of electrical engineering.

The 2nd, much easier way, the software unlock, could be done on your lunch break by your 6th grader. Just like jailbreaking, this can be as easy as hooking your iPhone up to the computer and clicking 'start'. However the requirements for unlocking and the rules you must follow are very different.

Things to Consider Before Unlocking

There are guidelines to follow when thinking about unlocking your iPhone.

First off you need to make sure that the carrier you are wishing to go to supports the iPhones technology. I'll save everyone here stateside some time and just let the cat out of the bag. If you unlock, really your best option is T-Mobile, the other major wireless GSM carrier. Other, smaller CDMA carriers (any centennial wireless users out here??) have had users confirm the unlock to work, but chances are if your reading an article on unlocking, they are referring to T-Mobile (at least here in the states).

Secondly, you need to know your firmware version and modem firmware version (or baseband as its often referred to). This is easily discovered by popping into your iPhone settings and opening the 'about' window. Now if you can't seem to find it, I'm scared for you, but I'm here for you, I've provided some pictures below to help you out.

These 2 things are important to know, as they determine whether you can unlock your iPhone or not. If you are even thinking of jailbreaking or unlocking, best practice is to stay away from updating your iTunes or iPhone software, as the war between the Dev Team and Apple rages on, each new update could disable or prevent future unlocks.

I always check http://blog.iphone-dev.org/ to see the latest unlock available. As you can see right now, they have one working for firmware version 3.1.3 and baseband 05.11, but if you have updated your iPhone recently and have the 05.12 baseband, you're out of luck for the time being. An unlock is in the works but the ETA field is empty so, don't hold your breath.

Finally if you meet the above requirements and are ready to unlock, you must first jailbreak. Now as you can see from all the hyperlinks in this article, I wrote an article on jailbreaking, and I know Sebastien's got great tutorials in the blog's 'tutorials' section, so if you haven't done that, check that stuff out, meet me back here in 5.

Who Comes Up With Unlocks?

The last part of our segment today on unlocking is software, pioneered by the great Dev Team and the prodigy kid from New Jersey GeoHot. GeoHot, who recently announced hacking the PS3, actually received media attention for his iPhone unlock and was given a new Nissan 350z by the co founder of Certicell, not bad eh.

But the backbone of the jailbreak/unlock community, the Dev Team, have been the steady frontrunners ever since. Their software QuickPwn, RedSn0w, and PwnageTool have been staples in the iPhone hacking community for years.

Generally when you're using these programs to jailbreak they ask you if you'd like to unlock in one of the steps it takes you through. Here lately though, 1 task programs like UltraSnow have been relevant, also done by the Dev Team, also available in our downloads section.

Conclusion

Well that's unlocking in 10 minutes or less, the key really is what version your firmware/modem firmware you're running, and understanding there's no unlock for 3.1.3 firmware if you have 05.12 modem firmware (baseband).

The model of your iPhone matters as well, whether it is the iPhone 3G , 3GS, or original version. Model compatibility for any unlock software is generally noted in the description of the download. And if I haven't completely crushed your dreams yet, there's no way to downgrade your baseband (let us know if you get Fuzzyband to work, we hear the bootloader's to high). What am I talking about bootloaders, basebands, you guys should probably get out of here before things get really crazy.

How to Unlock iPhone 3.1.3

This guide and tutorial will show you how to unlock iPhone 3.1.3 using UltraSn0w or BlackSn0w, depending on your iPhone baseband.

The first step is to jailbreak your iPhone 3.1.3, either with RedSn0w or with PwnageTool. Note that PwnageTool is the preferred method as it helps preserve the baseband.

You can use UltraSn0w to unlock these basebands:

04.26.08 05.11.07 05.12.01 05.13.04

To find out what your baseband is, go to Settings > General > About > Modem Firmware.

How to unlock iPhone 3.1.3 with UltraSn0w Launch Cydia. Add the following source to Cydia repo666.ultrasn0w.com (note there is a “0″ in sn0w, not an “o”). UltraSn0w iPhone Unlock Updated to Fix Missing Carrier Logo

The Dev Team updated UltraSn0w from 0.91 to 0.92 to fix the missing carrier logo. Those of you who unlocked using PwnageTool + UltraSn0w noticed the disappearance of the carrier logo. While this was just an "aesthetic bug", the core functionality of UltraSn0w (the unlock) was not altered in any way.

A short update was given on the Dev Team blog earlier today:

Today we released an ultrasn0w update that fixes an issue for those running firmware 3.1.2 with the 04.26 baseband.  That specific combination resulted in a missing carrier name in the upper left-hand corner of your home screen.  Today’s ultrasn0w update from 0.91 to 0.92 fixes that problem (which was an important issue for roaming). You should see the update available if you have http://repo666.ultrasn0w.com as a Cydia source.  Enjoy!

According to AIS, the carrier logo has been fixed for the following countries: USA, Thailand, Austria, Trinidad, Germany, China, Kuwait, Serbia, Poland, France, Nigeria, Egypt, Pakistan, Ireland, UK, Turkey, Sweden, Switzerland, Malaysia, Hungary, The Netherlands, Bahamas, Jamaica, India, Israel, Belgium, Canada, Portugal, Denmark, Costa Rica, Italy, Chile and Argentina.

Unlock iPhone 3.1.2

With every new firmware comes a new unlock. Once again, it only took the Dev Team a few days to release an update to their PwnageTool and UltraSn0w to bring a safe and reliable iPhone 3.1.2 unlock.

This article is a summary of the different options you have to unlock your iPhone, iPhone 3G, or iPhone 3GS running 3.1.2.

How to Unlock iPhone 3GS 3.1

This step-by-step guide and tutorial will show you how to unlock your iPhone 3GS running OS 3.1 using UltraSn0w. This is a very simple method that requires only a few steps.

Step 1: You have to jailbreak your iPhone 3GS by following one of these tutorials.

Step 2: Once jailbroken, follow these steps:

Launch Cydia. Add the following source to Cydia repo666.ultrasn0w.com (note there is a “0″ in sn0w, not an “o”). After installing this source in Cydia, search for “ultraSn0w”. Install UltraSn0w and reboot your iPhone.

Tha'ts as simple as that!

Dev Team Gives UltraTips About Using UltraSn0w Unlock

The last version of UltraSn0w was supposed to fix a number of bugs and overall, it did a great job. However, some people are still having issues. The Dev Team posted an article with a few ultratips for those of you still having problems with your unlock.

Battery draining too fast? It's probably because you restored your iPhone from backup. You should restore your iPhone and set up as a new phone. Issues with T-Mobile? T-Mobile's 3G doesn't work on the iPhone. It's a frequency issue. Simply deactivate 3G in Settings > General > Network

I think these two are the most common issues after unlocking. For more information, I suggest you hop over the Dev Team's blog and read the full article.

Dev Team Says UltraSn0w Is Better Than PurpleSn0w

The friendly fight between the Dev Team and GeoHot keeps going as the Dev Team posted a blog post this morning highlighting how much better than PurpleSn0w UltraSn0w is.

Works on both 3G and 3GS Works on hacktivated devices Works regardless of how you jailbroke your device Doesn’t patch any mach-o binary whatsoever.  (Doesn’t require a separate patch as each new firmware comes out). Doesn’t install any additional daemon Has no race conditions, no popups about “Missing SIM”, no network issues Is almost 7000 times smaller than its nearest competition :) Is available now via Cydia.  Source repo is http://repo666.ultrasn0w.com (that last “0” in ultrasn0w is a zero!)

That was the short version... If you want to full geeky version of this, head over the Dev Team's blog. Although PurpleSn0w might not be perfect, the Dev Team used parts and pieces of GeoHot's findings and included them in the latest UltraSn0w 0.9 update (available through Cydia).

What's really better? UltraSn0w or PurpleSn0w?

Honestly, I don't know. I don't need to unlock my iPhone right now so I haven't even tried any of these. If I had to pick one though, I'd choose UltraSn0w. I trust the Dev Team is doing what's best for your iPhone now but also takes into account future updates that might render the unlock impossible. GeoHot on the other hand, seems to be a burning head.

Have you tried UltraSn0w and PurpleSn0w? If so, what do you think?
