Apple has made a small change to their Apple ID policy, now allowing those who previously setup their Apple ID with a third-party email to update it to an Apple email instead.

Previously, if you signed up for an Apple ID with a Gmail email, you could only update to some other third-party email such as one from Outlook or Yahoo. Now you can use a third-party email, or an Apple one such as @icloud.com, @me.com, or @mac.com.

Apple has updated their support document as well that outlines the steps to make this change either from your computer, or from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch.

Before you change your Apple ID email address, you need to sign out of every Apple service and device that uses your Apple ID. If you want to use your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to change your Apple ID, stay signed in to your Apple ID on just that device.

When you change your Apple ID, you can enter another third-party email address or an @icloud.com, @me.com, or @mac.com email address.

Is changing your Apple ID email address to an Apple one something you’d consider doing?

I really want to change my icloud ID, i mean icloud email address I took short name when i first signedup years back, now im using icloud mail more serious so i need to change my address

Sadly you cannot do that (yet). What I can recommend is to set up a new Apple ID and register the email address that you are interested in.

You can then keep your old Apple ID as your primary one and just use the mail services from your new Apple ID.

I can confirm that the above setup works well and without issues, use it myself.

How can I change my gmail to my Apple email on Apple ID? It’s not working!!

Not working for me either. seems like you need to sign out of every possible web page, device etc. this may be too hard to achieve.

Sorry…been a long week already…my comprehension level is super low at the moment. But this article does get my attention. I am wondering then, I guess for clarification cuz my brain is crap right now…, can I take my Apple ID that has ALLLLL my purchases attached to it, (ex: myname@yahoo.com), and now change it to myname@icloud.com? If I did that, will all my historical purchases from a million years ago stay attached to that new ID then? Thanks..sorry for being dumb. :]
